Hey there,

Lets see some pics of everyone's propagation tanks/systems!

I'll get pics of mine soon, I still need to get my light but everything is in another tank ready to go. Should have light tomorow. For now here are my stats:

15g AGA - 24"L x 12"W x 12"H
Aquaclear 50(200) W/surface skimmer
Powersweep 212
Seachem Seagel(Activated carbon and phosphorous remover)
150W DE Ushio 20K
1/2" LS
No Idea on LR amount, will be around 10lb though

12 Blue-leg Hermits
4 Nassarius Snails
4 Trochus Snails
10 Cerith snails
1 Sally Lightfoot possibly, depending on algae
(I do NOT want algae in this tank! Lol)
Sixline Wrasse, Might throw in in the future, but thats why LR amount is low because I wont have any bioload really, and six-line wont be much, and cleanup crew and filtration is good

-Will have about 16-20 types of zoos
-A few SPS(Caps, Birdsnest, Acros, maybe others)
-A couple Ric colors
-Thin-barred Xenia
-GSP
-Might add more as I get more $$$ but thats it for now

I'll have pics up by end of the week.

Lets see everyone's tanks!

Nice Setup Rob!

Yeah, 15g is kind of small but I cant really afford much right now(should have gone 20L though) and the 33g is my moms(I 'gave' it to her since I didnt want to pay for the MH and stuff lol).

Next setup I make is going to be a propagation rack with seperate systems for Zoos, Softies, LPS, SPS(all seperate systems, not plummed together).

Rick: I look forward to seeing your pics!

Anyone else got pics?

It's really not much to look at, but it does it's job very well..the tank is 30"l x 12"w x 6" h. right now a I have several frags of xenia growing out. Lighting consists of a Hamilton Tech 2x55 10k-03 actinic PC's. this is a real nice setup for someone that has limited space along with a small budget...:)

Rick,

How sturdy are the troughs, especially near the middle? How are they supported? It looks like you have them on a wood stand.

Have you thought about insulating the sides and bottom?

Looks great!

You may end up burning your frags/corals even if they are on the bottom. Best to use layers of plastic window screen between the light and the tank and remove a few layers over a two to three week period.

alphaferret
05/16/2005, 05:13 PM
right now there are none- but i see about he adjustment thru height or screening- does mh need a glass between it and tank

Are you using SE or DE bulbs?

Funky_Fish14
05/16/2005, 10:20 PM
I have a 400W halide over a 33g tank....12-13" from water's surface. You just have to be careful how hight its mounted.....I get some zoo bleaching if they are not on the sides or bottom. I would suggest mounting it about 11-14" from the surface if you have SPS and LPS, and 13-16" if you are planning on softies.(all this regardless of whether the bulb is SE or DE)

Here is one of my setups. SPS and LPS in the frag tank and softies in the sump...works out pretty good!

http://www.reefobsession.com/images/misc 031.jpg

Lighting is 2x 250w 14k DE HQI ReefStars from Hamilton Lighting.
Sump is a portable KOI pond from Aquatic Eco
Skimmer is HVS ReefDevil
150lbs of LR in a tub in the sump

2 - 1" standpipes for drain
Mag 12 return
2x Tunze 6060 Streams

Freed
05/17/2005, 09:22 AM
Shouldn't need any glass between then, but only if you don't do a lot of splashing. DE bulbs require UV lens to keep from literally burning your livestock to death from UV radiation.

alphaferret
05/17/2005, 11:17 AM
ok i heard that u needed a glass for some reason- uv !

Funky_Fish14
05/18/2005, 06:20 PM
Yes, you do need that on DE bulbs because double-ended bulbs have only the actual part that emits the light while SE bulbs have a protective glass around it that also blocks UV.

AHH Cyano in my prop tank! Lol. Im going out right now to buy a maxi-jet to make a DYI skimmer lol.

