Anyone have one of these tank mates traps or a small trap that works well? Got a Two Spot Hogfish I need to catch...

I have two traps but neither would fit in your tank. We could always make a small one.

That's a great idea!

When I saw the price on those pre-made ones, all I could think was "$60 for a small? What a rip-off". Now that you posted this, my thoughts are confirmed.

We just need some reef safe magnets and it will be easy. I’ll order the stuff once we identify the magnets. The float should be something we can find locally or on Amazon. Hopefully we can end up around $15-$20 each depending on size.

I was thinking about that backer rod too. You can buy smaller quantities at the big box stores. Heck, I may even have some laying around in the workshop.

Maybe these magnets will work. A bit expensive though.

Getting the magnet right for saltwater is my biggest concern. Want to make sure it’s sealed and corrosion resistant.

Those are just epoxy coated magnets that we could buy in bulk. They are just charging a premium to glue on a plastic mounting point. We could go with something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Neodymium-Magnets-Coating-Powerful-Permanent/dp/B07FZ2VMG8/ref=sr_1_4?crid=DG8GMEN7QHC6&keywords=epoxy+coated+neodymium+magnets&qid=1580920913&sprefix=epoxy+coated+%2Caps%2C167&sr=8-4

Also keep in mind, this isn't something that would be in the tank permanently, so the magnets could be inspected easily every time it's used and replaced if necessary.

Yea, I was just looking for a large diameter rod, this thing is going to need to float up quickly. I do like the magnets on Amazon...

mkart

I can order 4 of the 6” domes for $40 shipped, $13 of that is shipping. The amazon magnets are $1.30 each. We can double stack if not strong enough. So less that $15 for the 6” trap assuming we find the float around here. Dollar store probably has something.

If you want an 8” we should order all at once since it cost the same shipping to add additional domes. $12.75 for the 8”

I have acrylic tube we can use to help attach to some and Weldon 16.

We could also just cut strips from a pool noodle to attach to the top. That way we could cut to any size needed.

The other thing to consider is how to “inject” the food to entice the target.

Entrance hole on 8”, 10” and 12” is 4”. Have to go to a 14” to get a bigger entrance hole. Just something to keep in mind if you want the 10” for larger fish.

Also I have NPT taps so we can use a 1/4” stem adapter to add food the same way they are. Pump it dow a tube with a syringe. I think there is a better way though, just haven’t work it out in my head yet.

My personal experience has been that the traps with some kind of food port are just a gimmick and a pain to actually use. Squirting food in the trap with a baster generally works best. But we could always drill a small hole in the top and attach a tube easily enough.

Good info. Thoughts on using a band saw (you've got one of those don't you ;) ) to cut a larger hole in a 10" globe?

FYI we've got the go ahead for a few for the club.

I’ll have to see if I have a fine tooth blade for my 24” bandsaw. I had some for my 18” saw but I loaned it to a buddy a few years ago. We can make it work with some ingenuity I am sure. Always have the table saw if we support the cut.

Let me know if anyone needs ANYTHING. Sounds like you guys have it undercontrol but if you need tools/advice...ect let me know.
Id love to buy a proper fish trap. I just cant justify 60$ - 100$ for the ones online.

This would probably work better than cutting down a big globe. Cheaper too! ;)

I can order them. I am doing a 6” and 8” for me, club gets a 6”,8” and 10”. I think you wanted a 6” and 8” but have to scroll the thread. Mike are you going to borrow one or want your own?

Also just a note for others reading this thread - I am happy to open up my home and shop to make these or anything else as a group. I enjoy designing and creating things for my hobbies and the fun of getting together to do it. I specifically don’t just make extras for people who don’t come to participate with the group. I get too many requests to make things for people so I have a personal rule that if you want my help making something you have to participate. Sometimes that only requires holding my beer. I have invested a lot into my shop and can make about anything I can think of. Happy to share and never expect more than you to pay for your supplies and investment of time as well.

This is correct. Thanks!

So we just need to decide what foam to use for the float. I can take a look at the big box to see what kind of foam backer rod they have this weekend. I think we'll need something that can be split down one side to attach to the rim of the 10" globe we'll be cutting down. Also, I can 3D print some holders for the outside magnet to make it easier to grip for removal from the glass.

Happened to be at Lowe's tonight so looked at the backer rod. It might work, but seemed a little small (at least what they stocked) so might need to be doubled up. Down side is it said "not for continuous wet, or marine use", so I think it's a no go anyway. I've got a couple other options I'm looking into.

I have 1/2” foam sheet we could cut and stack to make our own floats. The blue stuff you line a house with under the siding.

Also, I am pretty sure the original picture posted is using a camera wrist float. Those are as cheap as $5 each but we can come up with something cheaper.

Refrigeration line insulation tube looks promising too. Another option would be to squirt some pond foam around the ring.

With what we found so far I think we will be around $15 for the small and go up from there. Hard to guess the magnet strength needed until we experiment. I’ll order the 6” and 8” tomorrow unless we want to try the Michaels bowl. No rim so the time investment may go way up to have a working product that will last.

Here’s what I have to order today.

TanksDad 6”
Smoothdog 6” and 8”
Mkart 6” and 8”
Clevername2000 ??? Did you want one?
Club loaner program 6”,8” and 10” from amazon.
oshanickreef you still need a piece of acrylic cut for your lid? Bring it over when we do this and we can cut it and glue it. I have 3/8” and 1/2 to cut it from.

4 ea 6” = $26.92
3 ea 8” = $31.89
Shipping quoted = $21.32

6” total is - $6.73+$3.04 shipping = $9.77 + $2.30 magnet + $3.33 float = $15.40 in all

8” total is - $10.63 + $3.04 shipping = $13.67 + $2.30 magnet + $3.33 float = $19.30 in all

Only real question is if the magnet will be strong enough for the bigger ones. If not we double stack and the costs increases accordingly.

I am headed back from the bourbon train in Kentucky today and can order for this week arrival.

Thanks, but I think glass would be a little too heavy for the magnet, plus we'd have to worry more about breakage.

Kirk and I did complete one to test but the magnets were too weak. I have larger magnets but honestly haven’t tried them. I believe they will work and we will only have to design a larger container to seal the magnets in. Kirk can do that I believe. I’ll try to test what I have tonight.

I’m thinking we can have the same size magnet on the bowl regardless of glass thickness and create different sized external magnets to handle that change for user to user.
