Each will be small, but will grow under VHO or MH lights.
Each is free to a member of the club providing that.....
They are at the next meeting to receive a colony
I dose Calcium, Stronium, and Iodine, this leather fairs quite well under Metal halides and VHOS. They like a little flow of water but from time to time IT WILL SHRINK. Don't panic, they will release a slime, which is very normal, In a matter of days, they will inflate again. It grows quite well, and pretty fast IME. I challenge you to keep this frag going and going.
My Water Para:
Sal 1.025
Nitrate 0
Nitr 2
PH 7.9-8.2 Constant
Amm Undet
Cal 420
Alk 3
Temp constant 80-82
They promise that once they are twice the size they are now, they will donate a colony the approximate size of the original donor colony.
If you wish to be a sponsor....reply to this list. The first 3 will get a colony. The next people on the list will receive frags from the sponsors when the colony has doubled.
pls Reply if you would like to be a Sponsor of this Leather.
Sorry Paul, It was already written too well, I just had to copy it..

I would like to sponsor a frag. If you don't have enough for this meeting, please put me on the list for the "half" time show. I won't be putting this one in the seahorse tank, but in our regular reef tank. The leather I received at the last meeting is doing wonderfully, even has some little yellow tips that look like new growth.

Hey Rocky,
Thanks again for the leather frag.
It looks great and now I have a question.
Looking at the leather, I see little polyps all over. The ones that are open are evenly spaced from each other, but what about the one in between? Do eventually all the polyps open, or just a few as it is now?

01/16/2004, 07:20 PM
As they get used to your tank, they all will open.
What kind of lighting do you have?
I keep the mother off to the side in a somewhat shaded area, with medium flow next to it.

After numerous attempts to glue the little beggar down, I finally left him lay, where he attached himself to the underneath side of a rock (I have no idea how he got himself in that position) He is at the very bottom of the tank, in a somewhat darkened area, with low water flow, and seems to be lovin' it. Polyps are extended every day, and I can't see any ill effects of all the handling and gluing he has gone thru. Fortunately, the rock he has attached himself to will be fairly easy to remove and frag.

Well, my frag was looking really good. All of the sudden it has crapped out. It was attached and everything, but over the last couple days it has began to look like a piece of cardboard.

Adam, just leave it alone...Sometimes leathers do that, shrivel up and look dead, it is just excreting it self, and may loose a filmy coating on it. It is normal. Double check your parameters, and if they check out good, then it should be okay.

The original piece I got was kind of shaped like the end of your thumb, now it appears to getting dented in at the top, and has 2 distinct lobes. I see from the mother colony that the tip ends do this. Is it normal in a frag as small as ours? I'm hoping this is just proof of growth.
rbb213

It is very normal to see it take shape of different forms. I wouldnt be too alarmed when it does this.

Mine was doing great, then a day before the last meeting it shriveled up and shrunk. I wasn't too alarmed, since Rocky said they did this, but it still hasn't come out of it. It is still attached, but is only about half the size it was was when I got it, and it had grown to almost double it's size. Also, the little polyps haven't extended since then either. My params are as normal as always, with nitrate being way too high, but absolutely no nitrite or ammonia. Been feeding DT's twice a week, and dosing calcium once a week. Salinity was a little high at last check, but not out of the acceptable range. This tank has a VHO bulb, an actinic blue, and a regular aquarium bulb, with a Marineland filter (no biowheels) and 2 powerheads. Every other coral in the tank looks good. Anyone think of anything else I could do to get it to come out of it?

Try moving it to an area with a better water flow. If it is currently in a hi water flow, move it to a lower one. Generally, my experiences with leathers is that they prefer one or the other depending on which you have. Mine is in a hi water flow at the bottom of a tank with 440wVHO.

It attached itself to the bottom side of one of my base rocks. No chance of moving it. It has shriveled with a long "stem" attaching it to the rock. Will it harm it to cut it off the rock and move it to another spot in the tank, or would this be more detrimental than leaving it? I would consider where it is to be med. lighting and low water flow.

Good news! While my frag isn't back to full size, it does appear to have taken a turn for the better. Last night it was about the size it was when I got it, and the little nubbly bumps were again starting to appear. I haven't had time to change anything in the tank, so maybe it was just taking a siesta.

Here's an update on my frag.
It has been growing great. I cut a frag off from it a month ago. The little frag has grown to the same size as the original frag was when I first received it.
My new frag is ready to be donated back to the group now. I have looked through the thread again but it does not look like anyone else had asked for a frag.
If anyone else would like some of this great leather, you need to be a COMAS member and just post a reply requesting to be on the list.
I will be bringing the frag to the meeting even if nobody has posted a reply just in case someone wanted some but didn't get a chance to reply before the meeting.
I will post tank conditions once I get home from work.

While my leather has come out of it's slump, it doesn't appear to really be growing. It has come back to about the size it was when I got it, but no larger. It has attached itself to the underneath side of one of my base rocks. Moving the rock will mean rearranging the entire tank. What do you think my chances of success will be in cutting it off that rock at the base and placing it elsewhere in the tank, where it can get better light and water flow? Am I just asking for disaster? I would rather leave it somewhere it is growing, albeit slowly, than cut it off and kill it.

In an attempt to clean these threads up.....
I will make a list of who has the frags and who wants frags. AS you get frags. Please copy the list and change it as you give a frag away and move your name from "wanting" to "have". If there are mistakes in the list, such as yours died or you didnt get any...then change the list.
Also...........if you are the original donor...........we need a picture and a description of each coral for the website.
