Okay, so it's been a long time coming. I moved and it gave me a reason to put in a bigger tank. I'm upgrading from my 150g to a 265g. I'm working on the plumbing right now and should be done with it in the next day or too. Here are some pics of the project so far. I still have a lot of work to do but I'll keep you updated with the progress.
Tank Specs:
265 gallon glass (3/4" all) - eurobraced - Aqua Aquariums

Ali - I've been waiting to finish up the plumbing so I can move stuff over. It's just killing me!
Chuck - Thanks... I was scared it wasn't gonna fit through my door with guys lugging it around. Thank goodness we only had to only pick it up for about 30 feet.

Did you custom make the stand and canopy? What you going to put in your new tank?

Yeah, it was HEAVY. I'm guessing it weighed about 800lbs.
slobound
07/04/2005, 11:57 PM
Yes, this is just the frame of the stand and canopy. I built it myself. I'll finish it off after I move the contents of the 150 into this tank. It'll be the same as my other tank... full blown SPS reef.

Thanks everyone... hopefully it won't be too much longer before I get my corals in there.
kevinrs - I get my sps from all over. I was buying a lot from on-line vendors before. Now I just collect from friends locally.
daphaze1 - yeah, if it wasn't for those guys... there's no way that tank gets in the house. I am amazed that they were willing to help.
Scott - hey, thanks for the help!!! It's almost plumbed, just have to pick up a couple more parts today.

Roland... I was working on the plumbing since Friday. I don't know how many times I went to Home Depot/AquaFlo/Home Do-it Center so far. I'd either forget something or screw something up. I'm surprised I've gotten this far. Here are some updated pics of what I've done. I still need to plumb in my closed loops AMP 3K. That still on the current tank so I can move it until I move the livestock.

Nice tank, looks like the plumbing is coming along too!
I know what you mean about trips to HD. When I plumbed my tank I went there so much that it was not even funny. I was calling the cashiers by name after a while...
The worst part was the returns, the lady in returns tries really hard not to roll her eyes when she sees me come in!

Garrick,
Plumbing was the hardest part for me. Once that was over, it was a breeze! What took even longer was that I ordered a lot of my plumbing fittings online and some were backordered. Looks like everything is coming along nicely. The one thing I would suggest is black pvc for the returns. You can barely even see mine with the black background. They're cheap too at http://www.savko.com/index.asp.
Also, what are the dimensions of your tank and where did you have the holes drilled for the closed loop? It's gonna take a long time to fill that bad boy up with ro water!lol

Yeah, I agree... the white sticks out like a sore thumb. That's actually just a temporary return until the locline comes in. Then I'll re-plumb using black. Good thing I put that on a union fitting! =)
The tank is 84"x30"x24"
You are absolutely right about taking forever to fill it. I only have 1/5 of the tank filled so far since 5 o'clock last night. Waiting stinks!!!

Thanks Benny!
I'm glad I can steer clear of HD and Lowe's for now!lol
Garrick,
My 170g took a little over 24hrs to fill but I have a 150gpd ro/di. Are you using starboard or sand? I wished I had painted the board that the tank sits on either white or black. It only took Madison and I to lift my tank into the wall but Madison's fingerprints were left behind on his side which will always show until coraline covers it!lol How many pumps you gonna use to run this bad boy?
Roland

07/06/2005, 02:35 PM
Roland,
I'm going to go with sand again. I luckily haven't had any problems with it on my past few tanks so I'm gonna do it again. Not a DSB, but just for aesthetics. I'm just using the panworld (1290 gallons) for my return and the ampmaster 3K for the closed loop. Once the corals start growing out more, I may have to add more but that should be OK for now.
How's your tank lookin?

Rich, the 150 is still set up... about to go down in the next day or two. I'm moving everything over at that time.
Mike, I'll try to shoot some pics of the 150 before it goes down and post a before and after. Good idea...

Good choice! I think if I did it again, I would have a 1/2" sandbed. I've got so much flow to keep the detritus away that there is no way I have that option of sand in this new tank.
I just started adding livestock to the tank and so far, so good. I know you were out in my neck of the woods awhile while I was away but if you do come around again, stop by!

Nah, I've lost a lot of corals already because my current tank is still at the old house. I don't get to take care of it like when I was at home. That's why I'm anxious to get everything over. Tank is over halfway full with just water. I'm getting there....
You do need to make a trip out here once I'm all set up.

Chuck, I just looked over at airwaterice and you're right, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. With your new tank size, I think it was GREAT investement... I seriously don't know how you would fill that monster with a 110GAL/day RO unit! I would sit there and cry...

