There are "fireworms"/aka/"bristleworms" that are detrivores and are a good thing to have in the tank :D

I was under the impression that they were all in the family polychaete and fireworms were the ones that have gills between each row of bristles and that they eat coral and bristle worms were just detrivores.

That's one of the problems we all run into when using "common names" :D One common name could make up several species, and sometimes whole genra.
To All Those Who May Still Be Interested,
As this thread was started on May 17, 2004, I expect that there are many that would like to see some pictures of my aquarium as it has now been in continuous operation for almost 12 years.
Accordingly, I intend to take and post pictures on or before the anniversary date.
I'll also try to respond to any of your questions.

amazing!
I have recently been working on a project and thought that it may be useful to share it with all of you and see if I can solicit some interesting and perhaps novel ideas.
The project that I am in the process of planning involves a large solarium/conservatory extension to our kitchen, that will serve to extend this area directly out into our garden.
In undertaking this project, I would like to add some interesting and possibly creative features; which brings me to the issue involving reef aquariums.
Specifically, in-as-much-as the solarium/conservatory will be located almost directly above the existing aquarium, I could rather easily locate a water/aquarium feature in this area that would physically be connected to my existing reef (this would simply require a pump and some 1 1/2 pipe).
The question is..... what interesting feature can I add?
One thought that occurred to me was to, perhaps, add a zero-edge aquarium.
In terms of dimensions, our existing kitchen is approximately 16' wide by 22' long and the solarium extension would add another 18' to this area. The walls of the solarium will be 9' and the peak would be approximately 12'.
There is, of course, the benefit of natural sunlight during the day and I should perhaps mention that conceptually the room must visually integrate into an elaborate garden and the fact that one side of the solarium/conservatory glass walls will border directly on a large pond containing fresh water plants (including water lilies) and Koi. Another benefit is that this water/aquarium feature would utilize the facilities that support the existing 800 gallon reef and perhaps add an additional measure of stability by increasing the overall volume of water.
I should perhaps add that, as I envisage it, there would be defined areas in the solarium/conservatory that would be populated with tropical flowering plants and foliage.
Any thoughts, ideas and suggestions would be much appreciated.
:)

Pics before Suggestions! hehe I know it's blackmail, but hey we've been waiting so long. hehe :)
Perhaps a mangrove swamp/nursery???
I would be cautious of heat related issues. I have long considered adding a tank to my sunroom that could get full sunlight and the benefit of being tied into my basement system. But even a small tank in that room would have the potential to overheat my whole system in the summer months.

Hrck, you have a PM.
Regarding the addition of the new zero-edge tank, the one concern that comes up is will the current sump be able to hold the additional water volume draining down in the event of a pump or power failure?
Zero-edge tanks are beautiful, but can be a bit noisy. Draining into a sump mere feet beneath it; you're wanting to drain at least 12' down, correct? Just something else to plan for.
This tank could be lagoon style, with Mangroves growing on either end and some pretty clams and non-jumping fish, as well as some horizontally-growing corals.
EDIT: I see we all like the idea of mangroves.

The clam tank was my first idea also.
You could do a tidal pool that would tie in better with the landscape features. You could have it fill and drain on an 8 or 12 hour cycle.

A few thoughts:
I see Melev has sent you a pm. my guess is that may another invite for TOTM, which skipper referenced some time ago as trying to get you to agree. From following you for quite some time, I see you are a very private person and references have been made to intruding on you.
If I am correct in the pm, please accept it, if for the only reason that this then gives a more complete overview of your masterpiece. As to your privacy, I will state this. I travel almost monthly between Bolivia and Vancouver Canada. Last year two TOTM's were from Vancouver [one nearby at Chilliwack] Neither one of these TOTM's would communicate with me so that I could visit their Reef's in person. I only point this out from the perspective that just because you become TOTM, you donot give up your privacy.
On your Solarium post, I am sure you have seen posts by Shutiny and her wonderful large reef Solarium here on RC.
I am considering moving back to Canada in the near future and so have put on hold temporarily a "Waterfall" Reef that you might consider.
Basically it is two Hex's, four foot square each on a common bottom plate of 4'X8' glass, having a common "wall" between them. One Hex is 30" tall and the lower one is 24" tall with waterfalling from the upper to the lower, back to back overflows in both with Tunze's inside and Waveboxes. Bonsai type reef on top and Japanese Garden reef in lower.

