Well after loosing my 240g tank from an accident. More info on what happened can be viewed HERE (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=392144&perpage=25&pagenumber=11)

I have been planning my new tank a 300g 96" X 24" X 30" room divider viewed from 2 sides separating the dinning room and living room. Both 8' viewing panes of glass will be Starphire glass. Tank will have no overflow box going with 2 2" bulkheads for surface skimming same idea as this picture.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/240FOWLR/plumbing-5.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">

Tank will have a closed loop ran from a GenX PC55 with 2 educators for the returns. Sump and all pumps will be in basement. Return pump from sump will still be my old pump Gen X 18000 4750Gph.

I will be updating this thread as the build comes together.

sounds like a fun project-- why no box?
Is there an advantage to the pipes?
I would think they might be loud.

The box takes up to much space in the tank. Since my tank will be viewable from both sides I don't want a ugly overflow box on one side. I don't loose the durso stand pipes they are just moved to the outside of the tank like this picture.

I guess I'm a sucker for punishment LOL! No really I like glass for its properties. The accident with my 240g was a freak accident I will never no what caused the tank to crack that way. Others did what I did and had no problems.

spamin76,

Thanks...

Mad Scientist,

I hope it will be worth the extra expense:)

how much did you pay for your 300 gallon starphire tank? Is all three side side starphire or just the front panel?

hdtvguy
04/08/2005, 01:03 PM
Not sure the cost yet of the Starphire yet. It will run in the $$$ thousands. I went with 2 96" X 30" panels. This will be a room divider so I got the front and back panels Starphire.

A little more progress on the tank and the plumbing. I was having problems with the lack of space I have on the side of the tank where all the plumbing and the closed loop pumps are. I wanted the closed loop pump and the Gen-X PCX 55 pump to be up as far as I could get them so I will not loose much head. It should be worth the extra effort

The area will have a access door on the side and the whole stand both sides will be drywalled in. My return pump and sump will still be located in the basement.

We got the braces on the tank also installed the small overflow box but still have to get black plexi around it. Also got the Starboard in.

Here are a few pics of the progress.

probably part of the most exciting thing about setting up a new tank is when you first add the water to it...i don't know what it is about this hobby.,but it does get ya excited..

can't wait to see this thing up and running..awesome planning job so far..

That is a nice looking setup! Hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions.

What is your stand made of, looks like a black plastic stand (I've always liked them).

The gang valve you have on the top pump, what sort of valve is that, never seen anything like it. Is it electric, so the different ports open and close giving you a random pattern? Also, where'd you get the black pvc? Is that sch. 40 or something else?

Very nice!

-Chris

Mad Scientist, Thanks

Triggerfish, This is so true LOL. Can't wait to get the water up to the overflow.

reef-fossil,

The stand is from my old setup skinned in plywood. It will be covered with drywall and built into the wall painted to match the walls.

The valve is called a OM 4-way. Yes it is electric. Uses a drum inside that turns to give random flow into the tank. The black pipe is not PVC it's ABS. I used this because it is black. Looks better with the sides of the tank that I painted.

Thanks again for the comments allot of planning has gone into this tank. More updates to follow.

I was testing the Penductors with the Gen-X Pcx55 pump. Wow shoots all 8' across the tank then comes back under. I moved the pump however just under the living room floor. The fan on it was to loud.

I made a nice cover from some leftover black plexi I had from my overflow. This should keep splashing and noise to a minimum.

Here is how I did my overflow pipes (Dursos).

I did a few changes to my pump setup. I first got rid of the dart was having problems with it. I upgraded to the Hammerhead. I moved both the Gen-X PCX-55HP and the Seq under the floor in the living room. No noise no heat very please with the outcome. I should have done this from the start :) My flow is crazy in the tank. I added 5 Large show pieces of LR. My water is still a little cloudy from the salt. Stable at 1.023.

I will take some new pics tomorrow of the tank.

Yes they are great! i have ton of flow with them and the Hammerhead on the 4-way.

Here are a few pics of the tank got my lights up. Pics are not the best I need to box in the top of the tank. That is the next project

The fish picked them up from my LFS. I had the regal from my old tank. The large Naso with streamers came in from Hawaii. The LR are big show pieces (Haitian) I'm waiting for more to come in from my LFS.

