The camera I used to take the picture was a Sony DSC-V1. No special lenses or anything like that just the one that comes attached to it.

Its scientific name is: Paracheilinus mccoskeri
Its common name is: McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
From what I've read, it will stay between 2-3 inches.

Do you have that Flasher Wrasse solo or in a school? If solo, how long has it been solo?
Beautiful fish.

Thanks for the complements!
The fish is solo and has been so for a little over a month now. The store I purchased this little guy from had both males and females, but I couldnt afford both of them. He seems happy as far as I can tell.
Are they generally kept in pairs?

They are reef safe.
ericriff,
I have had similar flasher wrasses in the past and my males always lost their color after about 6 mo to a yr. I think in the wild it is a male and his harem. Not to discourage you, non of mine looked that good.:)

ericriff, how much information do you have about this fish? Do you have enough to give me a helpful blurb on my ID page? If so, I'd be happy to add this fish to my site, giving you the photo credit.

How much did this fish cost? Does it still have its color? Did you keep it solo or find it a mate?

That's a very nice picture of Paracheilinus mccoskeri I ever saw. It ranges the Indian Ocean, and specimens mainly come from the Maldives and rarely from Kenya.
This is the Blue Flasher, Paracheilinus cyaneus, male displaying. It came from Sulawesi, Indonesia. I hope you like it, too. Please talk with me and post photos in my new column in "Reef Fishes". I will show all the 14 known species, including P. mccoskeri.

Hi all-
Some of my favorite fish!
From a friends tank:
http://www.gregrothschildphotography.com/wrasse1.jpg
My experience with this family of fish is they do keep their color- I feed them lots of mysis, brine shrimp etc. But they are jumpers so it's smart to keep the tank covered if you buy one. As I recall they cost about $30 to $40 here in California.

Nice Pic, gregr.
I like it (Spot-lined Flasher; Paracheilinus lineopunctatus, male), too. It has a rounded caudal fin.

Do those wrasses sleep in the sand at night?

No, they do not need sand bed; they produce a 'cocoon' and sleep among the rocks or corals at night.

On live aquaria .com, I just found out that they list the sand requirements for wrasses and gobies. Is it your opinion that that site is accurate in theri statements? I am looking for one wrass for a 180bb, and would not feel good with one that was itching for sand. I'd never put a yellow watchman goby in a bb. What is the purpose of the flasher cocoon? I had a sixline with a sandbed, and he never buried himself. However, he did slow down and 'idle' behind the rocks at night. If the rockwork was very open, with little to no protection from nocturanlly active fish, do you think that a flasher would be stressed? Sorry, just realized this is in photography...
Cheers,
G1

The things I read online state that McCoskers are plankton feeders. Does this mean they will not hunt the live rock searching for things like a six line and other wrasses?