PVC couplings. They are hard to see because they have coralline on them like the bottom. The eggcrate is changed out every so often because I get too much unintentional growth on it.

FishFreak20
05/22/2005, 08:43 PM
What is a PVC coupling? I have mine held up by pieces of PVS that I cut to the right length and then silicone it to the egg crating. How do you glue it?

john76
05/23/2005, 11:21 AM
37gallon half frag tank and half display.... it's the same footprint as a 20long but is a lot higher. The bottom is eggcrate and filled with zoo frags. The way the rockwork is set up allows for a lot of space on the bottom to grow out zoo's.

I had a 20long on this stand but got sick of looking at just frags in the tank. So I bought the taller tank.

The main rock structure is gonna end up being covered in zoos and monti's.

OK here is mine. It is connected in line with the main system, the tank is an Eurobraced ******* 48x24x16 on a ******* Acrylic Stand. It is lighted by two 250MH AB SE 14K bulbs on IceCap electronic Ballasts and two 55W T-5 Actinics. Lighting is controlled by the Neptune and is on at night oposite to the main tank photoperiod.
Barebottom with the eggcrate in two levels for different light penetration supported with 1" dia PVC lenghts that have four cuts on top at 90 degrees (dremel) where the crate get's inserted.
Recirculation is provided by two Magdrives (12 and 18 in series) Overflow and returns in center back. Total flow around 1900 gph with additional powerheads inside the tank.
The cleaning crew (besides my elbow grease) is just a bunch of Astreas and Ceriths plus one Mex Turbo.
Trying to grow basically rare or uncommon sps corals, examp. ORA torts, pink and blue table, lokais, red digitatas, red capricornis, green/red sarmentosa, neon confusa, red millie, blue stagehorns, purple buttlebrush echinatas and such.

\This was my old propagation system before I moved from the eastern seabord to the land of no basements. Man, not having a basement really cramps my reefing style!!!!

THis is an EASY set up and doesn't take too much time to set up. In the big picture it is relatively cheap.

3 rubbermaid containers, PVC, 3 bulkheads, cinderblock and a pump.

Unfortunaltey, I sold all of it to a guy before the move, b/c I would have had no place to put it:( I will be placing a propagation tank off of my exhisting system.

One problem with hosting pics on a private ISP occurs if your pic (or thread) is popular. A large number of viewers can use up your ISP bandwidth allowance. FWIW

ok it worked.
I just drained a 180 gallon tank into the vat with the 1000 watt 20k over it I have to drill it so I can connect them.
The 1000 watt bulb is about 2 years old but will do till I get some new ones ordered and finish the system.
I also just set up the other 300 gallon with fresh salt a week ago.
I still have to get more salt and another 300 gallon vat but they were out of stock on the vats, I got the last one.I may call around and try to find another today.
Anyway the ASM G6 in the other vat will be removed when I get a large external ETS.
All 3 300 gallon vats will have 1000 watt 20ks to supplement the sun when needed.
I'll post a better pic when its all complete.
This is set up in a 16x20 attached greenhouse so alot of the time I dont even need the halides.
I may just connect 2 of the 300 gallons to the 180 glass tank and leave the 3rd 300 Rubbermaid as a stand alone QT/prop system just incase.

I agree with Funky_Fish14, you would go with 3x 400w and it would prob work just as well and only end up using a little over 1/3 of the watts...

Shawn I feel comfortable saying that I considered most obsticles.
I have been already runing 2 1000 watters 12 hrs a day anyway.

these 3 will only run 5-6 hrs a day when needed....somtimes weeks/months will go buy when they are not even needed, so my electric bill should be less than it has been. When they are run it will be from 6am-11am when its cool...there is a exhaust fan for heat..but if needed I will get air cooled hoods.

I like the spread of the 1000 watter over the 300 Rubbermaids, also I only need one reflector and cord like this.

I have a 180 gallon glass tank that will have a 400 watt 20k(12hrs per day) on a hydroponic light mover as well. This is also gonna connect to the system.

