how does the flush valve kit actually work? from looking at the pic, it see,s as if it just routes the water either through the ball valve or around it, still ending up going through the filter. I don't get it.

It is better to say it this way: water is routed through the flow restrictor (in normal operation) or just through the ball valve when it is flushing.

Tap/concentrated water remains in and around the membrane after shut-down. This concentrated water encourages scaling on the membrane. Bypassing the flow restrictor for 20-30 seconds lets water rush through the membrane housing, thinning out the water and scrubbing the membrane surface. Without back-pressure provided by the flow restrictor, water will not flow through the membrane, just around it.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd reinforce that it's a very good idea to flush occasionally. Before I did the membrane flush, I was getting a permeate pressure of about 50 psi, afterwards it was near 70 psi.
