Well after loosing my 240g tank from an accident. More info on what happened can be viewed HERE (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=392144&perpage=25&pagenumber=11)

I have been planning my new tank a 300g 96" X 24" X 30" room divider viewed from 2 sides separating the dinning room and living room. Both 8' viewing panes of glass will be Starphire glass. Tank will have no overflow box going with 2 2" bulkheads for surface skimming same idea as this picture.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/240FOWLR/plumbing-5.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">

Tank will have a closed loop ran from a GenX PC55 with 2 educators for the returns. Sump and all pumps will be in basement. Return pump from sump will still be my old pump Gen X 18000 4750Gph.

I will be updating this thread as the build comes together.

Sounds nice...I love inwall "see-through" systems. I set up a 210g similar to your setup a little over a year ago and it really turned out awesome.

Can you elaborate a little on the bulkhead drains? I've run systems in the past with drains like this, and I always had problems with noise. Is there something unique that you'll do to help w/ the noise?

Just curious, always open for new ideas. Good luck with the setup.

Nice size. Curious why you chose no overflow. Won't those drains make more noise then dursos'?

Well you can use dursos on them but they have to be out of the tank like this picture.

Or you can just do this on the 90 on the outside of the tank. In this picture.

I have drains like this, they make little to no noise if they are sized properly. Mine are made of black pvc on a blacked out acrylic background. I like it much better than an overflow. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance. The trick is to get one flowing fully, and make one adjustable (higher in the tank) to reduce the noise. Turn the adjustable one down until the suction noise is gone.

Put one higher in the tank? Trying to visualize.

Ofoto? Not iphoto lol. Nice..Microsoft and their blatant rip-offs.

alvin

I have no idea what ofoto is, it just came with my phone as the standard free upload software. It's web-based.

www.ofoto.com

The higher drain is mounted flush with the water level. The lower is about 1 in below water level. To balance the flow, turn the higher drain clockwise/ (or cc for that matter) until the gurgling sound disappears. That will happen when each drains flow is balanced and continuous. The upper drain should flow some air. The lower should flow no air (i.e. no little air vortices sucking down from the water surface).

I'm going with the same type of setup on my 190. HDTVGuy, what are the tops/skimmer top that is being used on the drains? Where can I get some? I need a 2" and a 3/4" one. Thanks.

Nice setup there alvin.

Not to change the subject but I wonder how these drains work w/ the tunze wavebox if at all. I guess time will tell.

alvin
03/22/2005, 06:47 PM
I would assume not too well. I personally think the wave box is a horrible idea in practice (but a very slick and well engineered design). It's a good way to lose 1/2 the life of you tank.

As for plumbing supplies for these, I got mine at a lowes. These type of drains are used as floor drains I think. Mine are 3 inches in diameter for the intake useing a 1.5 in. ID pvc. They have a drop in grate that fitts snug enough that you do not have to glue it, but it can be removed easy enough. It uses the exact same principle as an overflow without the waterfall noise and overflow box. My setup has only had rock and light in it for 2 weeks (hence no fish in the pictures). Coraline should cover these up pretty nice in due time.

Maybe if you like glass tanks that are poorly built. Acrylic is by no means affected.

It looks like your plans are coming along well.:) I am curious how big your sump will be. It will probably have to hold a lot of extra water with your non-overflowing drains.

Thanks Alvin. I've done some preliminary testing with my setup and using a 2" drain pipe and a plumbing setup similar to what you have, It seems to work fine with minimum noise. All of this before I ever saw this thread. ;)

hdtvguy, Tank looks sweet, I love the fish room behind it!!!.....I so want to move all my stuff to the basement, but as it is my electric bill is high enough.

Question.....how do you create a link and name it what you want?

