I love the speckled look. I'm seeing more and more of them (not in that color though). Looks like someone was painting their zoas and got a little bit of overspray;).

********** I've had them for years. Just took someone with a decent camera to get them on film. They are often called Ruby Reds and they are pretty darn hard to find. Most anyone that has them, that I know of, got them from me, either directly or indirectly.

Vital, I hate to talk price, as I dislike the LE $$$ type thing, but yes they always sell locally, as fast as they grow. They do fetch a nice trade once in a while too. I've heard that Tropoasis sells them for $20 a polyp or so. Of course I know where to get them for much less. I'd rather talk about the beauty of the sparkles and the richness of the Red:D

TimB what lighting and flow do you have them under. I keep mine low on the bottom under 14ks. They are in heavy flow because most of my tank is SPS.

They look awesome. Was the first picture at the top you post under a 14k DE as well. What bulb are you using and are you using supplmental lighting.

poon415
05/14/2005, 04:45 PM
The first two pictures are under 14k 250w Phoenix bulbs only. The third slightly fuzzy picture is 150w 14k Aquaconnect with power compact actinics.

Tim nice photo. Pondfrog if you get a chance post a picture of yours. I've seen your other photos and you have a special gift at taking clear pictures of the zoas. Anybody else out there got the Rubys? Mine keep best low under MH 250w, they tend to lighten a little under too intense of lighting.

Here's a pic of some I got a while back from a fellow RCer. Don't remember who but he lives up closer to me, north of LA. It took mine a while to start growing but they are doing better now that I've increased my lighting. I just bought a 175 MH setup that I'm going to be putting on the tank and getting rid of the PC's other than the atinic. Pic is with 110 W of 10K and 110 W of atinic PC's.

It always seems that all the odd/unique zoo frags are in the Western United States. Its not enough that all you Californians have access to the ocean, gorgeous weather and the Rocky Mountains but you have to have all the cool corals too. I guess the your threat of mud slides and earthquakes make me feel a little better.;)

But seriously those ruby reds are unbelievable does anyone in the mid west have any?

Chris

synergy,

I've sent dozens of frags out to people all over the states, so they are out there. Not just on the West coast. It's if people want to frag them out.:mixed: You just got to know the right person to contact :love2:

how fast do they grow?

poon415
07/12/2005, 11:16 PM
In my experience these are the slowest growing zoanthids I have ever had. Kept under low light, high light, three different tanks with little flow to high flow. Always a slow grower.

Blown63 sure we can see if they are the same or different whenever it works out for you.

update. took these pics last night. I had them on the sand bed and they outgrew the rock they were on fast. I set them higher in the tank on a big piece of live rock so they can grow on it. Hopefully they get a grip on the rock fast. =P

When I get the chance, I'll try and get a better pic of mine with my new lights. As for growth, they were reall slow at growing for the first year I had them. They have since started to grow a bit faster. Since I changed over to MH lights, I've noticed that they don't extend up from the rock near as much as they used to. Keep the thread going.

PaulB, I'll PM you next week when I get back home.

I have two 400w radiums on a HQI ballast. The lights are only a few months old. These are placed all the way to the side of the tank about 6 or 8 inches from the bottom.

Do you guys target feed them? If so, what do you feed?

I think Tongs in HB has a large rock of these for $99 but I’m not very sure. I dropped by last night and was looking at it for 45min straight but decided to pass because that place blast there coral with so much actinic it’s hard to tell what’s what. I did buy a ric from them and after I took it home and put it under 14k lighting it turned out to be a completely diff color. But it’s still a decent piece for the price I paid so I’m still happy with it.

BlueStag

Kevin good thing you passed. I went to Tongs and saw the rock and they aren't the same zo's. The ones at tongs have lots of brown in them and don't look the same. You'd be bummed I think if you bought that rock.
