i'm going to get a large Peacock Mantis in the not too distant future, in 30 gallon long tank, just considering what 'decor' to put in, how much live rock will be suitable? and would he prefer smaller pieces so he can scoot them about to how he likes it, as apposed to large pieces

Here is how I would set it up. I would use a combo of livesand and a little crushed coral as the substrate (maybe a 4" bed). Use 15 - 30 lbs of LR, with some smaller rubble for it to build with. I construct a cave for them, which they often use (though they do intensive modification). I use Grape Caleurpa in my mantis tanks to help the water quality, but this is just my preference and the caleurpa does need to be trimmed back. Also the plants depend on your light source (I use a power compact).