Like you did here... Well after loosing my 240g tank from an accident. More info on what happened can be viewed HERE

alvin
03/23/2005, 05:57 PM
exp. for duct tape. (please excuse hijack)

besides being really cool, I was getting a tiny bit of salt creep just outside of my bulkheads. basically means a little bit of water is seeping through. I also had micro bubbles. My pipes vibrated just a little bit due to the distance the straight pipe had to travel to get past the 2x4s in the picture. Being an engineer, this bothered the hell out of me, so instead of buying a bunch of clamps, I just taped the dang things down to the 2x4's. No more salt creep, no more bubbles, no more vibrations, no more LCF pipe failures. I designed an airflow pipe system for the JSF a couple of years back. Lockheed prefers Inconel to duct tape. No imagination.

hdtvguy, let me know if you have any trouble dialing these in for sound. it may be tricky with three of them (if that is even your setup). other than that I'm out. John

NHMarine,

Just look up at the top when you post you will see a "http://" button click it add your text then the URL for the link.

Alvin,

Anyway you can get a really good close up of the overflows (Bulkheads)? You said you used floor drains at Lowes? I have heard that these overflows do a good job at surface skimming. How do you find them in this aspect? Thanks for the heads up I may take you up on your offer for help when I'm tunning the system.

mako56

Can I ask where you had the tank built and how much it cost? I have a plan for the same kind of thing.

hdtvguy
03/24/2005, 02:37 AM
Not sure what the cost is going to be? I'm having the 2 96" X 30" panes of starphire shipped and the tank will be assembled in my house.

Not a problem. I'll see if I can get a decent camera. I need to go to lowes so i can build myself a moonlight. I'll just put one (overflow) together there in the store and take some pictures of it.

As for surface skimming, they do a really good job. I did a test and a single one of these will allow for sufficient drainage without overflowing my tank. You know how those snails get. John

hdtvguy
03/24/2005, 11:57 AM
Right on sounds good thanks. I wonder if I would be ok with just one 2" bulkhead for the overflow in the tank? Ya those pesky snails!!

alvin

I'd go for two just for the aformentioned reason. If one gets clogged your pumps will drain your sump into the tank causing it to overflow and burn up the pumps. It's just another safety factor. I'm going to lowes tomorrow morning, so I should be able to get some pictures of the overflow assembly. Man is it hard to type in the dark. (watching tank in dark)

hdtvguy
03/25/2005, 11:17 PM
Sounds good thanks. I'm also looking into doing this setup. The only thing I would do different is I would have black plexi on the inside of the weirs. Both sides of the tank will be black should blend in nice.

pretty much the same principle as the other drain, just more expensive due to acrylic costs. I think the pvc drans cost about ten bucks each. I'll get a better number tomorrow. JOhn

the one pictured is 3 to 1.5. You can get 4 to 2 also. I'd say go to lowes and build one to get a better idea. I've been known to build whole assemblies (cut pipes included) while in the plumbing section. the guys there know me by name.

I wish I had the balls to go into Lowes with my pvc pipe cutters and lay everything out first on the floor. It would save me alot of extra trips.

alvin
03/28/2005, 03:26 PM
they don't mind one bit. I use the pipe cutter provided and keep track of how many 6 ft sections I've used. I've done this a few times at both lowes and home depot. plus, you work a little faster and there is no chance of stopping to drink beer. You do get some funny looks from women, but most guys in the plumbing section understand completely. How many times have most of us gone to the store three times in the same day?

I'm using my old stand from my 240g tank. The whole stand will be skinned with green board then painted the same color as the walls. I did not want to install the drywall until the tank and all plumbing is completed. There will be no doors on the stand my sump and all pumps will be in the basement.

