Hey guys-

I have had in use 2 Reefkeepers for about 6 months on one and 8 months on the other. Throughout this time they have worked extremely well and couldn't be happier with the service and support from Digital Aquatics.

I recently decided to upgrade tanks and thought of some things that would help improve the unit or maybe even an entirely new unit for folks with larger tanks and ineviteably more, specialized, equipment.

Some of these have been heard before and some are new.

Here goes-

1) pH probe.
We've all been asking, but this would be a great addition to the RK lineup.
In addition to that, upgrade the software to allow an outlet(s) to be switched on/off when the level gets above/below a certain value
This would be useful in Ca reactor applitations among other things.

2) Multiple timers for an outlet(s).
A setting in the software that would allow an outlet(s) to come on/off multiple times duing the day/night
This would be useful for running MH for 3hrs in the am and 4 hrs in the pm, a trend I see more reefers doing these days.

3) Gang-able or multiple power strips
An option to use cat5 cable to run multiple power strips on the same brain unit. These could have DIP switches to give each strip an address and allow it to be controlled by th main unit. These could be sold seperately to keep cost down.
Really-who only has 8 things to plug in and have seperate control over in a reef tank?
This would also give us the ability to use different house circuits w/o overloading the unit

These are just some ideas. I'm sure there others out there.

Also - I realize that most of the controller manufacturers are trying to cut costs (IE aquacontroller jr., etc.), but I think this unit could easliy be made scaleable so the initial investment could be large or small. For example - changing the software to do all above would be a one-time major expense for Digital Aquatics. The addition of "ports" for a pH probe and a cat5 cable shouldn't cost too much. But, other than those expenses, the RK could be sold like it is now: Brain, temp probe, and power strip. The pH probe, additional power centers, etc. could be sold seperately. That way us reefers could add those components as we need them.

That would also allows DA to keep customers throughout their entire reef experience. When I set up my first reef, I didn't have the need for pH probe, more outlets, etc. But now I'm doomed to either buy another controller, rig up this one with tons of extension cords, or something else.

LASTLY-

For all of you guys at Digital Aquatics:
I'D BE HAPPY TO BETA TEST THE NEW UNIT:D

I second the willingness to test a new unit on my big tank! ;) Suggestion # 2 is the only reason I haven't purchased this unit yet.

Here's mine: provide the "feed mode" option for devices on the "wavemaker" cycles. I have a pair of Streams I run on "A" and "B" cycles alternating hourly. These move lots of water and are best turned off when feeding. Right now I pull the plug on whichever is running at feeding time. It would be great to just puch a button.

Gillies, That functionality already exists, perhaps you just don't have it configured correctly or something. When I press feed mode my powerheads set as wavemaker turn off, they don't keep going as you describe.

My #1 is add functionality to turn lights off if temps reach a certain level just as a safety measure.

#2, is when you want override the lights and turn the channel to always on or always off, then I have to reset my schedule times, they seem to go back to default 8am-8pm. Because of this I just removed my lights from the controller and use an intermec timer for those plus it frees up some channels. Another reason I took off the lights is because the battery backup isn't working and have yet to send it back in for repair.

I got mine back (same problem) a few weeks ago and so far I am pretty sure they have it fixed.

I got to say I love my Reefkeeper, but if some of the ideas were added I would be updating.

David,

Have you checked out our website? We have a hassle free way that you can change out your controller with out sending in your old one until the new one arrives. If it's not clear send our support department an email and I will send you the info. We would love to take care of you!

I second the suggestion for Multiple timers for outlets. Besides the lighting application mentioned above, this would be useful for some top-off setups. For example, if you feed top-off water through a kalk reactor, you would want one outlet to come on a few times a day to stir the kalk reactor and another outlet that energized the top-off system that was deactivated whenever the kalk was being stirred and for a settling time therafter.

I think the multiple power strips via CAT-5 with DIP switch addressing is an awsome idea!

With my setup, I have the tank and some pumps, lights etc. on one side of a wall, and on the other side I have my sump, fuge, etc. (plumbing thru the wall).

With that kind of setup, I could run a Cat-5 thru the wall and control my sump stuff (chiller, heaters, sump pump) while still controlling my lighting and power heads!

Great idea! I really hope to see that, as it would allow us reefer's to customize the right "size" system for our needs!
