so i have been using instant ocean (regular) - the purple box - for years and years... i tested fresh mix yesterday and the alk was 12.5!!!!! I keep my alk around 7.5 so this is unacceptable. i want to see what everyone else uses. i have heard red sea blue bucket is good but want other opinions before purchasing.

thanks!

Did you check salinity? (just making sure)..
Double check that result?

Regular IO can easily be in the 11+dkh range..

seems more like a REd Sea (black) ALK numbers, maybe small testing error?
I trust you mix the mix dry first to mitigate any settlement.

I use RED SEA for years now because it has been very consistent, mixes fast, mixes clear, very consistent on its numbers, pennies per gallon and my DT is not that big at 65g

Get what you pay for (maybe)? Who knows!

i've been on fritz for a few months now. seems to work well enough.

my colors never seemed as good with IO brands, so fritz was a brand with a good reputation, that also came in a bag-in-a-box type configuration. i can't stand those 5g buckets. i have too many already.

i watched a video on brs. they compared IO regular, trapic marin pro salt mix, red sea, and another one i dont know the name of. basically IO is the worst. and tropic marine was the BRS pick. it is double the price but i am going to give it a try. it tested at 7.3 alk consistently and other numbers were all consistent with it. it is the salt they use on all of their tanks so i am going to def give it a try. excited to see the results. i cannot believe IO regular tests so high with their alk. no wonder the more water changes i did i could see only negative affects on my sps. glad i figured this out sooner than later.

I'm in the same boat. Not liking instant oceans results lately. A lot of residue left over recently too. And I do mix up bag before measuring and adding to water. Lol. I've been thinking about trying tropic marin in the near future.

Red Sea Blue bucket for me. Like the low dKH. Here is a good guide (http://www.thatpetplace.com/salt-mix-guide).