I hate how the pics came out! They look washed out from the VHO's blasting out. I have to get my butt in gear and drywall around the stand and above the tank. They add more flow to the tank. Here is a link to where you can purchase them. You can read up on how they work and what types of pumps you need to run them.

looking good. couple of question though and I don't mean to be negative.
why did you add fish so early without letting the tank sit for awhile and you'll be adding more liverock with those fish in there?
also, why didn't you use eurobracing instead of cross bracing??
those cross braces should have been set inside the pains and not ontop. it makes a big difference in shear force. should hold but keep an eye out. isn't it fun building your own tank:D were did you order your PPG glass from?

hdtvguy
05/08/2005, 11:21 AM
No offense taken John. The LR I used first was fully cured very excellent quality. I never added the first fish till after around 1 week. With this amount of water volume 400g major flow in the tank very good skimmer. I was not concerned with a surge. Going to add euro between the cross braces really more of a splash guard. Never seen a tank built like that before? There are many ways to build a tank. Glass was ordered from B.C.

P.S Are you still selling the Hammerhead pump?

hdtvguy
05/22/2005, 01:10 AM
He was in my other tank. He is very docile. I have snails he does not even touch them. My regal tang gives him a slap now and then LOL. He has been good for the 8 months or so that have had him. That rock is great to work with very easy to stack very jagged pieces. Coraline has started to form on the starboard already.

On a different note today I went and saw another customer that shops at my LFS tank. He has a big Sohal tang that has out grown his tank and it keeps on splashing water and breaking his MH lights. He wants a new bulb for the fish. I was shocked when I saw this thing it must be 13-14" very fat and the colors on it our out of this world! It is by far the biggest and nicest Sohal tang I have seen including in pictures. It eats out of his fingers he gets along fairly well with a large powder blue tang that was in his tank. I hope to pick it up maybe tomorrow if not when I'm back in town again in around 2 weeks time. I will post lots of pics of him.

I finished installing my CoralVue ballasts and pendents. I'm very happy with the color of these bulbs. Very bright crisp white with a little hint of blue. For the most part I will be running the MH for viewing only. Will be using my 4 VHO URI Atinics for dawn and dusk effect. Looks like I will have to wait till I get back into town again to pick up the big Sohal.

Absolutely gorgeous tank! I love the Naso and the Clown.

I'm still trying to get used to the Starboard. lol I just think the tank would look so much better with a sand substrate. But, then again...I've never had a tank without sand.

What exactly is Starboard, anyway, and what is the benefit of using it?

spamin76
05/24/2005, 09:01 AM
Starboard is highdensity polyethylene HDPE - it is a kind of plastic used in boats and cutting boards. Starboard is just a brand name HDPE. One advantage of starboard is that it has been UV stabilized - otherwise it will react with UV and change colors - which is nice if you are running halides.

People are starting to use starboard as opposed to sand beds since in sand detritus will settle into the sand, break down, produce nitrates and phosphates - with starboard it is very easy to syphon the stuff off every few days and just get it out of the tank. Another advantage is that it allows you to run extreme flow through the tank without having to worry about stirring up sand storms(it is very popular with SPS keepers who try to turn over the water volume of a tank 30+ times per hour).

So basically the advanatages of starboard - lower nitrates, easy maintenance, high flow without any adverse side effects(clouding, sand blowing around)

Bit of an update. We were unsuccessful in trying to catch the big Sohal Tried for an hour with 3 nets. He is to large to even fit in the biggest net! Owner is going to try and egg crate off part of the tank in hopes in getting him. Tank is looking good all water parms are bang on! I did get a new fish yesterday it's a French Angel about 6". My LFS has had this guy in for around 2 months and he eats like a champ. I did some major cleaning to the tank when I got back into town. I used a turkey baster and blew off all the rocks. Wow did allot of gunk come out. Did a 20g siphon- water change off the bottom to remove the detritus.

My Ro unit while I was gone plugged up. My membrane was clogged and I had a bad carbon cartridge. Jayson at my LFS store was nice enough to come down and fix the problem while I was away My girlfriend had to buy some 5 gal jugs of Ro water from the store for a few days. She was not happy

I didn't think there was such a thing as an ich free tank. I thought all fish carried the parasite and it was always present. It just awaits a stressed or weak fish to attack.