Yeah, I really do want to add a nice fairy wrasse like a linneatus or rhomboid... the possum wrasse is cool too. Definately on the fish list.

07/19/2005, 11:58 PM
I watched a possum wrasse hunt in Tubs's tank. Those little buggers move their eyes like chameleons. They actually swim around the structure and pick stuff off.
I guess what I am hinting at is that I believe they will eat monti-branchs.
I have a solar wrasse and I recommend them because they seem to be more people friendly than other fairies. My friend has a rhomboid and a lineatus. They aren't bad looking.
If you are looking at lineatus wrasses, I would look at pink margin wrasses. They look almost identical to lineatus wrasses, execpt they have a red tail. IMO, they are better looking and half the price if not less than a lineatus.

You know, we've all kicked that idea around and around for a few years now. Do ya think maybe we can all get together and setup a time and place.
WE just need to figure out a course that would be fair for everybody to drive too..How about Los Serranos or Green Rivers?
I kind like Sierra lakes but guys in the OC might not want to drive that far.
I wouldn't mind setting things up but I'm going to need cash up front. I know how things go, we're all talk till its time to get off your arse and go. If we can get the tee times paid for up front then maybe we'll be able to do this.

I'm pretty happy with my skimmer. I tend to skim more wet but I try to keep up with water changes every 3 weeks to replenish what's been skimmed out. I've done the gate valve mod and the re-circulating mod on the skimmer right when I got it. I don't know how it would run without those mods.

Hi Bill, I placed 1/2" styrofoam between the tank and the stand to take away any imperfections on the top of the stand, just in case. I haven't had any problems using the foam. I also know a few other reefers in the area with big glass tanks that have done this as well. No problems from them either.
Bergovoy
01/06/2007, 07:31 PM
I was told absolutely, positivly NO.
so I did not do it. And I worked extra hard to minimze those imperfections. It would have been easier to plan for the insulation..
Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm... never heard that before. I've used it on my last two glass tanks. I'd be curious to hear the reason why you shouldn't use it?
Bergovoy
01/06/2007, 08:12 PM
I was told taht the glass tanks are supported from the perimeter glass, not the bottom glass, and byplacing insulation under it, that would transfer the weight to the bottom glass, which was not designed to carry the weight of the tank and water.
So support only the edges.
It kind of makes sense but then again it doesnt. The perimeter glass supports the bottom glass through the silicone, so whether the silicone supports the wieght of the tank from teh bottom glass then transfers it to the perimertor or visa versa, does not make sense...
I am not an engineer so I can not give an answer, onlhy relay what I was told.

Scott, I have a small bow front you can use, make a great nano ;)
As far as insulation under the tank, it depends on the tank. Usually if the tank has a built on frame, then you don't want to put anything under the bottom glass. The frame is the suport.
Now if you look at a Lee Mar tank, they come with a plastic sheet covering the entire bottom. These you can run something under the entire bottom (like foam insulation) as long as any imperfections are slight and don't cause any pressure points.
Bergovoy
01/08/2007, 10:07 PM
The issue with the insulation was to make up for slight imperfections, or inother words if there was a slight low spot, the insulation would distribute the weight and the insulation woudl compress at the adjacent high area and overall leverl out over that slight low spot... (did that make sense? IT did when I thougth it??)
Konadog
01/08/2007, 10:15 PM
I understand completely Bill, I have a 1/2" piece under my tank. I just wanted to point out that it depends on the tank style if it's acceptable to do. Also, this isn't to make up for bad craftsmanship of a stand. You would be amazed as how little foam compresses when spread out over a large area.
Bergovoy
01/08/2007, 10:32 PM
I am not sure if it is a matter of bad craftsmenship or not as wood is not perfectly straight. there are bound to be some warping or crowing of the wood.
Plywood helps in covering the studs which would show the most imperfections, by averaging out the imperfections over a span of the piece of plywood. The insulation I think might do a little bit more.
Each consecutive layer spreads the issues even further and over a longer distance.
Like joint compoud on new drywall. Each coat is applied over a larger and larger surface area. The high spot is still there, but if it is compared to aspot right next to it, you will not be able to tell, but if you were able to take a laser to it, you will still see that the high spot is still there, and actually got a bit higer then original...
Not real sure about that analogy, but it is out there now...
Your point about wher ethe suppor tis located is important though. if the frame is on the edge, the support should not transfer it to the bottom glass, again that is what I was told.. And in one line of thought, it makes sense..
I wish I used it, even if iwas just for the edges. I dont see how it could hurt as long as the force remains ont he edge, and like you said, the insulation does not give that much in compression
Thanks,
Bill

Mmm, I love solid axles. I got rid of my lemon and picked up a new FJ Cruiser. I thought they were ugly at first (then I saw what they can do offroad). It sucks that it is IFS, but with a few mods, they can hold their own in the rocks.
Garrick,
Any equipment changes?

