If i were to go 4ft width do you think i would need the extension?
Also how exactly does the extension work.. since it doesnt come with the controller does that mean it will only run at full blast, or would it hook into the first waveboxes controller also? Also is it possible to get the two waveboxes in the same rythum?

The 6091 Wavebox controller has 2 cords coming out of it, master and slave. The 1st Wavebox is the master and the extension is the slave. Depending how you have the internal jumper set in the 6091, you can run them in "Syncron" mode (default) or "Inverse" mode. The Sycron mode would have the Wavebox and the extension on the same end of the tank working together in sync. In the Inverse mode you would have the Wavebox and the extension on opposite ends of the tank and they would work alternately.

Roger will have to chime in regarding the 4' width.

I think you would need the extension for a 4ft wide tank.

The cut off point would probably be around 3ft in width, does that sound about right?

Yes, about 36", volume and length also have an impact.
