I was looking through my tank pics tonight and decided to post my 9 month progress pics.. As you can see the tank has gone a long way and is still very young. The only thing that has remained the same is my bad camera skills. Hopefully the changes will be just as dramatic in the next 9 months. Enjoy.

What happened to the fish from the first pick? Or did they meet the fate of my first attempt at a tank?

three?? Second and third is just like the last. The first is the only one that's different. I changed the rockwork because it was really hard to add corals to it. It was really nice for a FOWLR tank

Just wanted to add that the quality of my water ever since I started dosing ozone is UNBELIEVABLE!! It always looks as if there is no water in there.

Thanks to JB_NY for convincing me.

What do you mean changed?.
He really only stays in that spot and doesn’t touch any of my corals. Why, are they known to pick at corals?

Thanks for the complements everyone! I will be upgrading my tank in about 3 weeks to a 4' by 3' foot tank. I am actually in the process of designing my closed loop and everything else right now. I would really appreciate some feedback as to what I should look out for or what I should do. Closed loop, how many holes should I drill, Overflow exterior? etc please help me design my tank. It will be SPS 100% so I really want some good flow.

Hey, beautiful reef.

Can ask what your alk/calcium demand is?

ssbreef
09/15/2005, 01:50 PM
Well the corals in my display are not the only corals in my system. I have about that much more in my grow out tank. I don’t know what the demand is because I'm using a calcium reactor. I have it set to a steady stream pouring into my sump so it must be pretty high. I keep my CA at 420 and alkalinity at about 10DKH.

*** A+ ***

looks very nice!

Thats a lot better growth than I'd expect with 20k's... you must be doing a lot right ;) Any draw backs to the ozone?

ssbreef
09/15/2005, 10:42 PM
Yeah I seem to be getting GREAT growth with my 20k's contrary to what everybody says. No drawbacks with the ozone just GREAT results! Crystal clear water!!

I think a lot has to do with the fact that your using the radiums. For a 20k they have the highest par rating and if you are running them on an HQI mag ballast they dont look like other 20k they look more like 14k's. I also loved my radiums but at $89 that was alot for just one bulb and I had two of them. But a nice growth shots and awsome tank.

Looks GREAT! Why upgrade?

Seems like nobody's happy with their 90 gallon but me... :) Everyone I know that put in a 90 gallon talks about an upgrade right away.

Assuming you've got your mind set on the upgrade - just take everything you have and throw it in the new tank the exact way it is now. :) Use the extra space for a larger open sandbed and more swimming/coral growing room!

ssbreef
09/16/2005, 01:08 AM
Thank you all for your kind words and thumbs pointing upward.:D.

Jamesurq, that is exactly what I want to do. I want the extra space for clams and some softies on the sand bed, I also want the tank to look a little less cramped.

Very nice...I was getting a little scared in the first couple of pics with the hair alge. How did you get rid of it? Tell me more about this ozone you are dosing with. I currently run a uv steralizer once a month. Does this work better?

ssbreef
10/01/2005, 11:28 PM
fishypets: The tank is only about 10 months old, so the hair algae you saw was in the first 3 months of the tank being up, which is a very normal process (cycle) to go through when first putting up a tank. I did nothing to get rid of it other than skimming and letting the cycle do its job. As for the ozone, there isn’t a single piece of equipment I have bought that I have been happier with. Results are immediate! The very next day I saw the difference in water quality.

Most of my corals are aqua cultured. Although I do think I have one or two that are wild. If I know a coral is wild caught I won’t buy it.

The streams are the best buy I ever made after the ozone.:D

Nice looking tank. Did you consider scraping the coraline off of the back pane? IMHO it would give your tank and your great looking corals a nice background and a lot of depth. What color is your background?

Yes I have, because my wife doesn’t stop bothering me about it. She calls it dirt and tells me that I should clean it. I on the other hand kinda like the look of it. My background is just a plain black.

argo

My background is just a plain black.

So much the better - it would definitely improve the overall look of your tank and make those corals and colors pop even more.

It might be a major PITA scraping all that coraline though.

PErsonally I think it looks just as good without the scraping. I think its a tank we'd have to see in person because the corals are soo awesome I wouldn't be worried about the background. It may be better though to have a solid backround for pics....for us internet browsers.