Nope... still drivin' the mustang. Oh, I did get a little beater truck take save some miles on the mustang though.
OHHHH... you're talking about the reef. No changes real changes there. I've been having a string of things breaking on me. My CO2 regulator just went ka-put so I ordered another one, should be coming in today. My sea-swirl finally stopped working (after 3.5 years). I'm gonna send it in for repair. One of my Helios bulbs stopped firing after 2 months, so I just replaced it with one of my old radiums for now.
I guess, when it rains... it pours!

Great tank Garrick. Congrats!
Just noticed you're in the timbuktoo Simi Valley as well.
I'm between Sycamore and Erringer off of Alamo St.
Let me know if I can come by and check out your tank and of course you're welcome to swing by my pad as well. I have 270, 150 and 100 gallon tanks and desperately need to thin some of my SPS.
Don't ask me to name what I've got, cause I'm terrrible w/ names...i just know what I think looks puuuuurty and grows well  .
For example, I've got a blue stag of some type with really bright blue tips that is outgrowing my 100 gallon tank to the waterline and branching out and shadowing all the corals beneath it. I've fragged it so many times already into my other tanks that I just don't know what to do with it anymore. Maybe we could swap some frags!
Anyway, let me know and I can pm you my cell #.

BTW, he is quite happy and fat in my 100 gallon tank, despite his 20 minute out of water experience!
You are quite a drive from me (about 45 minutes i think), but if you want to make the drive, sure come on over! :D

Gisho,
IT was way more then twenty minutes. I was at REnes house for longer then that, then the drive to my house, then the time it took you to drive to my house. I am thinking miracle happened in my house...
Thanks for the offer, I will let you know when my tank is ready. I still making sure things are stable, and will only take on some less expensive very easy and sturdy corals to start.
I really need to finish the aquascaping, and think I need to clear out some of the live rock I picked up. Too much of a good thing, and I have no room. Did you get hte info on the coral meet thing? Iw ill be going too, maybe you can drop by my house on the way out if you are going that way. My tank should be okay by then.

Yeah Bill, you are right. It probably survived in a little hole or crevice in the live rock for at least 1 hour if not more! Maybe a world-record?!?!? That guy is a tough little son-of-a-gun.
Anyway, yeah, I've got some sps that grow like weeds, are quite hardy and pretty to boot. I have some that even survived a massive kalkwasser overdose and subsequent pH spike recently in my 150 gallon tank :eek1: . Feel free to let me know if/when your tank is ready.
Tacocat was kind enough to PM me the info, but it is just soooooo far away for me. Sounds like fun though and I hope all of you who go have a blast.
Thank for the invite and I wish I could see your tank in person up-and-running. I hope you post pics of your tank soon. It sure looked like a beauty.

Having the fish survive like it did makes me wonder about all the precautions we take to acclimate and adjust and fine tune to avoid and or minimize shock or stress.
Certainly life in the open water is not all the stress free
And no I am not advocating that we throw fish into new water or not take reccomended steps and measure to minimize, just recognizing that maybe some fish (maybe a lot of fish)are tougher then what we give them credit for.
If you know your corals and what they maybe capable of tolerating, then let me know what my tank needs to be at to be responsibly take on some new cultures.
I will be completing the chiller installation this weekend, since I am noticing a 3 degree swing in temp due to my new lights, and that is with moderate ambient temperatures. If the weather returns to normal So CAl temps, I will need that chiller up and running.
I am also close to finishing my electrical system. Everything will be nice and clean, but the weak link in my system is that I am tying onto my existing circuits, and adding all this equipment and lighting and chillers is putting my demand at the circuit breaker limits, not counting that that breaker is already used for all my other recpticles...
I may have to get an electrician out here to branch off from my existing light circuit to feed my lights, instead of feeding them from my recepticle circuit will help out tremendously, as my lighting circuit demand is on the low side of , (exisiting lighting demand)
I know how to do it and where I can branch from, but since the branch and wiring will have to be run surface mounted, I want the conduit or raceways to be nice and clean. Something I am not capable of doing.
And the convention in Ontario is not that much further past my house. Maybe another half hour drive.
But I understand, you have at least a half hour from your house to mine, plus the extra road to Ontario...
I hated communting, and cant understand how it is that so many people do it everyday....
Take care.
Bill