The canopy will also be built into the ceiling. I want to have access to both side of the tank. So doors will be on both sides above not sure what style of doors to go with yet?

tgunn,

I do have a 300g stock tank I can use. I may use it not sure yet.

mako56,

It really is not that bad, But I had help thanks Jayson and Kelly did a great job :) Hardest part was lifting the panes of glass up so high and keeping them steady. And of course the smell of the silicone was to much for me:rollface:

I got 2 new pumps today the first is the PCX 55 Gen -X to run two enductors on a closed loop. The second Seq Dart for closed loop ran from a OM 4 way. basically going to run 2 manifolds off the 4-way 2 of the ports will be capped. I will be able to use these at anytime if need be. Jayson at SWC talked to Paul at OM and he will be doing some mods to the drum for this application.

Still cleaning the tank up a bit more removing silicon. Starboard will be picked up and installed tomorrow. OM 4-way should be here by next week I hope.

Just curious where you got the stock tank. Feedrite carries poly/fiberglass resin tanks, but not the Rubbermaid stocks that seem so popular in the hobby.

That's good to know; I will have to give HD a call today and check into that.

I imagine getting them to get in a Rubbermaid stock tank is a bit easier than when I tried to get them to order a palette of southdown.

A little more progress on the tank and the plumbing. I was having problems with the lack of space I have on the side of the tank where all the plumbing and the closed loop pumps are. I wanted the closed loop pump and the Gen-X PCX 55 pump to be up as far as I could get them so I will not loose much head. It should be worth the extra effort:D

The area will have a access door on the side and the whole stand both sides will be drywalled in. My return pump and sump will still be located in the basement.

We got the braces on the tank also installed the small overflow box but still have to get black plexi around it. Also got the Starboard in.

Here are a few pics of the progress.

That glass is soooo clear.:D

On a CL system there is theoretically no head to overcome. There is though induced head from the pipes. I wouldn't worry too much about how low the pumps are, but try to have the right size pipes combined with very few sharp turns.

BTW, maybe you should get ozone so you can clearly see through the tank when there is water in there.

True but I will not have the doors anymore on the stand since it will be drywalled in around the stand. I figured putting them on the side of the stand will be better then running them from the basement. I would just loose to much. This should work out well.

Thanks for the spa flex much easier to work with then hard PVC.

I was testing the Penductors with the Gen-X Pcx55 pump. Wow shoots all 8' across the tank then comes back under. I moved the pump however just under the living room floor. The fan on it was to loud.

I made a nice cover from some leftover black plexi I had from my overflow. This should keep splashing and noise to a minimum.

Here is how I did my overflow pipes (Dursos).

For the dursos it looks like you drilled a hole in the end caps and installed a small ball valve to control air intake. Correct? Do they whistle? How do you like this setup?

Thanks. I will be installing similar weirs and bulkheads on two tanks.

Yes I used JG RO fitting for the air control. Not sure how it works yet? It should work just fine, I had a similar fitting on my old tank.

I see you are in Winnipeg also. Where do you shop SWC? What tanks are you going with?

min9a,

It was built on site in my living room. A LFS called Saltwater Connection ordered my 2 Starphire panes. The owner and I put it together.

Nice job......

Those overflows look sweet......... I like the fact that the overflows don't take up a lot of room in the tank.... What size diameter drains do you have in each overflow? The overflows in my new 400 gallon tank look huge compared to yours..... I like your layout better......

Did you have any issues getting the 4 way to work with the Penducters? I thought Oceans Motions units did not work with Penducters......

Keep us posted...... Nice work.....

hdtvguy, I use SWC and Fish Gallery and also the folks at http://www.myfreebulletinboard.com/f/index.php?mforum=wsaff&

I am fairly new to salt but am putting a room divider in my basement. It will be two tanks back to back - a 180 and a 135. The 180 will be a reef and the 135 will be FOWLR. Right now I have about 180 lbs of rock and a few critters in a 90, getting ready for the other tanks.

Have you found a good place locally to get MH lights locally?

Thanks,

That is why I went with this design. I have 2 1.5" drains. I'm not running the 4 way on Pens. I run a separate pump for them a Gen-X Pcx-55. They move some serious water!

jeno,

Sounds like you will have a nice setup. Reef and Fowlr back to back sweet! As for the MH lighting go see Jayson @ SWC he is going to be getting in some nice systems at a great price. I think he has put the order in already.

