How old is this tank? It's incredible. I bet you actually HAVE to frag to survive. I wish you were in my reef club!

Rick, that's more populated and full than any reef in the wild that I've seen and I grew up snorkeling in Miami (20 yrs ago before so much polution ~ well, before what the last 20 yrs of polution). He's got a reef on sps-roids! Hopefully this will be me in 3-5 yrs...

It is a aquarium of 1,200 liters. (170x120x60cm). The illumination: 3 HQI of 10.000ºk and 250 Four w. Philips TL/03. It has 100,000 liters of water movement.
The aquarium has been almost three years mounted.

Paso a contar los datos:

Acuario
Dimensiones exteriores : Largo x ancho x alto = 1,70 x 1,20 x 0,60 m, con cristal de 10 mm y tirante perimetral.
Volumen bruto : 1.200 litros.
El diseño del acuario no ha sido fruto de la casualidad, se ha tratado de optimizar el equipamiento y a la vez tener el máximo volumen de agua. Por ejemplo, en acuarios de gran capacidad cuando se empieza a superar los dos metros de largo, tenemos que poner numerosos HQI para iluminar toda su superficie. Prácticamente, he juntado dos acuarios de 600 litros para dar una profundidad de visión ciertamente encomiable, ya que con 120 cms. de ancho (que es casi el largo de muchos acuarios), los peces se comportan de una forma más natural al no tener que estar todo el tiempo frente a un cristal. Por otro lado, la mesa del acuario tiene una altura de 105 cms. y esto permite ver el acuario a la altura de los ojos, lo cual da una visión de campo magnÃÂ*fica. Los 60 cms. de alto es, quizás, el máximo que se le deba dar para no darse un chapuzón en cada limpieza.

Seco-Húmedo
- SUMP: Volumen bruto : 450 litros.
- Reserva de agua: 200 litros.
En este caso, he utilizado un antigüo acuario de 450 litros (tener un espacio para un poco más de agua nunca viene mal).


Skimmers
Un skimmer Turbo flotor 1.000.
Dos skimmers berlin XL modificados con Eheim 1060 y rotor de agujas.
He utilizado equipos que tenÃÂ*a de antes. A la bomba del skimmer berlin le he sustituido el rotor por un rotor de agujas de Aqua-medic y he reducido la longitud del tubo interno ya que la producción de burbujas y el caudal de agua es muy superior. Con estos tres skimmers me permiten tener un potencial redox de 380-400 mv. sin utilizar ozonizador.

Oleaje
2 bombas de subida desde el seco-húmedo de 2.200 l/h (eheim 1.060).
1 bombas Maxi-jet de 1.000 l/h con una derivación que alimenta al reactor de calcio.
1 bombas Rio de 2.500 l/h (barriendo el fondo).
1 bombas Tunze 7420 (4.000 litros) y 5 bombas Tunze 6100 (12.000 litros).
1 bomba OTTO de 1.700 l/h (barriendo el fondo).
1 bomba Rio de 2.500 litros (para alimentar el enfriador en verano).
2 bombas Sicce de 4.000 litros (barriendo el fondo).

Oleaje total: en bruto unos 80.000 l/h, unas 80 veces el volumen del tanque.
La disposición de las bombas me permiten que el agua llegue a todos los rincones, y el encendido y apagado de las bombas permiten un flujo circular (en sentido horario y antihorario) y transversal al acuario, lo que permite a los sedimentos que se acumulen en un determinado punto que me facilita el sifonado.
Al principio partÃÂ*a de un volumen bruto de unos 30.000 litros a la hora, pero el crecimiento de los sps me han ido obligando a utilizar, más y más potentes bombas. De hecho tenÃÂ*a 7 bombas tunze de 12.000 litros, pero una tormenta me estropeó dos que retiré del acuario.

Iluminación
3 HQI de 250 W y 10.000 ºK durante 10 horas diárias. Balastros electrónicos de la marca ICECAP.
2 HQI de 150 w y 20.000 ºK durante 10 horas diárias (ahora están apagadas porque no me convencen mucho....).
4 tubos fluorescentes de 36 W actÃÂ*nicos (Osram 67) durante cartorce horas diarias. Todo a unos 35 cms. de la superficie del agua.

Ajuste de la alcalinidad
pH-metro electrónico Aqua Medic, calibrado cada tres semanas con una solución tampón (pH = 4 y pH = 7).
Reactor de calcáreo de AQUA CARE para acuarios de 2.500 litros. Estoy muy contento con este reactor, ya que tiene varias virtudes como el que funciona como un lecho fluido, tiene una sonda para la entrada del CO2 por lo que trabaja siempre con el mismo pH sin necesidad de sonda y por último, que tiene una cámara de aireación donde sube el pH. También tiene sus desventajas como que es muy gastoso, tanto por el sustrato, como por el CO2. Es un reactor muy potente.

