Hi,

I'm a new guy to RC as well as saltwater aquariums (I have had a 20 gal freshwater community tank for years). I recently setup a new 90 gal saltwater tank, added the water and some aragonite sand and have let it setup/soak for a week or so. I was going to purchase LR from my not-so-local fish store (NSLFS?), but they've run out of LR and need many weeks to get new stock and cure it.

I'd been reading about TBS and following the forums, and decided over the weekend to leave the "safety" of the NSLFS and buy from TBS - I've been very impressed by both the quality of the product (as seen in all the pictures shared on RC), which looks genuinely superior, as well as the consistent positive reports of great customer service. It's such a pleasure to do business with a firm that treats customers well, and all reports I've seen about TBS have been very, very positive.

So I was bummed when I called on Monday and got no answer to my phone call, voicemail, or email sent. Reading into the RC forums further got me thinking it may be 30 days or more before I could get some LR from TBS! Calls on Tuesday also went unanswered, and I started thinking that I was going to get really squeezed...

I have to go out of town in two weeks for 10 days, and I'd planned to get a some LR and some LS into the tank this week, let it cycle while I'm here to monitor and take care, then leave it while I'm out of town (with some help from the aquarium knowledgeable house sitter) - but if I coulnd't get through it was looking like I'd get the whole thing pushed out by a month.

Good new today, I called this morning and Mary from TBS picked up. She could not have been more pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful. She told me they'd had Monday off (President's Day) and then were out sick, and today was "catch up" day. She had my order request from Monday, and the great news is that she tells me they may be able to get my 1st half shipped by the end of the week (no promises!)! It sounds like they're diving a lot this week (I don't know what the key weather issue is for them to get diving, but it looks like a pretty good marine forecast for Tampa Bay this week: http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/GM/830.html). Mary was very helpful with my questions, and I'm already impressed with their customer service.

So here's a picture of my tank as it sits, moving water along.

I'll update the thread when I hear back and let you all know when my 1st half shipment ships!

Michael,

Hopefully you will be able to get it the end of this week, but if you don't, just remember it will be worth the wait!:)

Yes, I'm sure I'm going to be delighted!

I've run through just about every 25-page forum story about people setting up their tanks with TBS packages and am really impressed - I think I'll have a very different, more interesting, and vibrant tank then people who take what they can get from their LFS (or even many who get LR online from other sources)...

Thanks!

You must not have read my threads then...the first one was about 80 pages....maybe more. I think my current thread is in the 30's already. lol :D

Hey, do you have a close up of your sump? Are you going to use is a fuge or what? I'm just trying to decide how to set mine up. Thanks.

Here's a pic of the sump as it sits today:

I'm trying to "keep this simple", and intend to have a fairly deep sand bed, seeded with some live sand added to the aragonite you can see in there already, and some macroalgae, and that's about it.

I'm going to add a protein skimmer to the sump, I ordered it yesterday from Marine Depot.

BTW, there's an interesting chart there that includes the actual flow from the mag pumps with the height of the life included. My MAG-3, "rated" at 375 gph actaully only will do about 210 gph given that it has to boost the water about 5' from the bottom of the sump to the outflow at the top of the tank. I hadn't considered that...

The chart is here:

Thanks, I have a mag 7 for a 72 gallon tank but I havn't tried it out yet. I'm still trying to install my ro/di unit. I didn't know that it was going to take a enginering degree to install one of these.

Wow... I was totally surprised by the call this afternoon from Delta Cargo - we have "live fish" at Logan cargo for you!

Way to go TBS!

A huge relief, even though I was not totally prepared for the shipment tonight! Now I'm sure I'll be here for the first 10-14 days to cycle the tank... Way good...

I drove to Logan (about 3/4 hour), got the three boxes, got them home, and after a little family action my oldest daughter (12) and I unpacked and "installed" the setup.

First was the live sand - since I already had a base of aragonite sand, I only got ~20 lbs of TBS LS. It is much darker and coarser then what I have, but I kind of like the contrast, and I figure over time it'll all combine (or maybe not, I still like the contrast).

With the sand spread out over the tank floor, and some in the sump too, we started taking a look at the rock and hitch hikers. What fun - as my daugher said, "this is like tide-pooling in our living room!".

The rock was neat, full of life (I haven't figure out any of what it is yet, but it's neat), and wonderful. The only thing I already want is *more* then I've ordered (due to blowing the budget already I ordered a 40 gal package).

We got a lot of hitch hikers - a cool long-leg star, and a number of little crabs. Even a cool sea urchin.

Here's what I have tonight - as you can see it's a fine start, but not enough to create much of an aquascape....

But we're psyched - my daughter really had fun helping check into the boxes, finding the critters and life on the rocks, and I'm 100% sure we'll all enjoy watching our new aquatic environment evolve!

The levels of all were "normal" at the end of the day:

specific gravity 1.024
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 0
PH 8.2

we'll see how things go over the next few days!

Very pleased with TBS product and customer service. I'm guessing since I had a small package they were able to get me out today, boy it's a huge help so I didn't get pinched for time with my travel out of town in a few weeks!

After 18 hours everything looks nice, but...

ammonia's gone up to 0.5

so I'm starting to get a little concerned

there's a sponge-looking thing on one rock that's 1/2 white and 1/2 brown/orange, maybe that's OK? I'm so new to observing these organisms that it's really hard to know if things are OK or not-good.

I think I'll just leave it alone unless the ammonia levels continue to rise to 1, as TBS recommends.

Michael....come join in on my thread. There's a bunch of people who just got their TBS also, and many of their questions are being answered there.