One question since I'm about to build my own tank as well.

When the siliconing was done did you use a standard size silicone cartridge or the bigger contractor size?

I am thinking the contractor size would be better because it would allow a bigger bead, but I can't find this size in silicone at the local HD.

Just used the standard GE II construction silicone normal size. Just cut the end off the tip further down. This will give you more then enough.

HDTV Guy,

I am also about to assemble a tank. This one is a 180 gallons.
I was hoping you might share some tips on assembly. I think there are a few of us that are quite curious about the details.
How did you set the pains of glass? I am wondering how many people I will need or if building a jig would help to hold it up. It looks to me that setting the last pain is the tricky part. Any advice would be helpful for my planning.
As far as the seams, was all of the silicon applied at once, or did you come back to do the insides after it was dry?
Can we get some datails about how you sized, ordered the glass?
Last question, where did you get the foam the tank is on, and what is it?

Looks sweet...

hdtvguy
04/25/2005, 03:39 PM
Well here is how we did it. At least I think it is:)

1.) Of course start with the bottom pane of glass. (My tank was built on the stand.)

2.) Run a thick bead of silicone on top edge of the bottom pane of glass. You want to start with the large viewing pane of glass first ( front or back.) It took all three of us to lift the 96 x 30" pane onto the top. When you place the glass on top be very careful to place it square on both ends. You do not want to move the glass to much. This will cause air bubbles to form not good for adherence, strength etc. Have someone hold this pane straight without moving to much.

3.) Next do a side pane same step as above. Make sure the edges are square. At this point you do not really need to hold the glass as the silicone has enough strength to hold in place.

4.) Next do the same on the next side.

5.) Last put your front or back ( large pane) on. Walk around all 4 corners and make sure all your ends are square. You may need to make a few very small adjustment to square everything up. You must use some big clamps and snug the front to back this will do two things. It will squeeze out any air that was trapped between the glass and will make sure you have good contact for the silicone to cure. I forgot to mention if you want nice clean edges (silicone.) Tape the glass before you apply the silicone.

6.) You must move fast on all these steps last run your finger along the seams to get a nice uniform seal. Last peel off your tape if you used it.

This gives you a little idea of how to construct a tank. I may have missed a few thongs but this covers most of it.

One more thing get out of the house after all is done the smell is overwhelming. 24hrs should be good have all windows open and a good fan. :)

DIYGUY
04/25/2005, 06:57 PM
Thanks, that is exactly what I needed to hear. I was mostly concerned with the assembly, but taking the thing apart has proven to be far more difficult. Fortunatly I got it apart without destroying it. The next question is how to support it. It sounds like you have yours sitting on plywood with the foam over it. Do you feel it is better to support the whole tank rather than only the edges? My glass is only 1/2", but there are no holes in it. I am prett concerned about it cracking if it is not supported correctly. How well are you supporting the center of the tank? Has your foam compressed much?

hdtvguy
04/25/2005, 07:08 PM
No my foam is very dense. I used 1.5" thick foam. You don't need to use that thick but I wanted to raise the tank a bit more. I'm 6' tall and the tank is taller then me standing in front of it.

Yes support the whole bottom of the tank. I assume your tank is all glass no trim around the base? Tanks with trim on the bottom do not need foam under them.

You can click my homepage button above and see how my stand was constructed. I used my old stand from 240g tank that cracked. Long story short I was doing a epoxy sand bed in that tank and the bottom cracked after the cure.

Yes, I have been tagging along for some time now. Dont usually post. I got this tank for a bill, but it was trashed. It is pretty scratched and the trim had to be pitched. That is why I am looking into the foam. It is a transitional tank and will allow me to build up some more livestock, so it just needs to hold water for a while. Looks like the foam you are using is the kind for insulating houses. I Wwould love to hear any info about how/where you got the glass and the difference in price for the starphire. Thanks for sharing your experience...