Yo utilizo aragonita de RED SEA que es la REEF BASE, aunque ahora la mezclo con ARM.
El reactor trabaja por debajo del pH indicado (que es 7.0-7.3) y con un flujo mayor, unos 25-28 litros, por lo que el pH del acuario permanece un poco bajo, sobre 7.9-8.0. El reactor funciona entre 7-8 horas diárias.
El uso de un reactor es la panacea para los sps, lo agradecen de inmediato con su crecimiento.
La caida de calcio es increiblemente rápida, sobre unas 10 ppm de Ca por hora de luz, por ello hago todos los dÃÂ*as un test de Ca.


Mantenimiento de la temperatura
Enfriador de la casa Cubigel de 1.000 litros conectado a un controlador de temperatura de la casa Aqua Medic (durante el verano). En invierno, termocalentadores de la casa Jagger.

Control de la evaporación
Controlador de nivel de la casa System 2.000 (para reponer el agua evaporada) conectada a una bomba Eheim de 1.200 l/h.

CaracterÃÂ*sticas fÃÂ*sico-quÃÂ*micas del agua
Temperatura : 24°C a 27°C
Densidad: 1026
pH : variable... entre 7.9 y 8.0
Dureza de carbonatos = 18 ( no sé el motivo, pero está anormalmente alto, aunque a los animales no parece perjudicarles).
Ca2+ = 420-470 ppm. (Salifert Profi-Test Calcium).
NO3- = 5 mg/l (Salifert). (por decir algo, ya que por lo general suelo añadir nitrato potásico de vez en cuando debido a que cae a cero)
PO43- = 0 mg/l (Salifert).
Potencial Redox: 380-400. (Sin ozonizador).
Silicatos: 0 ppm.
Mantenimiento fÃÂ*sico-quÃÂ*mico
- Añado ioduro potásico (KI) al 5 % (1 ml/semana).
- Añado cloruro de estroncio al 10% (40 ml/semana).
- Añado elementos traza (Biosonal).
- De vez en cuando añado hierro y nitrato potásico (para las macroalgas).
- Alimento los peces casi todos los dÃÂ*as con alimento en escamas. De vez en cuando les doy artemia congelada.
- Limpieza de los cristales dos veces a la semana.
- Limpieza de los skimmers todos los dÃÂ*as.
- Tengo una evaporación diária de unos 10 litros.
- Cada mes cambio 25 litros por agua de mar . Aprovecho para sifonar sedimentos del fondo, que debido al flujo de agua que hay se suelen acumular en un punto concreto. A veces cambio un poco más, pero suele depender de los sedimentos que tenga el acuario.

Población
Decoración Piedras vivas (200 kg). Provenientes de Kenia.
La decoración está elevada unos cuatro centÃÂ*metros del cristal para favorecer la limpieza. Otro de los defectos que comúnmente presentan los acuarios de arrecife es que debido a la cantidad de roca (viva y no viva) que se utiliza, y todavÃÂ*a más si se utiliza arena de mala calidad, es la producción de sulfhÃÂ*drico debido a la aparición de zonas bajas en oxÃÂ*geno debajo de la decoración por la acumulación de sedimentos. En este caso la regla es clara, lo mejor es utilizar un soporte que eleve el arrecife y deje pasar una corriente de agua por debajo, en mi caso utilizo una estructura de PVC y placas de fondo unidas con abrazaderas de
PVC y muevo unos 12.000 l/h por debajo. La roca también está colocada de forma que apoyen lo menos posible las unas contra las otras.
Mi sistema es un berlÃÂ*n puro, sin arena. Cuando lo instalé no habÃÂ*a ninguna arena de calidad en España y tras anteriores fracasos, preferÃÂ* dejar el fondo limpio.

Peces
Uffff, la tira, pero me gustan mucho las bandadas de damiselas. En total habrá unos 80 peces.

Corales e invertebrados
Uffff, ésto es más difÃÂ*cil todavÃÂ*a... no sé donde empieza uno y acaba otro. Lo que sÃÂ* que es cierto que el 85% son esquejes de mis propios animales.


