jasonfrey

Just received prices today, but they will not be formally available for 3-4 more weeks.

You can get the 4 foot for $1025.00
With Ballast, 250w 10k Lamp and Actinic t5

All of the above "Kit" pricing includes the needed Bluewave 3 or Bluewave 7 ballasts, German Made Ushio or BLV brand 10k lamps and the proper German Actinic high output T5 Fluorescents.

thanks

What about the two foot fixture with the 250 W Hqi and the 24" T5 bulbs? Also, will I be able to get the fixture with a Blue Wave IV or just a bare ice cap ballast?

Oh, and what about a 2 foot tek leg stand for the light?

jasonfrey
03/24/2004, 11:39 AM
hi,

2 foot complete is 645. They come with the Sunlight hqi ballast, fully wired and ready to go. They are working on some upgrade prices for Icecap. Or you could get the 2 foot fixture only for 369 and add your own ballasts and bulbs.

thanks

Jason,

To overdrive the bulbs a little brighter, I would buy the Maristar fixture only, plus ballasts and bulbs seperately? How much assembly is this for an electrical newbie..?

I am assuming that my shopping list for this suped up lighting assembly would be:

Maristar Fixture
PFO 250W Dual HQI Ballast
IceCap 430 Ballast (for overdriven T5's)
Bulbs
(2) IceCap power cords

Is this all correct?

Does the fixture include (I am assuming) the fans and fan system?

Thanks so much for the time and attention,

Todd

jasonfrey
03/28/2004, 02:45 PM
Hi Todd,

I'll have to check on the fan, not sure if the complete system even has one.

If you go PFO dual hqi, you'll need to get PFO quick connect cords adn then wire them to a female Sunlight cord. Not too bad, just a few wiring splices. Would be easier just to use Sunlights hqi ballast though, they do have a dual available in hqi.

Not sure how involved switching to icecap ballast will be, probably not too bad. Sunlights ballast that drives T5's is very good though. I personally do not think you need to spend the extra for Icecap since it's only 2 bulbs. if it was a 4 bulb system maybe, but don't think you would really reap many benefits with just 2 lamps.

thanks

Ok, as promised. We have these online now at:
http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PA&Product_Code=SL-MS-2150&Category_Code=Maristar

The only information is what we pulled from Sunlights website, so some details may change, but that should be final product descriptions. You are welcome to order now if you want, but sounds like it will be 3-4 weeks before they start shipping.

Todd,

Agree with you. PA ( Corey) Have been great but SLS is not great at the customer service part. Makes you wonder if there product is really worth it. I am way past my 12 month on my system and need something fast. I was even willing to pay extra for shipping and packaging. IF I don’t hear back from them I will order the 4' PROTOSTAR 250 WATT 10,000K HQI & FLUORESCENT 110W VHO. I would like to order the PFO but they are having shipping problems as well. They are backed up for about 4 weeks from what I hear. So it leaves me in a bad spot. Only Time will tell.

Where are you considering buying the Protostar from?

Todd March
04/12/2004, 10:37 PM
The Protostar has the worst reflectors I can imagine—it actually has NO real reflectors, just a sheet of polished metal. This fixture is gunna waste a lot of light...!

Sunlight Supply is the king of reflectors (look at the high praise for their ROIII and Tek T5 reflectors)... I would wait and get a Maristar fixture—you and your tank will be much better off... The ballasts will be much better than what Hamilton can offer I imagine as well...

BryanJ
04/12/2004, 10:57 PM
I wanted to look at the protostar because I never heard of it. Now that I know hamilton makes it I'm not interested. I have been going back and forth between just T5's, Maristar, Ocean Light and ROII's

Todd March
04/12/2004, 11:15 PM
Yeah, BryanJ, lighting is a real nightmare when it comes to making a selection, isn't it? When you buy a skimmer, you really can't go wrong with a Euroreef, but lighting is sooo much more complex...

I have looked at the Ocean Lights fixture too... The price just can't be beat. And you can even get it with AB's new 20K bulb... Have you seen this thread yet..?

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=2531805#post2531805

Plus, AB/Aqua Medic will be coming out with Ocean Lights soon that include the halides and T5 as well...! Pricing should be great as well.

The Maristar looks like a fantastic unit, well built and nicely made—SLS really makes a great quality product... I can't believe how their ROIII reflector has taken over the hobby...! But I think the prices for these units are really high...

Have you looked at the Won Brothers fixtures yet? They include HQI DE and T5 and are very well priced. You can find them at Premium Aquatics (who try to only stock quality equipment);

http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=PA&Category_Code=Wonhoods

These prices on the Won units even include bulbs!

BryanJ

Right now this is the best deal I have found.
http://oceanencounter.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=OE&Product_Code=AOL2W&Category_Code=AMO
The bulb is included and it is your choice of 10k or 20k

Thanks for the link to that thread. My wife might have a problem with that hum. Now I want to hear it so I don't have to hear her later:lol:

bigzman
04/13/2004, 05:48 AM
I know they are not the greatest but what options are there? The PFO will ship at a minimal 4 weeks. The Hamilton can be shipped in five days. I don’t know enough about WON brothers to say anything about them. Anyone know of any other units? Besides the price is just right. Below $900.00. I just don’t want to wait another four weeks. That would be two months for me. If they would at least give me a time frame that is solid I would wait.