Just a comment on the smell:

I've caulked plenty of things around the house but never more than MAYBE 1/3 of a tube at the most. I would imagine this used a good bit more.

I could not imagine that much of a vinegar/acetic acid siliconey smell.

Yuck!

Good deal! Yes the foam is made by a company called Plasti-Fab. It has a R value of 5.83 SF 32. :p LOL

My LFS store got the Starphire 2 panes from a company in B.C Canada. I think the cost was $1500.00 96" X 30".

No problem good luck with your tank.

I did a few changes to my pump setup. I first got rid of the dart was having problems with it. I upgraded to the Hammerhead. I moved both the Gen-X PCX-55HP and the Seq under the floor in the living room. No noise no heat very please with the outcome. I should have done this from the start :) My flow is crazy in the tank. I think it was the way I had it mounted on my stand. If you look above you will see I was running it on the side of my stand. I was getting bearing noises from it. Paul @ OM was great I told him the problem and he said he would back me up on a return of the pump. I just returned the pump and paid the difference for the Hammerhead.

I am in the planning stages of a 3-side viewable starphire tank. Going to be a room divider also. I plan to go with the same dimensions that you have, only it will have entertainment center type custom cabinetry, with shelves and storage, room for the overflow plumbing and what-not, that I will build myself.

One question that I have is, would you recommend having the tank built onsite, or having it built off sight and delivered.?
I realize that if delivered weight will be an issue moving it in and setting it up. This could somewhat be eliminated by having a small hand forklift.
Also not sure if anyone in my area builds aquariums.

I read the thread where you posted about your 240 cracking. Thought to myself how bad that must have sucked.

Well I have moved a big tank twice! My 240g into the house and out when I had the accident. After having this tank built on-site I would not have it any other way. It is much easier carrying large glass panes into the house then it is lifting a 700 lbs glass tank!

If you can source a good builder in your area I would have it built on-site.

No I never silicone the starboard in. I wanted to be able to remove it at a later date if I wanted without having to cut it out and risk hacking up the bottom silicone on the tank:D

I bought this stuff locally. Placed called GE Polmershapes they carry anything plastic. Just ask for HDPE starboard is just a brand name.

I had to buy a whole 96" X 48" sheet @ $120CDN not a bad price and I have allot left over that I have already used on other projects.

I don't think much of any will get under the board. I notice that debris collect on the sides in between the board and the glass. Makes for easy removal. I don't see a problem in using silicone on the board. Just does not seem worth the effort to me:)

Some large Angels for sure top the list. This will be done down the road 6 months or so till the water ages a bit. Angels like mature tanks 6 months seems to be the min before adding Angels. I still have a large clown trigger that was in my old tank it is at the LFS still. Not sure if I'm going to add him to this tank or not? He is very docile. But the risk is still there that he may snap one day.

I'm running my hammerhead and 4-way now on a timer with my lights. They will run 8 hours a day. I still have enough flow in the tank during the night with the 2 pens run off the Gen-X PCX 55HP and my return Gen-X 18000 pump. My skimmer is really pulling out some heavy gunk now. I never got a surge in Ammonia in the tank I guess cause I used nice large LR that was cured for a long time at my LFS. Diatoms are present on the starboard snails are working on it.

I went with the timer idea to save a bit on energy. The Hammerhead is rated @ 3.89Amps 4-way 17W will save a bit here only running 8hrs a day. Plus without the hammerhead and 4-way running at night should give a calmer effect like in the Ocean at night.

I have 2 outlets with 45's pointing down on the right of the tank. The one in the middle covers the center of the tank. The last outlet is on the left end with a 45 down. My return outlet is also on this side with a 90 blowing across the top of the water.

