Any of a number of species of vascular plants adapted to living underwater in marine conditions. The most common people run across in the shops, if its true seagrass, tends to be manatee grass (Syringodium filiforme) and turtle grass (Thalassia sp.). I'm not sure what you may be seeing in the shops in Canada. The ones for the hobby tend to come from tropical zones - especially the Caribbean, but seagrasses are a major part of the marine subtidal zones worldwide. You can try my website (hit the red house) for some pics of seagrass and a page full of links to websites with info on seagrass.

There is a macroalgae that attaches itself to rocks and grows in an upright habit that resembles seagrass, the 'leaves' are long and grow in thick clumps. Seems an ID is uncertain but looks to be Chaetomorpha genus, possibly antennina or aerea (I think its "aerea" at least).
