I saw a very beautiful Peacock Mantis at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicgago on Sunday. (In the crab exhibit of all places.) I had no idea they got that big! It was easily 4" long. Camera shy though :-( Is this common for a Peacock Mantis?

holy crap thats awesome....is it there permenently? i live in the chicago suburbs and i have been meaning to go there i had no idea they had a peacock that size. 4" that means for feet or four inches? either way its still cool...but four feet would be a ****ing monster

If it's the same shrimp, (and I believe that it is), it's been at the Shedd for quite some time...

I seriously hope your kidding, If four foot mantids existed, mankind would be in serious trouble...

4" = 4 inches. I wouldn't stick my face within 10 feet of a tank that held a four foot mantis shrimp! :-) This fellow has his own small display tank in the temporary exhibit section (it's the crab exhibit at the moment.) No "room mates" for some reason! :-) I don't know how much longer it will run, but it was pretty cool.

I was there last year and they had that mantis. They also have a beautiful pair of Harliquin shrimp.

I saw a picture of mantis captured in the gulf of mexico that was over 1 foot long, about 14 inches, but I can't find the link now. Scary!