OK, thinking a little more about this, have an interest in sharks/big fish? How about a saltwater pond, or you could extend the koi pond indoors...
I have given some thought to turning my koi pond salt, just so when a fish or coral gets too big for the tank, it has somewhere to go...
Best,
Mark

You could do a tank that would almost serve as a refugium for your siplay downstairs that would Tie in great with the plants and flowers in the solarium. Set up a rimless (not zeroedge) with a center overflow, then do a seagrass tank that would be a small (or large :D) biotope featuring different seagrasses and the animals that live in them, ie. elegance corals, crabs, and the fish that dwell in the grass. You could incorperate several mangroves into the center overflow, which would hide the ugliness of the overflow, and the overflow would be a nice spot to place a pot with sand in it to hold the mangroves.
All of this would also be a great place for micro fauna to breed and you could gravity feed into your main display tank downstairs for the corals to feed on the microlora nad fauna that would make their way into the overflow. The seagrasses would also be a means of nutrient export in the same way that macroalgeas are used to soak up nutrients.

04/24/2008, 12:12 AM
With that type of idea, it could house a bunch of seahorses, pipefish and starfish perhaps.
JCTewks
04/24/2008, 12:16 AM
that would look great...seagrass, elegance coral, seahorses and pipefish!!!! I think that seagrass and a nice thick bright white sand would look great with all of the color from a solarium housing tropical plants and flowers...heck, put some parrots and butterlys in there and you'll have a nicer setup than most zoos :lol: good thinking melev!

How about a surge tank?
I think it would be fairly difficult to hide a surge tank in a solarium...unless you are talking about using the solarium tank as a surge...and I think that that would be a waste of space for a nice glass tank to be completely draining every few minutes.

I was thinking more along the lines of a mangrove pond or tide pool in the solarium acting as a surge.

chibopelu13,
Based on the number in your board nickname and your occupation (student), I will assume that you are probably a very young person.
Here are a few 'words of wisdom' that will help you avoid criticism in the future: Always read the entire thread before posting a question, especially a question about how much something cost. Had you done that, you would have seen that this question has been raised and answered previously. The owner of the aquarium has already said that he will not be answering such questions.
Happy reefing!
:D
I think he's learned his lesson. We all know there are rules here that are not necessarily in print but we sometimes need to watch others break them or we need to be called out on them ourselves before we know better.
I don't think we need to chastise him for a small forum fopaux.

Absolutely beautiful tank, hcrk.
I appreciate all the time you took to post the info and pics.
I don;t know if you'll find time to answer my question, but I'm curious- if you could do it again, would you build it in your basement? I know all the guys are drooling over your bar and all - but as a woman, I'd love to see it in a living room with tons of bookcases, big sofas with pillows and blanket throws. What a way to spend a weekend.... reading, and watching your fish. :-D
I believe the aquarium weighs about 6 tons....so it would likely end up in the basement even if I built it on an upper floor.
More seriously, although I am not a structural engineer, I expect that the vast majority of floors would not be able to support this sort of weight.
Far simpler to bring the bookcase, sofas etc down and create a comfortable environment in the basement.
Structural steel I Beams would hold the load crossed on to the foundation. Mine is all about 8 tons and in my den.

I had an idea since you always wanted to do a refugium. Why not a starphire glass refugium viewable from 4 side with seahorses, pipefish and others in that genus. Then maybe a separate area dividing it for clams and other exotics all with a top down view open look, maybe even incorporating the zero edge to it. Thats what I would do if I were you. I have the same type of setup for my tank with the refugium viewable in the lower level of the home and the display on the main floor.

Mine is being built as we speak. I am moving to another home which should be finished being built in couple of months. My tank has been ordered and i also am keeping it simple. If I can I will try to make a build thread on here. HCRK did a really great job on his tank although If I were him I would have put it on the main floor and the equipment in the basement, but everyone has their own preferences to design and schematics. I would love to see a video of his tanks, also all his pictures should be moved to his profile so we can easily access and see them at a glance without having to go through the whole thread to see the system.

Me too, I think that a lagoon with dragonetts, guinards, or perhaps even a rocky lagoon with mangroves and scorpion fish would be the bees knees. I guess that in a pond you would want alot of movement so maybe in the lagoon he could have tons of schooling fish and then a bunch of starfish and crabs in the background.

