View Full Version : Faulty unit?

Well, after waiting patiently for my unit to arrive and by manually plugging/unplugging fans and monitoring temperature closely with a digital temp. I had to set up my reefkeeper.

I spent an hour routing wires, taking off existing timers, and running in my heater and fan cables to be controlled with the unit. On the second hour, I plugged in the unit and it worked fine for about 2 minutes, then everything turned off, but the display, and the channels did a little "night rider" dance going from right to left and back and then it would kick back on. This would last few more minutes before the same routine. It would display temperature and would operate normally for those first few minutes, but would repeat at what seemingly was a random timing... At first, I thought it was the turning on of the heater, as it was a fairly robust heater at 350w, so I thought it may be tripping a breaker or something... But I then unplugged the heater when all that was plugged in were the fans (not operational at the set temp) the actinics lights (only 100w) and the halides (which were still in the 'safe' mode). So all that was operating were the actinics and the heater which was then unplugged.

I thought maybe there was a loose connection of some sort, but I inspected my installation and all seemed to be fine.

After reviewing this forum, it looks like someone else was having a similar problem... I hope this can get corrected ASAP, as I'm having problems keeping my tank temp paramters stable with the system I'm currently running and my patience is running low, now needing to rewire my cabinet AGAIN to get my lights timed correctly again.

TIA

Is there something I did wrong, is anybody else having this problem, or am I just having an incredibly bad day with luck :( I'll spare ALL the details.

I just noticed that it's my T-5 actinic lights that are causing the problem. I have them on a seperate timer for the mean-time, but didn't know if there was anything I could do to prevent them from causing interference with the unit?

Thought I'd post a couple pics of how I mounted mine... It's not finished just yet, needs a sanding and some poly around the frame. I also didn't glue or screw anything into place for two reasons... One, it is snug enough in the precisely measured cutouts ;) Two, I don't know if I have to send it back yet, because of issues that my unit is having with the TRIAD ballast. Time will tell....

I noticed I have V 1.1... Will switching to version 1.3 correct any problems that have been mentioned?

e.g. my TRIAD ballast incompatibility and also the battery drain issue?

Nice install.

Can't answer the triad question. fwiw: mine is 1.1 as well but I am only running MH at the moment.

I do have a triad that is going over the sump though.

Cheers.

Hi ShoMuchFun,

The 1.3 software will indeed fix the battery drain problem. However, it does not resolve the issue with certain MH ballasts. We are actively chasing that problem and do hope to have a solution soon. It's a problem that affects a variety of digital equipment, including some of our test equipment (!). So, don't lose hope. When we get to the bottom of this, we will definitely let everyone know.

Also, as Nick mentioned in another thread, the quickest way to get support for the ReefKeeper is to email us at support@digitalaquatics.com. We have a very quick turnaround time with email.