BTw I did consider a 400 watt Iwasaki 65k instead of 1000 watters...But since I already have 2 1000 watters it was a no brainer to me.I may try a 400 Saki over one and see how it spreads as well.

http://www.tropicalmarineimports.com//images/tank.jpg

here is the 180 gallon tank.I have the light mover and will install it over the tank today but I have to order the 400 watt halide.I will order it tomorrow from Hellolights.I'll get the ARO retro kit and a XM 20k 400 bulb.

Also got to order a Sequence or Amp Master.I figure I'll Tee off the pump to the tank and one of the 300 vats from a 300.The 3rd 300 will be a stand alone system with a 50 gallon shallow Rubbermaid with a DSB for clams connected to it.I also already have a 175 watt set up for the 50 gallon clam vat as well.

I got a couple more buckets of salt last night and started thinking I should try to use them also, for surgers.

I think I'll have 6 buckets left when I am through.

I finally got a pic of my tank. In the middle are a bunch of zoo frags, on the right are my zoo/paly colonies and pieces that im waiting to grow into colonies. The left there is some thin-barred xenia, some sps(birdsnest and monti caps), and a small frag of GSP you probably cant see. All I have in there is a huge turbo snail, a coupe ceriths, and a couple blue-leg hermits. Lots of copepods to for the amount of rock....and they are BIG, lol.

Chris, I love my rubbermaid tank. It's only about 15 inches deep (I think) and it's really strong. I think I paid about 70 for it and it's a 50 gallon. The only down side to the setup was my skimmer would not go over the side. I fixed that by having a maxijet feed a 5 gallon home depot bucket. I'll post pics later tonight....

Thanks!! I used a crap load of glue to make sure it didn't leak. Then I hung the maxijet that feeds it upside down to guarentee that in the event of a leak, the water would stop feeding to the bucket and the pump would die. Thanx! The glass tank is a 72x36x12 (about 150 gallon) and the "sump" is a portable koi pond that holds about 300 gallons (if I remember right) and is full of softies and leathers...

The one in the far back corner is a 55 gallon suspended growout tank ala Anthony Calfo that just went up last week with three sides and the bottom painted white. We'll see how it does.

Thanx Joekr, that is built with square tube frame and legs, very sturdy. I had it full (freshwater) while testing it, the liner bellows a bit from the water but still very sturdy.

I got two of them on close out from Aquatic-EcoSystems last year at 70.00 a piece. They were regularly 160 or something like that. Should have picked up more cause now I cannot find them. At 16" deep they are great frag tanks in them selves and very easy to light and plumb. It has a drain that a 3/4 bulkhead fits real snug.

I like the container a lot, mainly because of the durability, the depth and the price. The things I don't care for are the view from the top and the need to plumb the skimmer elsewhere.

I bought the company (which included the website) off ebay. I had been a long time customer of Rick's (previous owner) and had been in negotiations with him prior to it going up on eaby. We worked out a deal for all the livestock and parent colonies and he shipped them all to me here in Charlotte. The equipment and stuff I had already or purchased to house the livestock.

Couple of questions. How much flow are you guys pumping through these tanks? I'm thinking about running a closed loop on a 20 long with a Mag 5 (too much?). If the tank is not plumbed into a system, what do you need to add for filtration?

Funky_Fish14
07/18/2005, 04:10 PM
Sweet setup Chin!

Headonkey, a mag 3 would do in a 20L, for filtration I would add on an aquaclear or similar HOB filter with some foam and carbon or phosphate remover or whatever you want. I'd throw a few pieces of live rock and some cheato under the coral rack/shelf.

I'd probably throw a 175 or 250W 14K over a 20L, assuming your growing a mix of sps/lps/softies.

Chris

headonkey
07/18/2005, 07:56 PM
I have an extra Mag 5 lying around so thats why I was going to use it. Maybe I could pick up a used mag 3 for cheap. we're going to use a 175w MH and not sure what color bulb. The HOB with cheato and LR sounds good to me.

