Jaffa, reefs down in the red sea are amazing. Been diving around the area for the past nine years... pity can't find zoanthids though, pretty ****ed about that. Great thing about Saudi Arabia is that the majority of the coast is still untouched.

Have no idea never been diving there... planning on taking a trip down to the maldives around christmas time. That promises for some excellent encounters and a couple of nice shots.
In the meantime another dive shot, I liked the contrast between the different fish.

Marc - I love the coral 'nipples'.
This thread is really cool, makes me want to buy a new camera, maybe thats what this month's bonus will do, I can get a nice Canon EOS 20D for a heck of a deal.
Here is one from tonight:

Listen I've been here for ever it seems and there is nothing that bad going on. Sure sometimes you get nasty comments and a little violence from the locals but rarely, overall it's not that bad. And being told your a sinner by the religious police is always entertaining.
And the scenery is beautiful as you can see, not!

I thought you might find this interesting, I spotted this with a Mesoscope in a lfs and returned the next day to take some photos. Do you think that these hydroids would stop an Acro from opening fully as the polyps in the immediate vicinity are closed?

Can you explain a mesoscope? I'm hearing about them more and more (too lazy to do a google search right now (should be working!)) I returnd most of my sps, my tank isn't ready. One of the few I have left is totally infested with these, and I really think they were there when I bought it. It is expensive, you think they'd take it back based on that?

melev, I'm not sure of the hydroid ID. The one in the picture is approximately 1/8" long. There where several on the Acro tip pictured with one directly above the closed polyp which doesn't show in this image.

The Mesoscope is basically a microscope that temporarily fastens to the outside of the tank, allowing non-invasive observation of the life within a reef system. If you search this forum you will find several references to the Mesoscope or click on my red house to visit our website.

I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same creature Barry. Dr Ron has some information about Digitate hydroids on his site. I didn't see the first tinier one, but the other one is pretty much an exact match. They can get quite a bit longer, typically at night when the lights are out.

I wonder if there is a symbiotic relationship between the Acro & Hydroids/Hydrozoan Polyps as they appeared to living within the coral/polyp. Could the coral be using the hydroids as a defence mechanism?

I'm finally getting some sweet shots with the digicam. Nikon Coolpix 5000.
The only problem is, while my tank shots are getting better, I'm still horrible at taking shots of other things, and the wife really wants some pics of our puppies that are not blurred!

Hi DEQbob,
No Macro, just a camera adapter direct to the Mesoscope.

Barry, I was just reading about the Mesoscope. Does it have the ability to adjust the aperture to control depth-of-field? Or can you use the camera's aperature control?

DEQbob, The Mesoscope comes with a mechanical aperture that is interchangeable between both optical systems, or can be removed for very low light levels. The optical design has been developed to provide maximum depth of field. What type of camera do you have?

Barry, have an Olympus Camedia and a Nikon D70.

DEQbob, How do you find the depth of field of these cameras/lenses.
BeakerBob
07/31/2005, 03:04 PM
Barry, I use a 90 macro lens on the Nikon in manual mode to stop down to f/22. You can use the newer autofocus lenses and go aperture priority or in the close-up programmed mode to get greater depth-of-field (it increases the aperture and slows down the shutter speed).

Barry, not sure what you mean by "DEQbob, what do you to observe the life within your system.".
I use the macro lens on the camera for macro closeups (amazing what you can see whent he pics are blown up on the computer screen), a linen tester for just looking around at the general lifeforms near the front of the tank, a stereo microscope and an oil immersion microscope for really, really small objects.

It is, and I've had that happen before. Duct tape was my remedy. ;)
BeakerBob
08/03/2005, 07:54 PM
Yup, it was a large bristleworm. I was moving a rock around and picked up one. I could feel a stinging sensation, but a lot of rocks have tiny calciferous growths under them so I thought that was the problem. When it continued, I turned the rock over and saw that I had trapped a bristleworm between the rock and my finger. I had the camera there so I took a picture for posting.
I didn't think of duct tape, but I scraped it off with a sharp knife blade. Finger is still sensitive and the skin on the tip tip blistered off.

No, the LFS I shop at had babies and called me up excitedly to find out more. If you want to see all my images of the seahorses, they are in this directory. I know it isn't as nice to click and view one at a time, but they were posted on the DFWMAS forum only.

If your talking about my picture that is how they look under my T5 lights. I had to take it in raw mode and adjust it to get it to look the same, everything else came out too blue. They are purple with yellow/green skirts-or whatever they are called.
