Does any keep calms in a barebottom tank?

Sure, just don't set them on the bottom directly. Put them on a flat piece of rock or clam shell, etc.

When I kept clams in my BB tank, I sat them on the bottom of the tank mounted on one inch sections of 2 or 3 inch PVC pipe depending on the size of the clam. They will attach to the PVC ring but can still be moved to facilitate siphoning of detritus, etc.

I have this same question. I have heard that clams like a bit of nitrates, which is minimalized by a BB tank.

Will clams thrive in "really clean water" conditions? I guess heavy feeding would keep them nourished?

Sure, clams will thrive. Despite popular opinion, there are ALWAYS nitrates in the water, no matter how clean the tank is or what our limited test kits say!

Highlander has good advice - BB is fine, just have something for them to attach to..

I have my squamosa and a golden maxima sitting directly on the glass and they are......well.....happy as a clam!

My other two maximas are on the rock work.