I would think a mag5 would work in a 20L, just make sure you disperse the flow a little so you don't have a strong jet of water hitting the corals directly. I did a DIY spraybar with a mag7 and the flow out of each nozzle/hole wasn't hard enough to hurt anything in my 20L.

B.

Funky_Fish14
07/19/2005, 12:31 PM
Im not saying not to use a mag 5, I was just saying a mag 3 would do the trick, I didnt know he had one (a mag 5) laying around.

Chris

headonkey
07/19/2005, 02:54 PM
So Mag 5 it is. I think I'll direct the flow at the LR that I'll have under the eggcrate so it doesn't blast the corals. I'll try to draw up something and post it.

Also, where do you guys buy Loc-line and how much $$$?

Funky_Fish14
07/20/2005, 09:27 AM
Im in Canada but LFS has it mind you they are rip-off LFS and its cheaper to order online.

You could divert some of the current to the water surface and some to under the rack and if you divert enough, some at the corals

Well, mine is by no means a match for some of your setups - actually some of them are larger than some aquaculture centers I have seen, so hmm....

Anyways, the low down. 40gal tank (36x12x22). Skilter 400 (its better than nothing), two powerheads, magnum 350 canister filter, and Coralife Lunar Aqualight 2x 96W PC w/ moonlights. 20lbs of sand, soon to be 30lbs of live rock.

All of the equipment is from our reef setup that got upgraded to a 150, so we had this just sitting around wasting away, and decided, what the heck, instead of using the fuge on our 150 for propogating corals (mind you, we can only get around 20 frags down there before its going to be too crowded to add some macros and live rock rubble. Its about a 20gal partition of a 55gal sump.

Oh yeah, I also have about 130 of the frag plugs I made. I figured out I can get around 350 of the plugs in here.

http://workshopwebs.com/pictures/fish/moms40/05August/fulltanksterile.JPG

http://workshopwebs.com/pictures/fish/moms40/05August/plugsonrack.JPG

Like I said, nothing spectacular. Due to the lighting frags are going to consist of mostly softies (zoas, leathers, xenia, gsp, yellow polyps, etc) and LPS (galaxea, candy cane, and hopefully the new acan colony).

Thanks. It was more of a comparison to others, but I love it. My mom is jumping for joy, though I fear she is vastly over estimating how much money we can make with this. Personally I'd be happy if we made enough to cover the higher electrical bill with the 150 in operation. Or some sweet corals or fish for it. Trading is always good too.

And yes, I am a big fan of the hand made frag plugs. The little nubs pop off with an old pair of wire cutters or pliers, and they glue easily onto another rock seamlessly melding into the rocks. Very nice. I also put a hole in it with a toothpick while it was drying for toothpicking softies to the rocks. Works like a charm.

hamburglar
08/03/2005, 07:45 AM
Good idea with the tooth pick hole. It's about time for me to make up another batch. I think I will try adding that feature.

In the past, I have stuck my thumb into the center of about 1/2 of my wet frag rocks, to make a little pocket for cuttings. That works good when you use fabrics to hold down cuttings.

As my South Down Sand stockpile is running out, I have also switched my mix to include more crushed oyster shell. I get it at a local feed store for about $10 per 50lbs. A little pricy, but it is only 1 mile from my house.

My current mix is 4 parts crushed oyster shell, 1 part South Down Sand, 1 part concrete. I'm still curing for 12 weeks which is probably overkill. The rocks have been very nice and chunky.

I filled a styrofoam container with sand.
Then wetted the sand.
After the sand was wet enough to form I pushed holes in the sand with a dow rod (make sure the dow rod can fit in an egg crate hole).
Then i poured my mixture into the hole and "split" some over for the mounting part.

GARF has some nice how-to guides at http://www.garf.org

When I make my frag rocks, I just mold them in my hand and lay them on a plywood sheet to dry. This gives them a rather flat bottom, but it does not bother me since my frag rocks are all placed in sand.

