Hey guys have just begun starting up my first reef tank...YAY. I have an aqua one mini reef 120, this is a more unknow tank as I live in Australia. The dimensions of the tank are as follows 24x18x18 inches. The display tank is 30 gallons and has a sump around 15 gallons. At the time being it has been setup for around 4 months just added my first live stock, 3x false percula clown fish, 1x bubble tip anenome and 1x Duncan. The tank has 2x jebao sw-4 wavemakers, and the return pump is just an aqua one moray which does around 400 gallons and hour. Now on to my issues the pipe that goes from my display tank to the sumo is very noisy. The pipe is a durso standpipe, I have drilled a hole in top to allow air to escape, I have also added an valve to my return pump to slow down the water flow but nothing I have done has reduced the noise much. If anyone thatís has this tank or can help my problem would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

is it splashing noise or air noise from the durso breather hole?

also, if it's splashing noise does it sound like flushing?

if it's splashing and making flushing noise, then make sure the drain pipe into the sump is extended at, or beneath the sump water level. Also, a small piece of Reverse osmosis tubing slid through the drain hole down into the water draining through the durso will help with flushing (if thats what you're hearing). If it's an air sound like a skimmer makes then the RO tubing slid into the durso hole will help with that too.

Yep.. welcome to an inferior drain setup where you are simply moving too much water through it... ;)

For a 120l tank moving 360lph is plenty through the sump..
Crank the pump down until it quiets down some..
One can only make a durso so quiet..

Providing some pictures of the drain setup from start to finish may allow additional recommendations to be stated..

The Moray pumps aren't adjustable, but there is a solution.

Put a ball valve just above the outlet from your pump to slow the water flow down back to your tank.

Sorry for the late reply been very busy, the noise is just like water gushing/splashing in the pipe, I’ve added a ball valve and made the pump go very low this has made it quieter but nowhere near silent.

if you have any RO tubing try cutting an 8" piece and slide it down into the hole at the top of the durso in the overflow. When you get it down into the water going through the durso, it may help quiet the noise. It did for mine!

if the hole in the durso is too wide then be sure not to drop it in. especially if you have unions, 90's or 45's in your piping. Just hold it and mark it if it helps. Then you can wrap a rubber band around the RO tubing above the durso so it wont drop in.
