I have a live acro that has a creature living in it, but im not sure what it is. It makes a cocoon out of some sort of fiber and is webbed around the coral bottom near the base. I hear clicking noises so im thinking a pistol shrimp? I have used tweezers to remove the cocoon, but it is rebuilt in about a week. Will this thing eventually destroy my acro?

I know know of fish that make a cocoon (some do it at night to sleep, or when they're ill).

How large is the web?
Get a glimpse of the critter?
Have you tried forcibly evicting the critter?

Well when i first got the coral i noticed the web inside and removed it. The web suffocates the flesh of the coral causing tissue loss but only around the web. I know its not a fish. The web is around 2.5 inches long and around 1/4" diameter. It snakes along the base of the acro where another coral crab lives. The fiber of the web is nothing i can pin down. Its organic but more like hair than mucous or some sort of macro. I know i can tweezer the whole thing out again, but im more interested in knowing what it is.

Thanks!

Any chance you can post a pic? Do you think the web is a part of the creature (spaghetti worm comes to mind, but i don't think they live in corals, just rock and substrate). Does the web look more like mold/fuzz or more like worm parts?

Ill get a pic up when i get home....but the web is dark almost black and densely fibrous, yet clearly hollow.