For larger round rocks you will need to place them in a mold of some sort. Damp sand or oyster shell can be used to form a mold.

Here is another little trick I have been working on to make very large complex rocks.... Get yourself some pvc pipe, like 2 inch to 5 inch...whatever you have for scrap. Cut several rings about 1/2 inch width. Make a creative mold in damp sand or oyster shell. Now add your concrete mixture to the mold. Make sure that the top of the concrete mix is semi flat....you are only making the bottom half of the finished rock in this stage. Now, while the concrete mix is still wet, place some of the rings half way into the mix. Make sure that half of each ring is submerged in concrete, and the other half is hanging out. let this rock harden for a couple of days. Now make another mold, add fresh concrete using the same dry mix as before (for the same color), plop the first rock on top of the next batch. Let this harden for a couple days. Now you have something cool hopefully :)

The rings are used to fuse the two rocks together. Make sure that you make enough dry mix for both batches the first time. This will help with color matching.

thanks rafael for posting my pics. will figure out later how, it's probably easy {but im old} you know old people @ computers.

I'm not shure what black foam you mean, the floor is covered in gray foam. I have all soft corals mostly ,dont care much for sps on a personal level. the greenhouse is still being finished. only built greenhouse 3-4 months ago before that I had that blue pool in my sunroom and ten coral tanks in house. still have 9 in house on a 100 gal sump in basement. will be moving a few to greenhouse soon minus lights.

I think he means the foam surrounding (or creating) the one tank.

Maybe it is just a plastic stone look.

loinphishy
08/04/2005, 06:29 PM
yep the one pool is real plastic alright used to be a koi pond in the foyer with real plastic waterfall {in the foyer} ya I know! It changed to salt and went into the sun in the sunroom along with ro units and trash cans and everything else fishy. there was no room for me. then the greenhouse to reclaim the sunroom. by the way real plastic pond to be replaced soon with 300 gallon stock tank.

Here are a pics of mine.

The electric has been fixed. :)

I love basement sumps and prop tanks. I also had moisture problems in my basement when I put my sump in. The solution for me was to build a closet and exaust fan. big improvement. I used a dayton lovered fan 12x12 has been running 24/7 for about ten years oil every year or two. you can build a semi permanate closet with 1.5 in rigid foam {not white} and tape. there is a alum foil tape in hvac dep at home depot that sticks really well to rigid foam. You can even make a door from same. by the way the kneewall ontop of your foundation would there be 14" vertical between top and bottom plate. and might that wall be faceing east, south,or even west? have you ever seen a tube skylight {home depot} only about 250.00 ea. nice little plastic bubble outside. installed lots, easy! they let in amazing amount of light. two would light up a closet alot. just a thought Not tryin to knock your setup its cool. just tryin to help

Can you buy the rigid foam that thick at Home Depot? The area I have my sump is in a separte area of the basement that will remain unfinished. It as approx. 35'x10'. There is a wall already framed with a door opening on the long part of the area. I considered using a thinner foam board(1/2") or just getting some plastic to put up on the one wall to section this area off fomr the rest of the basement. The other 3 side of that area is concrete wall. What do you think would be the cheapest most effective way to do this?

My wife has been looking at small green house setups and thought about just enclosing the sump area that way but I think using the pre-existing walls would be easier. I will need to get the humidity under control since that same area is where store our junk :)

What kind of fan are you using? What size outlet? I am using a 4" duct fan right now. Not sure if it will vent my room once I close it up or not.

As for the skylight, that is a great idea but the wall you see in the pic is the front of my house. There are shrubs at ground level so I don't know if I could get much light or not.

