View Full Version : Wild Tortuosa From Bali?

I want to share this amazing aquaculture Acropora from Bali. I believe it to be Acropora tortuosa, but the corallites are structured differently then other torts I have seen. I realize that identification base on structure is no definite, but I have never seen another Acropora with this same color. I received this specimen about 6 months ago. The color has never changed. It took two months before any growth was apparent. In the last four months it has grown about 3 inches. It is now growing extremely fast since I fraged it. The color is the deep blue that is common with the captive verities. Axial corallites are bright green. This is the first wild colony of blue A. tortuosa I have ever seen. Sorry, it is not for sale.
I was wondering, if any hobbyists or other vendors have seen a wild A. tortuosa? Anyone have pictures? Please let me know your thoughts on what you believe this specimen to be.
Thanks,
Phishy

From the picture it does not look like a tortuosa to me (but I have been wrong before :) The corellite structure is not smooth like a tort. Either way it is a beautiful specimen and should certainly be brought into circulation ;)

AgentSPS,
I agree on the corallites not appearing to be the same of captive torts. I am working on 10 smaller colonies that I fraged from the mother. I hope to be able to frag those in the spring and get them into circulation. Thank you for your comments.

I agree, not a tort. but awesome none the less. I got a piece that looks almost identical in stucture from Chuck (underwaterrealms). He thought it was a tort as well. Never seen a tort. with scales.

I'm happy to see that its growing finally. Phishy let me know if you get bored with that frag, it's just so blue, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands.
Beautiful! Can we start a frag waiting list now?