Yes the top will be boxed in with green board. I will have a few doors to access the tank.

I finished installing my CoralVue ballasts and pendents. I'm very happy with the color of these bulbs. Very bright crisp white with a little hint of blue. For the most part I will be running the MH for viewing only. Will be using my 4 VHO URI Atinics for dawn and dusk effect. Looks like I will have to wait till I get back into town again to pick up the big Sohal.

Here is a few more pictures of what the tank looks like with the new lighting.

It was so easy to aquascape with this rock. Unlike using Fiji rock which is round. The clown I had in my 240g for 8 months he is very docile.

Bit of an update. We were unsuccessful in trying to catch the big Sohal:( Tried for an hour with 3 nets. He is to large to even fit in the biggest net! Owner is going to try and egg crate off part of the tank in hopes in getting him. Tank is looking good all water parms are bang on! I did get a new fish yesterday it's a French Angel about 6". My LFS has had this guy in for around 2 months and he eats like a champ. I did some major cleaning to the tank when I got back into town. I used a turkey baster and blew off all the rocks. Wow did allot of gunk come out. Did a 20g siphon- water change off the bottom to remove the detritus.

My Ro unit while I was gone plugged up. My membrane was clogged and I had a bad carbon cartridge. Jayson at my LFS store was nice enough to come down and fix the problem while I was away:) My girlfriend had to buy some 5 gal jugs of Ro water from the store for a few days. She was not happy:rolleyes:

Here is a few new pics of the French and the tank.

I think just the bottom is (maybe 3/4) the sides are Starphire so they must be 1/2 inch. I believe he has 4 6 inch wide braces on the top, two on the ends and two in the middle.

Thanks, I will try and get some shots of the sump and all the pumps in the basement. I picked up a very large adult queen Angel yesterday. It is one of the nicest Queens I have seen. It is dinner plate size:eek1: I was surprised when I introduced it to the tank that there was no aggression from my French angel. Must be the size difference:D I also bought a very large sponge for my angels to feed on. They have yet to sample any of it:rolleyes: My trigger however did nip at it once but has not bothered it since.

I added a leather coral 2 weeks ago. It is doing very well no one was picked at it Added some mushrooms and a frog spawn coral. I thought my angels would have gone for the fleshy frog spawn. To my surprise not even a nip from any of them My 4 cleaner shrimps are doing well. My trigger went right to them for a cleaning as soon as I put them in the tank. I consider myself very lucky with the mix I have in the tank so far. Just goes to show you nothing is text book. Trying to bend the rules as much as possible:)

I did loose my large Carpet my large French angel would pick at the center of it. When I returned back from out of town it was missing. No sign of it anywhere! I added a 250mg Ozone generator on the tank. It has made a big difference on my skimming and water clarity. I now run Ozone and UV on the tank.

Dont get me wrong, its a beautiful setup, and yes, I am jealous. But, no matter what size tank you have, at what point does your tank become overcrowded?

It seems that the tank size will have to be doubled or tripled in the future in order to continue enjoying those beautiful fish if there is a continuation of adding fish that can reach over 10-12 inches at maturity. Again... just another opinion, and you know what they say, so if you are offended just ignore me. ;)

stevebydac

How are the inverts doing with the light? If I'm reading this correctly you have less than 2 watts per gallon. I'm contemplating the same type of setup and haven't decided on lights yet.

Piece of friendly advice: ease up on the livestock. You may have a quick pop of hair algae with the number of animals and frequent feedings. Been there, done that myself. Hate to see it happen to you.

Looks fantastic!!! Keep up the pics!

Oh and why would that be? IYO of course:)

Well, since you asked....