Thanks

2x4s are 2.50 ea sheetrock 5.00 a sheet thats as cheap as you get. inexpensive door 35.00 4 hour wala. for example a 6x8 room studs and rock all sides and rock for ceiling. 9 4x8 sheets 45.00 28 2x4 140.00 cheap door 35.00 plus nails ,mud ,tape. 250.00 ish. foam room no studs would be about the same. have you been through a winter yet? my basement is chilly at night ,couldn't keep temp up in winter. foam could be beneficial?

just a thought; maybe a foam lid cut to fit your sump and tight lid on prop tank. problem solved? let your system breath a little upstairs where the climate is controled. maybe easyer than expected. cheap as ya get like me.

honey would you mind if I ripped out the landscaping in the front of the house so I can put in these ugly skylights in for my FISHieS? What?

the fan I use is a louvered fan that you would have to cut a 12"x12" hole in the FRONT of your house. OH honey

have to go I am adding today a 12'x2'x12" trough to my greenhouse. no not for flowers

loinphishy

I thought about drywalling it. I could drywall the side of the basement that might get finished one day. I would have to cover up the gaps in the ceiling where the floor joist are. I have never done drywall before though. I could just hang it and mud it sometime down the road. Mudding nad asanding makes a mess :)

We moved in March. I was cold but I don't remember how cold it got. I have been using 2 300 watt and a 150 watt heater for the whole system. Right now 1 300 watt is only on dueing the night and the 150 I broke. I might need to do something before winter. The foam top is a good idea too. The wife has been wanting me to cover it up anyway :)

Good ideas!

nickreef
08/13/2005, 11:48 AM
Chelmon rostratus is a good eater of Aiptasia. Not all the Chelmon eat the aiptasia but an high percentage of them eats all the aiptasia in your tank. One Chelmon is ok for one tank of any size. Be careful to giant clams , sometimes chelmon can attack them but rarely. Try to get a chelmon in the shop already eating otherwise you risk to see it died after the aiptasia finished...

Whats that difference between regular acrylic and mirrored acrylic?

delv
08/14/2005, 03:52 PM
It has a reflective layer on the outer edge...It's not some ground breaking technique...I just had it laying around and thought I'd slap together another prop tank. I do hope it helps reflect and disperse light into the hard to reach areas of some of my colonies....seems to be doing the trick so far...

The mirrored portion sounds like a great idea. Why doesn't every one with a BB frag tank go the mirrored way, it could only help right. Although the cost might be alot more.

I've been thinking about setting up a prop tank for fun. For you guys that have prop tanks (except of the business owners and large scale people that posted) do you have them setup just to grow stuff out for yourself, or do you sell the corals for profit?

ellisz
08/17/2005, 04:45 AM
I set mine to up to keep my display nice and tidy. Eventually things will get too big. I try and trade to LFS, go to frag swaps and I do sell some online. Would not necessarily say I make a profit. $5-15 a frag helps pay for stuff I need or want :)

Ours was setup specifically with trimmings in mind. I dont agree at all with chop shop type setups, and so any time something needs trimming, it gets put in the prop tank.

I'll admit, that I'd like to make some money on it, but for now, its been $5-$15 frags (like the above post). I just sold some yesterday, and I think that its gonna be money OUT of the tank is money INTO the display tank. Salt, kalk, a nre piece of equipment, etc.

So we are not a for profit venture, though I've considered selling some online, or to the LFS. I also have trading in mind.

Just got water flowing into mine last night. The frag tank on the left is just a 33 long, and the tank on the right is my show tank. I know it holds less water then most of you guy's skimmers so don't laugh. :) The rack is made out of eggcrate, I made the right side of the tank 6 different platforms that all come out. The legs are eggcrate that I siliconed in place before it had water in it. The other side is going to consist of just two seperate peices of eggcrate and will hold mostly larger mother colonies of my nicer zoas. Lighting for both tanks is an IC660 with two 110watts on the 33 and two 75watts on the 37.

Any advice is appreciated. :)

The plan is to start aqauculturing my nicest zoas to trade so I can get the biggest zoanthid collection ever.... :D