Another update........

Got a few new fish 3 yellow tangs and a copper butterfly fish since my last update. Tank is doing very well. I have no problems with nuisance algae have major coralline algae taking off in the tank. Still got to get my butt in gear and get the framing done around the tank. I will wait till fall time since I have not much time in the summer months to do anything

That has to be the best lookin tank or RC. :) Seriously!!. I don't know why, there's just somthing about it that makes it incredible. I think it has to do with how plain the tank is, and then you add all those colorful fish it's just really neat. I really love how it's a room divider also. I would LOVE to do that someday. Keep up the good work.

I picked up a very large adult queen Angel yesterday. It is one of the nicest Queens I have seen. It is dinner plate size I was surprised when I introduced it to the tank that there was no aggression from my French angel. Must be the size difference I also bought a very large sponge for my angels to feed on. They have yet to sample any of it My trigger however did nip at it once but has not bothered it since.

I have not given up on it yet! But the owner of it is not willing to rip his tank apart to catch it:( I hope sometime in the near future to get it.

No, I never silicone around the board. I wanted to be able to remove the Starboard if I did not want to use it anymore. Detritus does get in-between the glass and the Starboard makes for easy removal be weekly siphoning.

Yes I was going to add some clowns to the mix. Need some red orange in the tank. Well I added a coral to the tank to see what I can get away with. A yellow leather coral my sponge I added a few weeks ago is doing great in the tank. I thought my angels would have ate it but I'm lucky so far.

The queen really is a beautiful fish my next angel will be a Emp. My queen has been a picky eater have not seen him eat to much. He picks at the rocks and sometimes food feed to the tank.

I added a leather coral 2 weeks ago. It is doing very well no one was picked at it Added some mushrooms and a frog spawn coral. I thought my angels would have gone for the fleshy frog spawn. To my surprise not even a nip from any of them My 4 cleaner shrimps are doing well. My trigger went right to them for a cleaning as soon as I put them in the tank. I consider myself very lucky with the mix I have in the tank so far. Just goes to show you nothing is text book. Trying to bend the rules as much as possible :)

He really was not eating very well since I got him. I thought he would overcome that...but no luck. His body had stiffened up and he could not swim anymore. Great tank high def

I am a newbie and I have a few questions for you. I want to be sure I understand how your tank is set-up, for my future tank project.

THe way I understand your set-up, for circulation your tank has 2 main feeds to move water. One is the return from your basement sump. The other is the closed loop, which takes water out of the tank via a bulkhead, then a pump returns that water back into your tank at a high velocity...there are no filters in this loop, just the pump.

For filtration you are using the "Berlin" method consisiting of about 1/3 of the tank filled with LR, and then you have a powerful skimmer in the basement sump.

Does this summarize your filtration and circulation?
Do you use any other filtration, like mechanical or wet/dry?

Thanks!

Thanks........ The Naso is around 9". What part of the city did you live in?

angelfishlover,

Fizhstiks,

Thanks...... As of now they all get along just fine.

Apone,

I have 2 CL on the tank. One is with a OM 4-way ran by a Hammerhead pump. The second CL is a Gen-x 55Hp pump ran off penductors. I have a basement sump which I run a wet-dry and a massive skimmer, UV, Ozone etc. My return pump from the basement is a Gen-x pcx-40.

This is a really great tank.

I feel your tank is one of the best because it goes against the "traditional" methods.

1. You keep multiple large angels in the same tank
2. You keep a good amount of fish in your tank, not just a sparse population like many do.
3. You mix corals with lots of fish, including large angels with the corals, which is typically not done.
4. You dont use a DSB.
5. Lastly, you keep a wet/dry with corals!

I am really glad I found your post. I currently have a well stocked, fish only tank, witha wet/dry myself. Eventually I would like to keep a few corals as well, but everything I have read has always summarized keeping corals by saying: no large angels, no large fish load, and definately no wet/dry.

Your tank is the first I have seen that combines different styles...good job!

Do any of the angels pick on the corals? Also, can you tell me what type of corals those are?

Thanks,

I really wanted to push the limits on this tank. Traditional methods of running a beautiful tank can be mixed to have great success.

