View Full Version : Donor: Micro Brittle Stars

In my 20 hex, I have probably 500 micro brittle stars. I understand Paul talked about these at one of the meetings recently, and he has received the first ones I've managed to remove. I have no real idea how to optimize the survival of these, as they are hitchhikers. That tank is coming up on four years old, and I just noticed them about a year ago. The best method of transplant appears to be by removing caluerpa with them on it. That red stringy "tang heaven" stuff grows in that tank, and they flock to it. It will be a while before I can remove any more, but you might want to start a list if anyone is interested. If anyone has any other suggestions on getting them out safely, please let me know.

I would love to have some as well. I need some life for my tank. It could use some good cleaners for my rocks. As of now I don't have any fish so they would have time to grow and protect themselves. Out of interest, would they be able to live and grow if there were fish in my tank? It is not an aggressive tank.

Mandarins and wrasses will eat them.

Clowns may not, Damsels may.

Paul.

In an attempt to clean these threads up.....
I will make a list of who has the frags and who wants frags. AS you get frags. Please copy the list and change it as you give a frag away and move your name from "wanting" to "have". If there are mistakes in the list, such as yours died or you didnt get any...then change the list.

Also...........if you are the original donor...........we need a picture and a description of each coral for the website.

I was lucky enough to aquire a few of these from a reefer in bartlesville she scooped up a little sand with them and they made the trip nicely. She told me that if you cut back on feeding your tank the number of brittle stars will decrease and if you feed regularly they will increase . (if the food source is there she told me they reproduce very well)they are very delicate and you have to be careful not to crush them.

I'm not sure if I will have any ready by the meeting. The only way I have found to transport is to harvest macro they are in. There isn't much growing at the moment. I'll try add a little chetomorphia (sp?) and see if they will run to it.

any chance of these being available Jason?

The macro I was using to export these, has quit growing. If someone can come up with a good method to get them out safely, I can donate some. Been a while since I've checked the board.

Hi Jason.

I can give you some Chaetomorpha. That should make a good rigid nest. How about I bring you some about 2 weeks before sept meeting, then we can see how many we could harvest...

PM me.

That would be fine. I work for the meeting but someone could take them, and hand them out.

I found two of these stars the other day. I had never seen them before and then one day there were 2 climbing the glass. Is there a reason that they would all of a sudden climb the glass? I remember Don, (Not Don Davis) saying that one time he had them all over his glass. I forget why he thought that happened.

Stars are pretty much gone. I had a bristle worm explosion in that tank. I don't know if they were eaten or just don't have enough food. You can still see one or two on occasion, but nothing like the hundreds I had.

I will be at the next meeting. Am just starting in all this - have a 29G tank with a 10G sump beneath it. Rock has cycled and I am starting to add some cleaner crew types, etc.

Please feel free to bring anything to the next meeting that you might like to donate to my cause. ;)

I just noticed lots of these little guys in my frag tank. The substrate is crushed coral/shells. Seems they like it in there.

If I can catch and transport some I will try and get them onto a donor list. I will only pass them on to people running a sump right now as I really want to see what makes them grow. If the people with sumps see an increase in them as well that will be great.

I would love to see what makes them thrive. Maybe a small tank with no predators would be a good idea to see if I can get a large population going. Im sure Lynn wouldnt mind another tank in the house.

I HAD a huge number of these in the sand and on the rock of my 29G tank. I am HOPING enough of them survive on the rock to get the population up and running again.

One thing. I ordered the detritivore kit from inlandaquatics.com. Whatever the case, it might have helped...