Problemas que he tenido:
1.- Al año de funcionamiento: la instalación eléctrica era insuficiente (la sección de los cables). He tenido que volver a hacer la instalación, ya que se me calentaban mucho los cables y las lámparas no daban su temperatura de color.
2.- Inducción eléctrica en el acuario debido a una bomba Ocean Runner defectuosa. A partir de la solución de estos problemas el gestión del calcio se vuelto sumamente fácil teniendo casi problemas para que no me supere las 500 ppm (test de Salifert).
3.- En marzo de este año, una tormenta ocurrida un sábado por la tarde, me dejo al acuario sin luz durante quince fatÃÂ*dicas horas. Como siempre ocurre, a mÃÂ* me pilló de viaje. Aunque el tiempo no fue mucho, si tuvo una incidencia notable, más de 30 peces muertos y una garrafa de 5 litros (de volumen) llena de acroporas muertas. Gracias a Dios, mi acuario está ya restablecido y el propio crecimiento ha tapado las heridas. A partir de esta marzo incorporé unas mejoras:
Instalé una web cam las 24 horas para poderlo ver cuando gustase (el acuario lo tengo en la oficina y no en casa). Se puede ver en mi web.
Instalé un avisador telefónico. En caso de falta de luz, me llama al móvil. Este es uno de los principales fracasos en los acuarios de arrecife. El problema no es que se vaya la luz, es que no se sepa que se ha ido la luz, ya que si no sabemos que existe un problema, no podemos atajarlo.
Instalé un diferencial autorearmable. Si salta por una tormenta o un pico de luz, se rearma solo, por lo que no tengo necesidad de desplazarme. Es un aparato muy interesante.

Hi everybody!

I´m Francisco´s friend, and I´ll try to make a little translation of his post....

I think you understand the measures... 1.200l are about 310gal.

He has try to optimize the equipment and get the maximum water volume. For example, in large aquarium with a length of more than 2m (80 inches) we need several MH/HQI. His tank is like two 150 gal tanks together: length 67 inches and wide 47 inches. In this way he has get a depth of vision of 47 inches... the length of a lot of tanks, and the fishes behave is more similar to the reefs, because they don´t have to swim in front of the front glass all the time.

On the other hand, the height of the table (41 inches) let you to see the tank at the eyes height as it gives a magnificent vision of field (I don´t know if the last phrase is correctly translated :rolleyes: ).

The height of 23,6 inches, is may be the maximum to avoid to have a bath every time you clean the tank.

99 gal sump and 44gal RO water tank.

Skimmers; he has used skimmers he had before start this tank.

- Aqua Medic Turboflotor 1.000 multi.
- 2x Berlin (Red Sea) in which Franciso has made some improvements: He has replaced the original pumps and has put Eheim 1060; he has reduce le heigth of the skimmers because of the water volume and bubbles production is very superior. He has also replaced the original wheel, now the skimmers are running with the Aqua Medic needle wheel.

With this three skimmers, he gets a REDOX of 380-400 mv without ozone.

Powerheads:

-2x Eheim 1060 (484 gal/h) up te water from the sump.
-Maxijet (220 gal/h) with a derivation which feeds the calcium reactor.
- 2x 550gal/h Rio sweeping the bottom
- Tunze 7420 (880 gal/h)
- 6x Tunze 6100 (2640 gal/h)
- OTTO (374 ga/h) sweeping the bottom
- 550gal/h Rio to feed the cooler
- 2x 880 gal/h Sicce sweeping the bottom

Total: about 17,600 gal/h, 80 times the tank volume per hour.

The pumps disposition let Francisco to arrive to all the corners of the aquarium, and the on and off of the pumps create a circular flow cross-sectional to the aquarium, that make all the sediments acumulate in a point to facilitate the sediments collection.

At first, 6600 gal/h was the total movement of the water, but with the SPS grow, he had to improve the water circulation.

Lighting:

-3x 250w HQI 10.000ºk 10 hours per day.

-2x 150w HQI 20.000ºk 10 hours per day (at the moment they are off... they don´t like very much to Francisco).

- 4x 36w T8 actinics (Osram 67) 14 hours per day.

All the lighting about 14 inches over the water level.


KH maintenance: Aqua Medic pH-meter calibrated every three weeks.

Calcium reactor Aquacare, for aquarium up to 550 gal. he is very hapy with this reactor, it had several advantages: it runs like a fluidized bed filter, it had a prove for the CO2 enter, so it always works with the same pH without needing pH prove; and finally it has a ventilation camera where pH up.
But also some disadvantages... it waste a lot of substrate and CO2.

It is a very powerful reactor.

For the reactor substrate he uses Reef Base (by Red Sea) and now also some ARM.

The reactor works at a pH lower than the indicated (which is 7.0-7.3) , and with a greater flow, 25-28l (5.5-6.1 gal). The reactor runs 7-8 hours each day.

All the SPS loves the reactor, and they grow very fast.

The Ca fall is also very fast... about 10ppm each light hour; that´s why Francisco test the Ca every day.

