I have been looking for this thread. Here is my updated tank room. It used to have a 200 gallon tank in it. Then the bottom broke and fell out. Now I have a 90 gallon tank and new carpet throughout my entire house.

Wow Pikey!! That's a real bummer about losing a 200 gallon tank. You must have lost a lot of stuff. Were you home at the time? How did it break? I am glad to see you have recovered though. Keep the faith!

My wife and I were at work when it happened. By the time I got home, everything was pretty dry (except the carpet). The bottom glass broke and then proceeded to fall out. I lost almost everything, but I had a few corals, and clams survive.

Way back when this thread started I posted room pics and it was pretty much just 2x4 construction. I can finally post some updated pictures. The room still has some work to do such as covering the lolly columns and the tank opening needs to be trimmed and an access door added.
I started out with just four concrete slab walls for a basement.

Twin sliding glass doors out to a padio. The padio is about 20 feet from a lake. So keeps people in their boats from looking in at my fish.

Once we put the tank in the family room, we had to redecorate to coordinate the room with the tank. :) We went with a nautical theme. We are not quite finished but this gives a good representation of what it looks like.

FuriaReef, would that be Cal Poly by any chance? I'm hoping to go there next fall. By the way, is that school housing? My old school required us to turn off all power during winter breaks and spring breaks...which of course, would not allow for a tank. I would love to continue in the hobby while I'm in school, but the living arrangements of a student makes it quite difficult.

Finding Nemo, I am also a fan of plants in a room. I have been thinking of a way to do my basement with wall planters around the room that are tied into my main system with Mangroves in them, but in a way that you would never notice that they are part of the system...

Yep, I went from a 90 to a 220. Things went well with the transfer and now I use my 90 for the sump. I've also been working on a website with the steps of the upgrade (little easier to go through than the reefcentral thread.

SV. You should get some pretty palms for both sides of the tank and then add a few small potted plants right by them to even them out.
That would be so beautiful, or add a table the lenght of the tank but coffee table hight and put some plants on that with some shells.
Add a pretty rug in front of that and walla, more beautiful then it is allready.
I have plants by my tank, will take some new pics and post them now, makes a big difference to the room.

RevHtree...well the tank has been up for a little longer than 2 years. Alot of the corals came from my old 180. I stick with all softies now. Went the SPS route but they are too touchy for my taste...even though they really are colorful. I have gotten into anthias and have roughly 60 fish in the system. The filter room, as I mentioned, is in the basement. The main sump holds about 50 gallons of water and I run a Deltec AP 902 skimmer along with a phosphate reactor to control the phosphate levels from the fish and feeding. A Korallin 3002 calcium reactor tries to keep up with the demands of the tank but I often have to add Cal Chloride and Mag Chloride to keep levels close. A refugium was added a few months back and holds about 35-40 gallons of water. 2-400 watt halides plus 4-VHO's consist of tyhe lighting system. Overall I really have enjoyed this project although the tank could use even more circulation (closed loop would be nice) and of course it could be bigger. Happy none the less with the final outcome. A few more pics of the system.

Sixxer...sump measures 48"L x 24"W x 18"H and it runs about 1/3 deep with water. The main pump is a Dolphin 4700. I have about 12' of head distance to the upstairs. The pump is awesome and has been great! The grey bands (clips) came from aquatic ecosystems. They work very well and are nice for if you ever need to undo the pipes they just unclip. They come in different sizes. They are on this page http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/listings.categories/ssid/316

Yeah, it is a conversation piece. It was funny, when we first were building the house, people would tour the house as kind of a model. Getting ideas ect for their own homes. The house got nicknamed the "fish house" in the area for most people hadn't seen anything quite like it. I still laugh about it.
Hey Sixxer...I've followed alot of your post from years back. How's your tank doing?

Finding Nemo I don't really like questions like this for I don't really know alot about your system, water quality, maintenance schedule, your likes and dislikes of fish ect, ect, ect. There is more to adding a bunch of fish to any system and each system has it's own strengths and weakness's. In honesty I really don't recommend overloading a system like I have. Too many issues to worry about. As you mentioned damsels and clowns really don't coincide together in groups the best in home aquaria unless you have a very large system. One thing I have found is that adding more load to any tank requires more time, more effort and more money.