Just a few pages back, and IMO of course, you had one of the most envious tanks I have ever seen on RC. Beautiful rock setup, excellent size tank, BB, filtration setup, beautful fish...but you decided to add fish that are for the most part, not reef safe. You added soft corals. More angels that are risky with corals. One beautiful angel dies. You add more fish and one more large angel and a dwarf from what I see. You add clown, shrimp (trigger food) and chromis. Did I forget any? You're thinking about SPS and adding another large angel. Which fish is the dominant one in your tank? Of these which are reef safe? Which ones are running all the time? How do you feed? Now for the most obvious part of which I am surprised NO ONE has addressed...at what point is a 300gal not big enough?

So for those that think I am jealous..yes you are right. IMO you had one of the most beautiful FOWLR tanks I have ever seen...but you are throwing it all away. Your right to do so no doubt but one that saddens me nonetheless. I meant nothing derogatory by my thumbs down only that I disapprove of the path you've taken.

stevebydac,

Inverts are doing fine with the lights I have. 3 250w 14l CV MH plus the 660W actinic.

As for the adding of live stock I have not added to much to fast the tank is very stable. I never had hair algae and I never will in this tank UV Ozone very high flow turn over huge skimmer.

Well first off every fish and tank is different. You can not go by the book when mixing livestock. With my Trigger he is docile, he never picks on my snails or my 4 cleaner shrimp. Now if you look at a book it says they are not reef safe. You have to keep your livestock well feed. If my Angels and trigger were not eating enough of the right foods maybe they would nip eat the corals. But this is not the case in my tank! So what it comes down to is every specimen and tank is different. Many people may not agree in what I'm doing with my setup and that is fine they can have their opinions. As long as the fish and corals are healthy water quality is excellent I see no problem at all.

I am going to go on record as saying that your trigger will turn to the darkside at some time.

Somewhere around episode 3.

not all clown triggers will "freak out" haha.. yeah there have been reports they they just eat everything one day. but im sure there are people who have had them for years without a problem.

zemuron114,

But people love to go by what they read in books! People are like the media. Always focusing on the negative stories not the good.

Yes true they are. But every fish will act different trait wise is my point!

Yes and many of these books are of old thought. Over the years, techniques, ideas, science, and technology have changed drastically. Many years ago it was unheard of to breed any marine life in a home aquaria. Now, people do this daily with clown fish, cardinals, blennys etc etc.
If you look at Drs Foster & Smith's Live Aquaria website, they recommend tanks for many of their fish that they are selling that, for the most part, are too small. Now this is a reputable source, yet has information on the page that many would consider wrong.

I have no problems with HDs set up or additions. In fact, I follow the same methods and ideas he has. As stated though, these are just our opinions, but then again, maybe HD and I should write a book too  ;)

Best of luck to all and to HD, I can't wait to see that beauty in the tank. keep us posted!

HD,

There is a big difference between an unorthodox approach to something and a haphazard one. While I wish you continued success and in truth even should you kill every creature in your tank that is but a small fraction of the hobby...it is that I find your tank to be darkly fascinating and possibly inspirational to countless other reefers who may not experience your success that warrants my concern. For this matter, I ask that you continue to post no matter the outcome.

How is the lobophylia doing?? I find that most non-reef safe fish will begin their nipping on fluffier corals like that or brains.

Doing fine. Great grow since I purchased it. A very nice green color

just to go on record as well I would like to say that I applaud you for keeping him as well as the other timebomb(the undulate) in your tank. Nobody knows what will happen until they try something like that. In the end its your dough and your perogitive ;)

I would suggest documenting the behavior of the fish so it contributes to the greater knowlege of this hobby.

Thread after thread I see bickering and I can't stand it, how many moms do we have on this site. GIve opinions when they are asked.

I really think you should add sand to the tank, it would look twice as nice and help with the bioload, unless of course you are going to turn it into a SPS tank.

He did, too much flow, it all got swept away!;)

Seriously if he did it wouldn't stay put.

IMO it adds to your overall bio-load of your tank. With BB and high flow it gets everything out and into the sump so the skimmer can pull it out fast.

True sand would not stay put in my tank period.
