From what I've been told you can only see them with a magnifying glass. I've been looking for a picture also.

They look similar to Aeolid (sp?) nudibranches that feed on soft coral, though smaller.

They are big enough to see without a magnifying glass, but they usually take on the color of the zoos that they are eating, so they tend to be hard to spot.

THANKS FOR THE PICTURE!
The creatures running all over your zoos are probably copeods and harmless. I notice that my pinks are very sensetive. They ar like the "canary in the coal mine" an are among the first to show stress if anything goes wrong (along with my flower pot coral). Have you tested your water lately?

Okay, so I've been going through the zoo nudi battle for about a month now. I never really cared for the zoos anyway but they always grew like mad & great looking once they start growning on your back glass. Another benefit was that I always had something to trade at local swaps.
So who else has been through this fight & how did you win?
It looks like I won the monti cap eating nudi battle by checking my tank every single night until I couldn't find any more nudis or signs of damage. But man that was a tiring 6 months of fighting!
I'm not sure I have the strength to do it again.
Is there some thing out there medication I could just dose to kill them off and take the easy way out?

Thanks for the great picture. I don't think I have any, but it is always good to know what to look for.

Usually how long are these little buggers?

Thanks Azilla for the AWSOME pictures!

Are the eggs laid right on the zoo?

Azilla
08/14/2004, 08:22 PM
Yes the nudibranchs will typically lay there eggs on the sides of polyps. They stay on there pretty tight (pretty important when ocean currents are involved :) I usually scrape them off while I have them in QT with a pippette and manually extract the mommies and daddies the same way. Some really hard core SPS owners will actually pay for Zoa eating nudis :)

Here is a picture of a zoo eating nudi. Not your friend when you have a couple hundred dollars of zoo's in your tank.

How long did you dip them for?? just wondering, in case i have to do it.

When I had to get rid of them, I sucked them out with a turkey baster and fresh water dipped them for seven to ten minutes everyday until they were gone. You just got to be on it when you see them. It's to bad that nothing eats them, the nudi's are too toxic.

Here's about 25 of the little buggers that I pulled of a 2"x 2" zoanthid colony... I was wondering why the zoas were elongating.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/21873zoa-nudis.jpg

The way I get rid of them is use a graduated eyedropper (like one used for medicine, with a bulb on it) and spray them off with saltwater in a bowl... they can't hold on very tight and the water stream just blasts them out.

Since I eradicated these nudi's the colony hasn't suffered a reinfestation... and it's not as stressful to the zoanthids as a freshwater dip.

Do you just leave the rock with the zo's in the freshwater, or do you have to shake the rock around?

Zigzag Man
08/15/2004, 06:31 PM
I think with the freshwater dip the nudi's writhe in agony and then just let go... which is guess is a fitting end for those dang things. :D
It's like bathing them in acid... and a little swish around in the water will probably help them 'out'. :D

what did you use to set your ph to 8.2?DOES TEMP AND pH HAVE TO BE PERFECT?
3. Set your PH to 8.2
4. Set your water temp. at 78 degrees

The nudis are really very selective in what they eat so it was probably searching for another patch of zoas to eat & proliferate in. Just remove all the ones you can find, & search often. My zoanthid colonies are just starting to come back. I just kept using a bulb syringe to remove them everytime I saw one. Maybe their populations are really low right now? I just hope I don't have another infestation after I get my colonies to recover.

If you miss a batch of eggs there can be hundreds more.
A six line wrass is supposed to eat them, But it is hit or miss at best.
You can use sailferts flat worm exit in a dip, and that will kill the adults and juvi's. I don't think that there is anything that will kill the eggs. :(

Ahhh! I just found these nudis in my tank on the side of the tank. I was wondering what was going on with my zoos. I think I'm going to go with the FW dip for now.

Really? Would it work to treat a tank like normal with the stuff?

I asked Habib this question & he said it was untested for nudis. There is a thread in the Salifert forum where I posted it. Basically he said use double the dose (under quarantine) but he said it's called flatworm exit not nudi exit.

