Hob skimmer pump depth

So I'm piecing together skimmer parts. Long story short, had to move to shorter stand and can't use my bubble magus curve 7. I have an old hob coralife ss but no pump. I attached the curve 7 pump around 6ish (pump intake) below water level but filling chip in about 15 sec. I'm not good at judging or knowing approximate pump depth. Any suggestions, higher, lower or is the pump just too much?

Fwiw I cringe with hob skimmer, always worried about overflow but use ato to keep leveled. Only have 20 inches top to bottom in space below so sump skimmer would need to be short and don't care to dump a ton of $ on one right now.