Temperature:

Cubigel cooler, 1.000l (220 gal) conected to an Aqua Medic temperature controler in Summer; and Jagger heaters in Winter.

Evaporation control: System 2.000 level controller conected to a Eheim (260 gal/h).

I think you understan the parameters.... Dureza de carbonatos is KH, and is too high (18), but it don´t seems to damage corals.

He add KI (5%) 1ml per week.
SrCl2 (10%) 40ml each week.
Trace elements (Biosanal).
Sometimes Fe and K2NO3 for the macroalgae.
He feeds his fishes every day, withh flake food, and sometimes with froozen brine shrimp.
He cleans the glass two times per week.
He cleans the skimmers evey day.
Evaporation of 2.2 gal ech day.
Water change: 5.5gal/month with sea water. Then he collect all the sediments that are acumulatd in the same point. Sometimes he change more water, it depends of the number of sediments acumulated.

Fishes: there must be, about 80

Corals: a lot, the 85% are frags from themselves.


Livre rock, about 200kg from Kenia.
The decoration is elevated four centimetres of the crystal to favor the cleaning.
Another defects that commonly present reef aquariums is the production of acid sulphidric because of low zones in oxygen underneath the decoration by sediments accumulation, like a consequence of rock (lives and not live) that are used, (and still more if sand of bad quality is used). In this case the best thing is to use a support that elevates the reef and lets underneath pass a water flow, I prefer to use a PVC structure and united backplanes with PVC, so it can move 12.000 l/h

The system is Berlin, without substrate, when Francisco start it, there was any good sand in Spain.

Troubles Francisco has had:

1.- After a year, the wiring wasn´t enough, and he had to do it again, because the bulb didn´t get the right ºk.

2.-Electricity in the aquarium, because of a defective Ocean Runner. After solving these troubles, the Ca levels areeasy to be kept, having problems to avoid beating 500ppm (Saliferte test).

3.- On March, a storm put off the power of the aquarium for 15 hours, Francisco was traveling. Although it wasn´t a lot of time, more than 30 fishes died and he filled a 5l bottle (about 1,3gal) with died acros. Now the aquarium is recovered thanks to the growth.

Since then, Francisco made some improvements:
He installed a web cam which let him see the aquarium every time he wants (the aquarium isn´t at home, it is in his office ); you can see it in his web.

He also installed a phone warned, that calls him if the aquarium tunr off, and aslo installed a device which automatically turn on.

El acuario lleva casi 4 años.

Ahora es más difÃÂ*cil, tanto, que he tenido que suprimir varias bombas, porque chocaban las corrientes con los corales. De todas formas tienen 4, dos a dos, que hacen un sentido horario y luego antihorario.

Pues eso, que por fin me decidÃÂ* a remodelar. Aunque por desgracia, mi impaciencia me ha pasado cuenta, y la anterior vez que metÃÂ* la mano....... sin comentarios.

A mi pecera le sobraban cosas, asÃÂ* que decidÃÂ*, tras hacer una chapuza, imitar la técnica de Dani (piscinita de niños :D):

Coloqué una TUNZE 6100 debajo, una RIO de 2500 litros y una saccem de unos 3000 litros, en total, 17000 litros debajo de la estructura barriendo.

También cambié el enganche de mis tunze con los nuevos imanes y les puse el deflector de codo de PVC para dirigir la corriente y poner mis bombas al 100% de potencia.

Como se puede ver, el acuario está nuevecito, esperando terminar de ser ajustado y listo para empezar a crecer :) .

Espero que tarde otros cinco años en remodelar porque...... vaya tunda que nos dimos......

Este es el resultado, no es lo que tenÃÂ*a previsto que me saliera, pero estoy muy contento, he conseguido con apenas roca, aparentar un buen volumen y en directo no se ve tan mal como en las fotos, de todas formas, es pronto para que resplandezca, en un par de meses..... ya que la idea es que los corales sean los que le den la forma al acuario y no la decoración de roca en sÃÂ* ;)

Actualización.


Me queda que cambiar los actuales spiders, por mis nuevos lumenarc (que por cierto, todavÃÂ*a no los he sacado ni de su caja.....).

Comentar que ahora mismo estoy solo con ARM en el reactor y que tengo fosfatos, aunque no estoy utilizando ninguna resina antifosfatos. En las piedras está floreciendo la coralina (se quedó totalmente pelada.... no le llegaba luz ninguna). El consumo de Ca va subiendo poco a poco, lo cual es muy buen sÃÂ*ntoma, y mis corales empiezan a tener "colorcillo" :D


No me salen bien las fotos superiores, que son las que más me gustan, porque tengo muchos reflejos de los proyectores.....

i try to explain but some of my translation may not make sense.