The Won hood has a 1yr manuf. warranty covered by Won Brothers here in the US. The 14k lamp that is in the unit is a Chinese bulb (ie XM and Coralvue) labeled "Weipro".

I spoke with Sunlight Supply Tuesday and they are going to be ready to ship by the end of this week or very beginning of next on their hoods.

By any chance - will this have separate ballast for each T-5 such that we could have even more control - do Mh's detract from T-5 life due to heat or are they somewhat protected?

Hi,

The hood will have one ballast that will operate both T-5 lamps. You probably will not be able to find any hood on the market that you can control the actinics separately with the exception of the larger PFO Professional series hoods. The T5's appear to be shieled fairly well in this setup, so I wouldn't foresee heat being any issue to the longevity of the actinics.

The ballasts will be a "dual" unit, or you can run separate electronic ballasts.

SLS is waiting to receive the proper packaging material to ship the hoods. They are able to ship to us via our house pallet order, but unfortunatley the hoods would not come in enough packaging for us to ship it back out via UPS/FedEx yet. SLS is anticipating being able to ship via common carrier within the next week or so.

Howdy,
What are your thoughts on running the 36" 250 watt maristar on a 48" long tank?

I also have to say that the horrible things Im hearing about SLS's customer service and output don't really entice me into ordering.

Jeremy B.
04/23/2004, 08:07 PM
Hi,

I don't think you would see a BUNCH of difference on a 36" hood vs a 48". You will probably notice the very ends of the tank will be a little dimmer, but if you do not plan on stacking rock all the way to the end of the tank and placing coral on it, it really won't make much of a difference. I like the look of tanks that have suspended hoods that are a few inches short on each side. It doesn't make the setup look so "top heavy".

The hoods come standard with a magnetic remote ballast. The electronic is an upgrade if you prefer to go that route.

Are the BLV brighter then the ushio? Are the BLV on the blue side.

Bigzman: I did a quick search on BLV bulbs, and everyone seems to be saying nice things about them. They state the 20K BLV's are very white, so I would assume the 10K would be more white than blue, but I'm only guessing (Jeremy, am I close or waaay off?).

Jeremy: How much is the upgrade for the electronic ballasts? In your opinion (be honest) is it worth it? If I want to change my order to electric, is it too late? Sorry for so many questions, but when you're spending $1500, you want to get the most out of it! :D

moonpod
04/29/2004, 08:44 AM
BLV vs Ushio 250w DE--whiter than the IMO fairly yellow
Ushio. "brightness" wise, it's a wash visually. The BLV 10k is NOT a blue bulb at all. Very comparable to the Geisemann Megachrome though. For aesthetics what looks really good is if you blend a BLV 10 and 20k or if you use some blue+ bulbs w/the BLV 10k. By itself, it is very white. No blue at all IMO.

JMO guys, don't rob yourself of the extra light by using electronic ballasts w/DE bulbs. The "effeciency" factor of a mag HQI is very, very close to that of an electronic--yes you use more juice, but you get the corresponding more light.

bigzman
04/29/2004, 09:01 AM
Moonpod,

Thanks for the Answer. What about start up on a electronic ballast? Other then effeciency is there any value? What about long term electrocal cost? What about compatabliy with other brand of Bulbs.

Regards,
Bigzman

TJcop
04/29/2004, 10:32 AM
Moonpod: Do you think the T5 Actinics are going to provide enough "blue" to supplement the BLV's?

Jeremy: One last question, I'm guessing that the actinics and the MH's can be turned on/off separate from each other. Am I correct? Thanks all!

moonpod
04/29/2004, 10:44 AM
IMO--this is a purely aesthetic question, better off w/blue+ than actinic especially w/a 10k bulb b/c there's already a big 420nm spike in the BLV 10k, whereas the blue+ spikes at 450nm.

I don't believe in "electronic" startup effeciency. I'm not saying that eballasts don't work, etc...I'm just saying that you get more light w/the mags, the bulbs are made to the mag spec.

bigzman
04/29/2004, 10:49 AM

Yes the T5 and the MH can be turned off or on separately.

Look at sanjay joshi's work in advanced aquarists. Most of the 10kish bulbs have very similar patterns with different size peaks, but peaks in the same places.

Looks at the Ushio, BLV (HIT), AB, and the Geisemann MC (though this may not have been a final production bulb)
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/feb2004/feature1.htm

Many manufacturers publish their spectrums. I can't remember the "X" manufacturers page but they have the spectral graphs published.

I dunno if that's the case or not, but I'm pretty sure that in traveller's testing of the 150w DEs that he's still doing that it was pretty much the same across the field, ie the shields were all about the same in terms of PAR impact.