So will stick with what I have, and your right, depends on allot of different things.
But I sure would love to the have life in my tank that you have in yours, it actually looks like you are snorkling just under the oceans waves and looking down at a reaf.
Just amazing.

Hey Tom what are the total specs on your system? I too have a softie tank granted it's in the vicinity of about 1/7th your tank and well just not nearly as cool either ;)
- 270 REEF
- Deltec 902 SKIMMER
- CHILLER + (Heater?) + 2-way Ranco (What's you avg temp?)
- HALIDES 2-400 watt halides (What kind and color temp? Hours?)
- VHO'S 4-VHO's (Brand and wattage? Hours?)
- SUMP -> Deltec Skimmer, Korallin 3002 calcium reactor, Aqua Doser, (Is that a Kalk Reactor I see or a the Phosphate Reactor you mentioned?), (Return pump?)
- Refugium 35g-40g (What do you keep in there?)
- What are your typical routines - (Water change schedule and gallonage?, How much chloride do you dose on avg?)
Hmm... if you get the sense that I am using a rubber glove... that would be my bad.. as you can tell it's rare to see such a fantastic and large soft coral dominated tank. Any chance you'll build a website? :D

Here's a picture (taken a year ago in two days) of my tank room. I have an Entertainment Center around the TV now. I'll try to take some updated pictures. :)
The return pumps, chiller, and top of reservoir are all plumbed to a lean-to shed on the other side of the wall/window.

Hey Chris,
Your stand looks great. If you made it yourself can you tell me the make and model of that stain? I am refinishing the stand for my 135 and I love that color.
Thanks,

RevHTree...I always invite people over when they want to take a look. If your in the Omaha area give me a call and we can hook up. No problem!
Electrobes...WOW that's alot of info you want but let's see if I can get you some more.
Chiller is a 1/2 HP and keeps the temp between 77-79 degrees, I never have had a heater on the system...never had needed one.
Lighting is 2-400watt 10K Ushio bulbs run about 9 hours a day supplemented with 4-60" URI actinics run 10 hours a day starting 30 mins b/4 and after the halides start/stop.
The sump has a phosphate reactor in it and no kalkreactor. But that might be an option for my CA reactor (Korallin 3002) doesn't seem to be cutting it with my calcium and magnesium demands. I have looked into other options for a larger reactor. People always speak of the demands of a sps tank, but I think my large leathers could give them a run for their money.
Refugium has been set up for a couple months now and has a 1" sand bed with 3 types of caulerpa.
As far as additives it really depends on test results on wether I add CA chloride and mag chloride, but it is not unusual to be adding both numerous times per day just to keep up with the demand!
I've never thought of a website but maybe someday.

I'm sure it's in Cali. I would say it is all fake coral, and the owners would have no clue how to do water change on their own. Can you imagine the maintenance bill?

I wonder if Kent makes those Pro scraper long enough to reach the bottom? Maintenance would be astronomical if it is full blown reef but FO would still be costly but not much. It looks like it is placed in a hotel or something. But if that monster is in residential...I wonder what the owner do for a living??? Deuce Bigalow perhaps ??? lol...

reefinmike,
looks good..btw, how's do you deal with the noise issue..if any since, the tank located in the bedroom?
reefinmike
05/30/2006, 11:46 AM
it is nothing compared to what i used to deal with. i used to have my 125 fw with a rubbermaid sump, the water went through a bucket full of bioballs(noisy) and i had my 29 as my only reef at the time and i had the lamp on the fuge all day. i sleep through anything. at night my 125 is silent. the only noise in my room is a faint water noise from my 29g's overflows which im going to be working on once school is out(friday :) ) my room used to be a sauna but now i have glass tops on my 125 so it keeps the room dry. the tank stays 78.9 at night and 79.5 during the day.