Well lets all jump over there and get him to make it.:D
Seriously why cant a company make nudi's a thing of the past.
I wouldent use it in your tank. Just a dip.

I had this problem in my nano. fortunately the colonies infected were removable so i took them out and did freshwater dips which works real well. The hard part is getting the eggs out. Mine were a circular, whitish line. I used an exacto knife to scrape them off. I could imagine though where these would be hard to see in a nice full zoa colony.

I have a small sea shell with 5 or 6 zoos on it. Today I noticed 2 little red dots running around on the sea shell. They move fast but they are to small to tell what they are. How small are these zoo nudies? I don't know if I am being paranoid but I want to be on the safe side.

try dipping with lougals solution it seems to work well if you dip more then one colonie be sure to let them sit in some salt water after the dip cause they seem to obsorb (sp) the solution and if they are going into a small system it my be harmful to the other inhabatints after you put them back in the tank

rozli

Are they harmful to other softies and sps?. I have 8 colonies of zoos and only recently i did the dipping process, dont know whether it already infected my tank but so far have not seen any casualty.

ive seen what looks like the top half of one of these nudi's in one colony of my zoa's i did three! freshwater dips! the last one being 6 minutes... no nudi's fell off. i stuck a needle in this fap where the creature had been hiding and pulled out a clear tube that was very fragile. how do these nudi's live? do they just crawl around or do they live in clear tubes between zoa????

i have seen something eat them...but it is one evil for another...

i placed a zoo eating nudi in my fuge to see waht it would do...it crawls straight to an AIPTASIA and i see the aiptasia just suck it down like a raw oyster...

so, here is the million dollar answer and question...i can control aiptasia's but had a heck of a time with the nudi's. it took me months to control the nudi's but it is effortless to control aiptasias with a good peppermint shrimp and berghias!

like i said...one poison for another...you hafta decide which is more evil...

pics of the nudibranchs? No they are not under some sort of magnification... those nudis are about the size of a top mount pencil eraser.

1/2 a millimeter to 2 millimeter and anywhere in between for me. Very hard to see without a magnifying glass, they are a master of disguise.
I do find mornings is the best time to spot them.

How long after the dip did you see recovery in the zoo's. I dipped all my frags and colonies last night. I can't see any difference today and I am still seeing nudi's on my glass. I am removing them with a syringe as I see them. Have any of you had any luck with the wrasses they describe in the other post about nudi's?? I am so upset. I have lost about 8 frags that have gotten soft or totally disappeared. Please reply.

Thanks

CICLID67 why dont you try gettin a sea grass wrasse to eat your nudis? I asked my LFS and he said they are readily availible but for some reason fish stores dont sell them. the sell for aroun $12 and they will eat the nudis.

I haven't seen any colorful nudis on my zoos but I have seen some transparent nudi looking creatures on my aquarium glass. Are these some type of nudibranch's as well? They are real small and travel all over the glass but they are tarnslucent, no color at all and no branching looking things on their backs.

MrJeffrey

I have a problem with them for about a week. Kept using a turkey baster and some times tweezers. I pulled 18 out around the zoanthids. I than talk with some local saltwater stores and was told that a 6 line wrasse would do the job.

Well it worked. I did see some of the nudis but they did start to die off really fast. So with these three options they all worked well. However I have my zoanthids all mounted down already and could not use any dip.

Its been almost 1 month later and all is good!

Best of luck

:)

I am glad I found this thread, I saw one of those on my glass the other day and thought wow, one of those aptasia eating nudi's that reefscavengers.com offers, well maybe they are the same thing, but anyway, this would explain why my zoo's have been kind of down lately, I just added two more colonies of zoo's I had purchased and I bet thats were they came from, gonna use a dip on all of my zoo's and pick out the one's I see, and for anyone wondering about what reef scavenger's offers as aptasia eating zoo's here is a link, maybe they are the same thing, kind of look the same.

No, they're not the same thing. The Berghia Nudibranches ONLY eat Aiptasia and they die when the Aiptasia is gone. They do not eat Zoas.

guess you have to find and get rid of the eggs they have laid