You know what is interesting....how many people that posted in this thread that are now "Moved On." I think I counted over 10. Anyway, your tank is amazing but you promised us some new pictures years ago. Please don't forget us!!
.....
I recently accessed this thread and noted that it still remains quite active - even though 5 full years have now passed since my very first posting.
As the 5th anniversary of this thread is actually coming up tomorrow and as a film crew was at our home last week filming an episode for Discovery Channel (which provided an opportunity for me to take a few pictures), I thought that this would be an excellent opportunity to post some fresh pictures of my now nearly 13 year old reef.
As the pictures indicate the reef continues to evolve and, on the whole, is doing quite well. Some inhabitants have passed on. However many remain and have matured and grown. There have also been a number of additions.
Comments and questions are certainly welcome.

WoW, WoW WoW... i'm speechless....i spend 2 days reading all your thread and i have learned a lot from all the posted and your answers.
i got one question about ich? so you said that you just leave the fish with ich inside of your tank right? but doesn't your water get contaminate by the ich? i'm so paranoid with this problem.... there is too many ppl that say that you should remove and put in a hospital tank... i really appreciate if you could explain this problem for many ppl here reading you thread

Although I have had outbreaks of Ich in the past, it has not turned out to be a huge problem. In fact, most fish seem to be entirely immune to ich and others seem to develop an immunity over time. The one fish that I have lost to ich in the past few years was a powder blue tang.
To my way of thinking, removing the fish to a "hospital" tank carries very substantial risks resulting from the added stress on the entire fish population induced by the process of capture and removal.
I am certainly not suggesting that others follow my lead and simply ignore ich. All that I am saying is that this approach makes sense to me and has been successful in my Reef.

........I wonder if there are very many large reefs that have been around for longer than 13 years? (or is this some sort of record on RC).
I don't know about Reef Central, but, sadly, all of those large reef aquariums that inspired me when I first planned my reef, have now been dismantled. Things happen and people get discouraged or simply seen to lose interest. Building and maintaining a large Reef is an expensive and difficult undertaking and, accordingly, the "turnover rate" in this hobby seems to be very high.

You know what is interesting....how many people that posted in this thread that are now "Moved On." I think I counted over 10......
I too wonder haw many of the people who first posted on this thread are still involved in the hobby. It would be an interesting exercise to find out how many of the people that posted in the first few months are still maintaining their original aquariums.

I am just wondering if any of the original members of the tank still exist today.
Assuming that you are referring to the actual startup period of the Reef so many years ago - a large number of the fish have survived including many of the Tangs. When it comes to corals, quite a few of the soft corals have not only survived - but have multiplied (it is to be noted that a large number have been moved for various reasons and some have actually "evolved" in their appearance because of changes in water flow and light intensity).
Thanks, once again, again for your many kind comments.... and please do not hesitate to post further questions. Although I may not be able to reply in a timely fashion, I will try to respond.

hcrk, I know that I've been following this thread for probably a good 4.5 years, not quite sure just how long though. I do know that I have been subscribed to this theard since then and have waited a long time for updated, and would occasionally check for updates even when I kind of got out of the hobby. I can't wait to see video of your tank...It has always been an insperation to me, and I'm sure many others. We all thank you for sharing this with use. To answer one of your questions above, I just have one tank still going from when I started following this thread. It is a nano reef, that started out in a 5 gallon acrylic but was updated into a 12 gallon glass tank as I got tired of not being able to clean off the coraline. Other then that everything remained the same except for the loss of my 4.5 year old clownfish. It was a sad day! My two other tanks were taken down and sold, and one had just returned from the ashes just this past week.

although i have 70% lps and sps i still have mixed reef a will likely to keep soft corals because of this thread. Steve Weast to me had the greatest SPS predominated tank . i don't know what happen to steve weast tank after the crash. a innocent tap water that kills 10's of thousands worth of corals in one day.while soft corals will no die in one day or when the calcium reactor stop working or the nitrate go to 10. although David Saxby mixed reef still running and doing great i am here still gambling like most of us with SPS . hcrk should teach us a lesson.

hcrk,
Is the tank still up and running? If so, it would be about 15 years old now. You started this thread in May 2004 with the title 7+ years at that time.
I hope it's still going strong and that if you did experience any problems, they were not insurmountable.
Looks like you're browsing the forum right now, so hopefully you will give us a quick update. That would be nice.
Would love to see more tank pics and maybe a few more pics of your beautiful garden.
