rwhhunt- No, no tankmates. My plan was let him have the tank all to himself, but people have told me to try another fish so he's not bored. I don't know if fish get bored, lonely, or are social. He does barrel rolls, begs for food, grunts, spits water. He loves attention, this may sound weird, but we even play a little hide and seek. When he finds me he'll dart over and put his lips on the glass. None of the fish in my reef tank have no where near the personality of this fish. They all could care less if I'm in the room.

do you think he will chew up anything you would add to the tank? are they as aggressive as they say?

07/06/2005, 07:42 PM
I have an undulate, he's a mean little bastard, but he lives with a sulphur head moray of the gymnothorax genus, so they are both extremely aggressive. There are fights sometimes when its feeding time, but they cant kill each other, and I think they enjoy each others company when there is no food in the tank. You may be able to add a moray of somekind (not a snowflake, my undulate beat up on my resident snowflake when I introduced the trigger)

Yes, my large Volitan still has his "horns". I'm not sure why though. I've read the other posts here about Lions not having their horns...I'm not sure.
However, my Lion has one "horn" shorter than the other. Not sure if it was nibbled off or what.
They're hard to see in this pic, but you can still make them out...they're roughly 3" - 4" long.

CT's are very hit or miss....IME.
This one is pretty tame, hasn't even looked funny at other tank inhabitants. There are 2 cleaner shrimp in the tank, a decent size hermit crab, a small arc-eye hawkfish, a lawnmower blenny, and other triggers......all things that should "trigger" the infamous CT behaviour.
Some friends of ours own a LFS here in town, and they have a 9 yr old CT in a 500g community tank......he has always been a model citizen and he is 14"+ long
IMO, if you keep them well fed and have a tank with ample space and plenty of hidey-holes, the CT will be less apt to be aggressive
B Pierce
07/07/2005, 04:16 PM
I have heard of CT living peacefully for years and then suddently attacking and eating other tank mates. I have also heard that aggressiveness increases with age.

I don't know much about ray, but from what I've heard about fresh water ray they tend to make water dirty very fast(they poo a lot.) So what about marine ray, maybe not if you got a very very big tank and a very very good filter system, no?
Here's my baby, I've wait for him/her for a long time. Just pick him up today after seen him in the shop for 3 weeks. After I saw him ate live fish and I decided to have him. He's in 20gallon or 24 inches tank with couple of sponge and no tankmate, of course. He's Antennarius Maculatus, so I guess he won't be much bigger than now(around 4 inches.) His name is "Pink" at least untill he decide to change to other color

I added one about 8 months ago as an "experiment" and over the course of the following 4 months, I added another 3.
Three are still living in the tank after 8 months. The largest one became a meal for the Harlequin Tusk, but he has never bothered the others

Thanks for the replies. I have two 210 gallon AGRESSIVE tanks. One is filled with BIG fish, one with smaller.
The Queen trigger is about 11 inches nose to tail. She fears nothing! The Clown is about 8 inches and very tough, he is the smallest fish in the tank.

Someone asked how much the Giant Hawkfish cost me. I don't really remember as I have had him for about two years. It was probably around $200 wholesale. He is about 12 inches long and he has killed many fish, sometimes just for fun it seems! They are pretty rare. Remove the lion ASAP. During feeding or night, rays communly run into lions by accident!!! This almost always kills the ray!!
I feed mine vitimen enriched krill, silverslides, clam, squid and ocean nutritions shark formula. He also gets the occasional live ghost shrimp or crayfish as a treat. I would vitimen enrich his foods with zoa or zoacon. Remember juvniles can't chew fiberous foods.
How big is yours? BTW you are waaaay overstocked get that 180 up ASAP.

Well, I watched him all night and he stayed away from simba. If theres any trouble ill remove simba from the tank. Dont worry all the fish are small and I have 1400 GPH of circulation and an Aqua C remora skimmer. Mr. Ray is only about 4" in diameter and about 7" in total length. My ray has not gone anywhere near the lion as far as I know. I feed him when he's on the other side of the tank than the lion just to make sure he does not run into him.

juice me man, Even if you have had a lion and ray together for years this dosen't mean that there will never be harm to the ray. Please read Scott W. Micheals book, Aquarium Sharks and Rays.
Rays and sharks get crazy during feeding and sometimes and night and can easily bump into a sleeping lion.

BTW angelfishlover, there is a more likely chance that your ray will bump into the lion if they are kept in a small tank.
How much Lbs. or LR do you have in there?
Bill
angelfishlover
07/14/2005, 02:13 PM
about 5 ibs. I removed most of the rocks to give the ray room to roam. I have about a 3" sandbed in there.

round stingrays are cool water fish. IMO they should be kept at about 70 but 73 isn't too bad. You may run into some problems with keeping a cool water fish in with some tropical fishes tho.

just get a ticket to Germany, stay for 2 nights, rent a porch, BMW, MRC or waterver and just driving down the autoban. many people do. and it be cheaper than shipping your car from the US to Germany.

Unless you want that stingray to become dinner, do not put it with an adult Commerson's Angler (which that one is). They will eat other fish that are the same size as their own body.
They'd need a species only 75 - 90gal. tank with extremely good water quality.

I don't think it's HLLE, he has had it for about 6 months, it started when a razar blade type cut across his head, I'm guessing from the Sohol, since he chases him sometimes. I have also seen him scape that part when he dives under the rocks. Not sure why it's mot healing up, he eats like a horse, seaweed, Formula 1 & 2, squid, shrimp and krill.

He's become a real porker since this picture was taken. I'll try to get a new pic and post it soon. He's about 14 inches from nose to tail and he has eaten a 12 inch panther grouper. Otherwise, he's pretty mellow. I can put my hands in the tank and he won't bother me. I have a giant green brittle star in the tank, and he doesn't bother with it. I even saw his previous owner pick him up! He didn't even move.
So I guess he shouldn't be considered mean, but if something edible enters the tank...

He's in a 30 gal cube tank. I know this sounds small, but he rarely ever moves. He may reposition himself, but that's about it. The only time he ever swims to the top is when he's hungry. It is a cool sight beacuse his fins are huge and they look like wings!
Anyway, I was feeding him whole shrimp, but know I've been feeding him yellow croakers that I get from a fish market. Usually once a week.
I bought him about 6 months ago from my LFS. He sat in that store for over a year. I convinced them that nobody would ever buy him, except me of course, so I paid $100.
The pic of him eating is from a video I took. Anyone know a good free video hosting site?

Well, my new fish came today.....a day early. The fish store called, while I was at work. I got all excited, talking to my friend, there......he's going on and on about how the Blue Throats are beautiful.
I ordered a 6" male/female pair of Blue Throat Triggers and a 6" Harlequin Tusk. What I got was....an 8" male Blue Throat, a 6" Clown Trigger and a 4" Tusk....the bastards! lol

I let the store keep the Clown Trigger, which was aprox. 8" and they're calling tomorrow to have them ship my female Blue Throat. They tried to convince me to take the Clown home, for free...but I dont want an 8" Clown Trigger anywhere near my DME. lol Too risky, for me.
From the 3rd pic, with the Blue Throat, hiding......
He hasnt moved from that spot, and he's been in the tank for over an hour. hahah
Although, I must say...he's a little *****...
I was floating his bag, in my tank, and he had his head up...almost like he was looking out of the water. I leaned over and started touching his head, face, etc. Then, after I moved my hand, my face was just a few inches from him.....he spits a big glob of water, right in my face. hahahaha He continued spitting water at me until I moved away from the tank.
I think they're all done with pics tonight...I'll get some more tomorrow.
