Welcome to Aquactinics Forum.

Aquactinics, LLC is a new lighting company dedicated to producing practical lighting systems for the Marine Hobbyist. Our new line of MH/T5 combo systems are designed to be placed directly on top of a tank without heating the water. Even our 400W systems only need about 2" of clearance. In addition to not heating the water, the external parts of the lighting fixture and remote ballast box get, at most, warm to the touch and in most cases stay at room temperature. The significance of this is that you can now place a MH fixture inside a canopy and not worry about it getting hot. Finally the size of the fixture also makes a difference. With its 8.5" wide and 5.5" high design, it will fit most tanks with room to spare.
In the next year Aquactinics will be coming out with new fixture designs of Double Ended bulbs, T5 only systems, and mini pendants. We hope you will use this forum to ask any questions that you would like regardless if it dealing with our products. Our goal is to help Hobbyists out with their lighting needs and concerns. If you would like to learn more about Aquactinics lighting systems and other products, please visit www.aquactinics.com (http://www.aquactinics.com) . Thank you for visiting the Aquactinics Forum.

Tom,

What ballasts do you use for the halides and the T5s?

The Standard magnetic MH ballasts I use are by Venture Lighting (http://www.venturelighting.com/) and the ballast I use for the T5s are the Workhorses by Fulham (http://www.fulham.com/) . I've never had one problem with either. I've worked directly with both companies to ensure a reliable lighting system. The Workhorses do a great job powering the T5s. I know there has been talk about how the Workhorses shorten the overall life of the T5s. I would just like to clarify something. The usefulness of a T5 bulb for a reef tank is greatly less then the lifespan of the bulb itself, regardless of which ballast you use. The use of a programmed start ballast for the T5s in this hobby will not extend the usefulness of the bulb nor provide greater light over a non-programmed start ballast, such as the Workhorse.

I also offer IceCap Electronic MH ballasts as an upgrade.

All MH ballasts are housed in a ballast box with an extruded aluminum heatsink on top. The design runs so cool that the top of the box only gets look warm and the sides don't warm up at all. As for electronic ballasts running cooler, you can't even tell the difference between a ballast box with the magnetic ballasts inside and a ballast box with IceCap Electronic ballasts inside. It runs that cool. The T5 ballasts are light weight and are located inside the lighting fixture.

Here is a picture of the ballasts box. This box is used for all fixture sizes and wattages.