Well first off every fish and tank is different. You can not go by the book when mixing livestock. With my Trigger he is docile, he never picks on my snails or my 4 cleaner shrimp. He even gets cleaned just like you would see in the wild. Now if you look at a book it says they are not reef safe. You have to keep your livestock well feed. If my Angels and trigger were not eating enough of the right foods maybe they would nip eat the corals. But this is not the case in my tank! So what it comes down to is every specimen and tank is different. Many people may not agree in what I'm doing with my setup and that is fine they can have their opinions. As long as the fish and corals are healthy water quality is excellent I see no problem at all.

Right now have only a few corals mushrooms, yellow leather coral, frogspawn, and a coral from the brain family of corals. Not sure the name. Never see any fish in the tank nip at any.

Mar:rollface:

Biggest thing is waste from the fish. Getting it out of the tanks ASAP. With a good skimmer high flow in the tank (turnover). Running UV and ozone both helps IMO. Running bare bottom is great lets you have high flow in the tank plus you do not have a bio-load from the sand-bed. Water changes I do 50g every 2 weeks I also skim wet. I also keep the tank temp at 77-78F to help with oxygen levels in the tank. Running a non traditional wet-dry helps with gas exchange and adding oxygen to the water. It also helps with the biological filtration from spikes from high bio-loads ( removes them fast).

I also Have thought about running a wet-dry. But was told this would lead to high nitrates. Have you had any problem with nitrates? If so how do you handle them? or why don't you have trouble with them?

I have not had a problem with them. My use of ozone with a large skimmer helps. Also water changes every 2 weeks is a must IMO.

With my setup running BB with high turn over rate in the tank gets everything out of the water and down to the sump fast.

The tank is looking beautiful as always. Hey what type of angel fish do you have. Not the emporer but the one that is dark blue and orange. That is a beautfiul fish, well all of them all are. Are things still going good with the clown trigger? I am thinking about getting one when I set up my 200g bb. Good luck with everything.

Thanks,

That is a large majestic Angel. Clown trigger is doing great he loves Norri sheets. He is a pig, Well all my fish eat really well for that matter :)

Just be careful when adding a Clown. Mine has been an exception to the so called rule:)

Yes I know that one must be careful when adding a clown to the tank. I might just play it safe and add a blue throat trigger instead. I like the colors on the males alot. Thanks for the info on the angle, will have to do some research on those. I am still trying to get a final list of fish for my 200g. Thanks

Looks great as always!

I was wondering if you were going to try including a butterfly into your tank with the corals you have in there. Specifically, one of the classic non-reef butteflies, like an auriga for example.

I ask because seeing as you are successfull with keeping large angels and corals, I wonder if a butterfly would also have the same successes?

hdtvguy
12/17/2005, 01:19 AM
I do not want to try. They tend to be very timid fish and would not hold there own with the big Angels.

Have you ever thought about a grouper like a miniatus? He might crush on those chromis but would look pretty sweet in that mix.

I have a 200 with 10 big fish in it also. The secret to keeping it disease free/stree free is to never add any fish after about 3-4 months. My fish never scratch, etc. When I was adding fish all the time I always had ick, fighting the new arrivals, problems. If hdtvguy can stop adding fish soon his tank with be extremely reliable and no problems. Even if one dies in a year, don't replace it. It seems there is always a problem when new fish are added to an established tank. I have had these fish for 6 to 7 years. I also do weekly 20% water changes. Always do the water changes, don't miss any weeks. In all those 7 years, I have never used any RO/DI, etc. I just use plain tap water. Never seems to be a problem with the fish. I have a wet/dry, no live rock, fish only tank. As for Queens, they are a problem. I had 2 in the past. They lived for only 2-3 years, but always had a problem with not eating for a week at a time. One lfs owner said they usually live only about 1 year. He didn't recommend them.

Were any of your queens juvenile when you got them or older fish?

buldog
12/18/2005, 02:11 PM
One was a juvenile and one was about 4-5 inches. The last one was actually a Blue Angel. It developed a bad habit of constantly chasing bubbles from the return. In about 3 years it went on about 6 one week times it would not eat. The emperor angel I have has never done that in 4 years.

