Refugium question

I was wondering if you can turn your sump into a refugium & if so what the pros & cons might be? I have a 125 reef with a maybe 20 gal sump. In it is a protien skimmer with it's own pump & the pump back to the main tank. I could set up some sort of light over it & put in macro algae but don't know if this is a wise or practical idea.

I have never tried a sump refugium before. My main concern would be getting algae in either the return pump or the skimmer pump.

I would also look at the amount of space you have for access to your refugium for maintenance. You should be able to reach into the sump easily to remove algae or re-arrange things if you need to.

Of course! Isn't a sump just a waste of space if it isn't a fuge?
