I know this pic was posted a very long time ago, but I was wondering if you can elaborate on your system a little bit. Do you pay particular attention to keeping it looking so "clean"? What I mean by that is your sand area looks very manicured and defined. I think that it gives your overall system a very nice look. Anyway... stunning aquarium!

That picture is from a Japanese tank. It is reposted here on RC quite often because it looks spectacular. Rumor has it these tanks are set up specifically to get a great picture rather than that being the results of day to day care like our tanks tend to be. I don't know what to believe. Great picture though. :p

i don't know about everybody else, but for me the impact of seeing an image fill the monitor is sooooo much stronger than seeing a small version. a completely different animal...
and speaking of animals :p , here's the smaller of the two Barnacle blennies in my tank:

Not as good as I had hoped, but not bad for 1st attempt. I need to try the white balance thing with the coffee filter. How do you get the photos so large? I could not find a setting on photo bucket or do I need to get a photo shop program?
melev
12/25/2005, 07:26 AM
If your image is already saved to your camera at 1280 x 960 or something, you don't have to do much. However, if your camera saves pictures to 600 x 450, you can't post large wallpapers without creating pixelation/distortion as the image is stretched to look larger.
Also, some hosting sites will resize your images automatically. I host my own images on my site, so I can pick the size I want it to be and it will display as intended.

I just place a piece of white PVC in the tank, and point the camera at that when I set the white balance. This works well for me. White acrylic, white cutting board material, both would work as well.

Mark, or anyone,
My camera has I slide scale (for lack of better words) from -2 to +2. Do you look at the color through the LCD screen or what? I guess that is were I am getting it wrong. I try to set it looking through the LCD screen, with the filter material in front of it.
Do you actually put the pvc in the tank or just in front?
melev
12/25/2005, 10:04 PM
It sounds like you are setting Exposure Compensation instead of White Balance, but I could be wrong. My camera has a White Balance setting that has about 6 preprogrammed ones, and room for two of my own. I put the PVC in the tank in a well-lighted spot, and then follow the directions on the screen to set it to memory.

Guys, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this thread should have wallpaper size images posted. Images that are 614 wide, for example, don't make the cut. ;)
800 x 600 , 1024 x 768 and larger.
That being said, I love your pictures! Just give us the larger version if you have one you want to share.

800x600 is small ;) We need 1024x768 or 1280x1024 and larger...

GregR, I think you missed the other thread with wallpapers, there was a GARF tank, and gee, I just had to change my WP to one of those and take down the leafy dragon of yours I had up for so long!! (sorry..)
Here is mine, I've been 'flaunting' it shamelessly because I'm thrilled to finally have one shot from one of my darn tanks that worked out.

I believe this is the default setting when you sign up in photobucket. Go to 'account options', there is a drop down box 'max picture size', bump that up to 1024k. After changing and updating my user information, I seemed to still not get it to stop re-sizing my pics until I logged out and logged back in.

Very nice Greg!
Greg - what are the image size of the photos you posted? Pixel size I guess I should be more specific. What canvas size are good for wallpaper photos?
In my post "First Pics on Forum" are those big enough? Can I post larger files on photobucket (is that the paid membership?)
Or if Melev or anyone else knows that would be great!!
Lee

You can right click on the photo and select properties-- that will tell you the image size. I made mine 1200 pixels wide but that is just a "big" picture, not a specific size if you know what I mean. Depending on your desktop resolution the picture may or may not fill your sceen. I started this thread way back when because I felt like small pictures lack impact- when you see a picutre that fills the screen it's a million times better... but of course there are trade-offs. The two that come to mind are bandwidth (download time and hd space) and the biggie- a large file is much more attractive to thieves :(

Lee, when I make "wallpaper" images, they used to be 1024 x 768. Now I make them 1280 x 960. I don't do it too often.
Photobucket is free, but the more people that view your image, the more bandwidth is consumed. You may discover too many large images will shut down your account until the new month when the numbers reset. A paid site will give you more flexibility. I've been paying $96 a year for the past few years and never worry about not having images display in any of my myriad of threads. :)
Hey Marc,
Thanks for the info. I didn't know that Photobucket would shut it down based on bandwidth used. Can you PM your site? Do you have a separate thread for your new tank or is it still tagged in your existing thread?
Thanks for all you do for this hobby!!

Hi Lee,
Photobucket is a free service, but I often see "Image Unavailable due to excess bandwidth usage" when a thread is viewed often, such as the one with the pictures from the Great Barrier Reef that had some videos included. They will be visible again on Feb 1 though.
My website is a click away, just click on the red house above. I have been using ipowerweb.com for my hosting needs for the past few years, but bluehost.com is probably even better. Two years' worth of hosting is $164, which is only $82 a year.
The new angled tank is still awaiting on my schedule to open up so I can get it completed.

Imageshack.us and Flickr.com are a couple other great sites for hosting. I think flickr has no limit on what you can put on there but don't quote me on that one.

I'm not sure why I can't post it larger.....I have it hosted at imagestation and it's 3k x 2.5k pixels. It should have been huge!
can anyone help me?

I can't remember if imagestation has size limits or not. You might want to check their tech support page or email tech support and ask what's up.
