View Full Version : Let's see your best looking clams!

Here's a crocea I got last week.

Yep, it's a little deformed. I got it anyway b/c it still looked beautiful! Looks like it suffered something dramatic during its younger days (shell not perfect, hence the deformity), but it's looking very healthy!

Here is my 4 inch Blue Maxima:) I have a 90 gal. with only Duel 175watt Ushio 10K MH's and duel 110watt VHO's. " Here are for the folks that say 250-400 watts is the only way to keep these guys":frog:

Nice!

Here's some more:

8cm Crocea
http://members.rogers.com/exquisiteaudio/reef/croceaweb3.jpg

Squamosa ~11cm, Crocea (same one as above), the one that got cut off is a 13cm Crocea. Looks amazing, but camera cannot captures its brilliance!

http://members.rogers.com/exquisiteaudio/reef/squamosacroceaweb.jpg

Now I want the ultra good looking clams. Some tear drops I saw on this forum looks too unreal! :-)

This is something I would be interested in.

This tear drop belongs to someone on this forum. Unfortunately, I forgot who, so I cannot give credit.

None of my LFS sells it including wholesalers. I rather not mail order, but I don't think I have a choice.

James Yeung

One more:

I moved several clams to the top of the tank just to take the pics. I only gave 'em a few minutes to settle, so I didn't get an excellent shot of this one.

It's a 9cm Crocea: Super neon green. Too bad my camera can't capture the magic.

James Yeung

Cam: Thanks!

I bought them from the wholesaler. I'm fortunate enough to have access to them since my parents used to own a fish store. :-)

Anyhow, some of the LFS clams I see in my area are from this wholesaler. The Big Al's in Scarborough appears to have imported their own. I'm almost certain that some from Big Al's Mississauga are from them as well. The Chinese place (right next to Big Al's) were selling 6cm croceas for $50CDN. Which is not bad at all for retail.

I'm obessed with clams and one thing I don't see in Toronto are rare looking clams! I would love to import rare clams and sell them outta my basement to support my hobby, (anyone have leads for me to work on?) maybe make a small business out of it!? So far, people in the US can buy the most unbelievable looking clams, especially in LA and at damn good prices! I don't like mail order and I wish someone in Toronto sells tear drops (do you know any stores that do?). Unfortunately, it may cost 2x more than ultra Croceas or Maximas. Ouch! I may not buy it, but I want to see it!

Alright,

Here's my entire stash (added 7 in 2 days - this picture was taken 24hrs after the last clams were added).

10 clams - clam island:

http://members.rogers.com/exquisiteaudio/reef/clamsfront2web.jpg

Changed clam island, it now looks like this: Taken a few minutes ago - only 8 are visiable in this pic. I wanted the Croceas to get more light. I kinda liked most of the clams to stay in the middle, but decided I gotta move 'em for their benefit.

James,
Your collection is absolutely incredible.
You are so right about the clams available locally. I have never had the opportunity to see a tear drop in person but I have a few pictures on my computer as screen savers. I have only seen gold maximas a few times at big al’s and I am kicking myself for not paying the $ 150.00 they were asking at the time. I presently have 3 nice croceas but they are all in the blue/purple colour range. I really want a clam that stands out from my purple coraline rock and my blue mushrooms but I also don’t want to rely on a courier to deliver a live animal.

I always stop by the Chinese place next to big Al’s in Mississauga when I am in the area. Unfortunately they have never had any clams when I have been there.

If you ever start up that business in your basement keep me posted…
By the way… I am now on a mission to find one of those pink/red/blue teardrops that you posted.
I won’t sleep until I find it…. After all it is after 2:00am already

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4db31b3127ccebe10c9b020580000001610

And one of the tank straight on. There are a lot of coral frags laying around on the reef and substrate. I frag often and donate to Boston Reefers for the MACNA auctions. Pardon the miserable house keeping ;)

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4db31b3127ccebe10c9cfa1170000001610

This shot was taken over the winter. The corals are about 1/4 larger now.

First, I cant recall you've asked me, and if you did I'm sorry if I did not answer.
Second,I'm not in the states, so it'll be kinda difficult for me to help ya get a Clam in the states if I'm not there.
I know some people who are selling those TD in the states , but they wont retail.
If you'll be one of the first in a Vietnam Clam shipment, you'll get few of those.
I think your best chance will be Barry from Clams Direct, e-mail him this pic and see what he says.
It is not a difficult Clam to get, you'll get it for sure.
It took me over a year to get the green clam on the pic that fishnerd post, now that was a difficult task. : )

I was the one who purchased the red teardrop from AP. The red teardrop didn't look that red neon color when I recieved it. But it did have a red/maroon looking color from above. It was still a great looking teardrop. It overcame the gapping ,but sadly lost the battle with mantle pinching disease.

I just purchased my digital camera recently so, I don't have another pic of the clam.

It been a while since i read the book by D. Knop, but if my memory is not too bad, I remember he give size for each species of clams. he gave the size for Maxima and Squamosa to be about the same, about 35-40 cm. It seem everybody start to copy his number so that is the number I see these days. I have seen Squamosa much bigger than this at The Seattle Aquarium.

Nice blue one, what made you decide to go with a barebottom tank?

Thanks. It is a very beautiful clam. I had a 135 reef that was barebottomed for several years. I had no problems, and then I put 2 inches of the very fine sand in it and battled algae problems for over 2 yrs. So when I converted everything over to a larger tank, I had planned to put a very small amount of sand on the bottom just to cover it. I still have not done it, I can't decide to do it or not. My tank is also mainly sps and I have a lot of water movement. And don't want it blowing around. So it may stay like it is. I have seen a barebottom thats been running for over 10 yrs and it looks great. Mine is only a year old this July.

Im just about to do a new Clam+sps tank and it's going to be bare bottom.
My best tanks were BB, with LS, it was always OK tanks or problems.

So you are saying that if it were you. Don't add any LS leave it bare? I have been leaning that way more so than adding any sand. My bottom glass is getting encrusted with coraline algae. I think pink is nicer than white. :)

Znut,
I'm in the process of making another tank, and I'm really looking forward to have it done.
It's going to be a nice toy with IKS, Deltec and Grotech equipment.
I made up my mind that I wont have ANY LS in this tank.
I remember my old tank with the BB, and it was nicer, easier to clean, and less potetial for a failure.
I know most of the reefers wont agree with me, but I'm going back to old school.
It worked for me more than fine for years, it never let me down, I dont have a clue why did I ever started with the LS.

I think you'll be very pleased with the bare bottom tank you got planned. It sounds like a nice project you got planned. And I wish you great success. What size are you planning? We all will look forward to the pics. I haven't posted many pics of my sps tank I want to give it time to grow.
As far as the LS goes, the bare bottom is very easy to clean. The bottom of my tank has very little to none to vac up. I'm going to leave it bare bottom. Like you going back to the old school. Had alot less problems with algae.
When I had the 135 it only had 2 inches of LS in it. I had major algae problems for over 2 yrs, I bought tons of snails and still could not beat it. Not to mention weekly WC and pulling and scrubing the rock.
We built a house and when I moved the tank, I didn't put any LS in the bottom of the tank. ALL the algae died, we were amazed in 2 months time the tank looked like a whole new tank. So when I set this one up, we didn't add any sand. So thats food for the thoughts. :)