I added a large Anemone to the tank. I was hoping my clown would host in it......Well after 10mins from putting it in the tank my perc was in heaven. I added it to my tank about 2 weeks ago he is loving the flow in the tank! He has moved a bit around the rock but stays right at the top close to one of my MH lights and close to a output from my 4-way. I have feed him once with a silverslide soaked in Selcon and he digested it in a day or two. My perc does not let my larger maroon clown come even close to it chases him away. Very funny to watch. I have moved my 4 actinic VHO URI bulbs closer to the water surface for better light penetration. They are about 3-4" above the water surface they made a big difference in the color of the tank compared to when I had them mounted 15-17" above. My MH were washing them out. I'm hoping to start on the framing of the tank to build it into the wall next week.

BTW, what are you feeding the angels? particularly that Regal, ?

Thanks, I may start adding some SPS corals very soon. I feed all my angels Hikari Angel food high in sponges. They also gets sheets of red/green Nori, Mysis, Bio-Plankton, and stable flake food. I add Selcon to the food once a week. I had to return the Regal he was not doing well with the larger Angels in the tank. He was having a hard time competing for food.

I had some time to do some work on the framing and drywall on the tank. On a sad note my majestic angel passed away. No cause not sure why just stopped eating one day. He was very large full adult size. Maybe old age? He will be sadly missed:(

All other fish and corals are doing great! I had a chance to get a very nice 6" Gold flake Angel. I have wanted one for a long time. They are hard to get and come with a premium price tag. He has settled into the tank very nice with no aggression from any of the other Angels. Here are a few shots of the tank.

I little with the yellows to wards the Achilles. the yellows would not let him swim anywhere besides one corner of the tank that lasted a few days and now he swims all over the tank.

I have a total of 8 tangs and 5 Angels.

My tank stays ich free because of good water conditions lots of flow running bare bottom. Ozone in the tank and I run UV. Diet is also a major factor to fighting off parasites.

Great tank. After reading this last post HD, I am thinking about pulling out some of my sand in my heavily stocked 135, especially in the sides and corners. Just out of curiousity, does your anemone have a strong feeding response? Meaning, does it rapidly close up around the food to engulf it, or does it close only near the food and slowly bring it towards its mouth?

Thanks,

Why are you having problems in the tank like algae blooms etc? How much sand do you have in the tank? I'm a big believer in flow even if this is not a SPS tank. Flow plays a major factor in the health of fish and the tank in general!

I took a chance and well I now have to slow down on the feedings he is growing to fast! When I feed him he slowly brings the food to his mouth and open his mouth. Yes you and many others are shocked when seeing a clown trigger with cleaners and snails in the same tank. All my fish are well feed.

Where are the other pics or threads of the other Canadians with healthy Mags?

I love the new fish!
I just wanted to know what you do to keep the fish healthy and parasite free...do you quarentine new arrivals? If so how long? DO you use a UV steralizer or anything?

Thanks,

No I do not quarantine any new fish at home. My LFS has all his tanks with meds he runs a massive ozone generators on all his tanks. The supplier of his fish is very clean I have seen pics of the warehouse very impressive.

I run a Ozone generator on my tank and a 40w UV. I run a very slow GPH through the UV. This combination with high turnover in the tank pristine water conditions huge skimmer and water changes and a good LFS with awesome fish is why I can run such a great tank IMO.

hd, i'd like to ask you a couple questions.

What would you recommend to control ich? 40 watt UV or a ozone.

I'm not to familar with ozones. I hear that they work wonders. I know you can hook them up to some skimmers. can you give me as much info on ozones as possible.

IMO UV and ozone works better with a BB tank with lots of flow. I say this because the ick parasite falls off the host during it's cycle. With a sand bed the parasite has a chance to grab or hide in the bed to begin its cycle again. With lots of flow in the tank and running bb the parasite has no chance and is swept up by the current and removed to the sump where it comes in contact with your ozone or pass through the UV.

UV and Ozone both have there pros and cons. It would be best to use both together to help combat parasites. Do a search here on RC on "Ozone". Lots of good info here on both subjects.

Not to sure if something catches me eye at my LFS. I'm leaning on adding 2 flame Angels to the tank but we will see.

Full tank shots should have some up by the end of the weekend. I have more mudding and tapping on the drywall to do fun fun fun.
