What are the very rare and expensive fish that people have seen. I know the dragon eels are in this category, what else? How rare are these other rare fish? What's the most expensive fish you've seen in a tank or in your LFS?

Dragon eels arent really all that rare i have seen a few on here. Its just a matter of paying all that money for them.

My favorite "rare" fish would have to be a conspiculatus angel. They run $1000+ here in the US. Maybe one day i'll have one, but I might have a stroke if a fish that pricey died in QT.

Don't think they are the hardiest thing either.

Would also like to have a gem tang. Another pricey fish.

I have all common fish. This Regal isnt "rare" but it is not to common to have one in captivity for over a year that eats and is thriving, especially in a somewhat aggressive tank with other large angels. I have been searching for a black sailfin tang but they carry a pretty heavy price as well and am not sure if its worth attempting with my 2 yellows.

and they are not even that rare!! They inhabit the areas around Baja California, where passer angels come from. The Mexican gov't has placed collection and export regulations on these fish.....basically making it illegal to collect, possess, and/or sell

Thats when you see a rash of them @ online wholesalers, someone down in Mexico is running from La policia!!

I have a yellow tang. Does that count?

(actually, I dont have one)

The clarion is one of my favorite angels. I just can't justify paying more than $100 for any fish. Maybe $150. You should see the looks on my friends face when I told them I paid $80 for an eel.

dragon morays are rare. Hawaii limits the collection and exportation of them making them rare. hence the price tag. But my far one of the most beautiful eels/fish in the hobby!

I know, a Pseudojuloides severnsi :). I've only had him for 2 weeks, but he was eating the first day. I've already got him eating out of my hand :D . From what there is on RC about them, it seems people are doing pretty well with this pencil. One member said he had his for over 2 years before it jumped (there were only about 3 members that gave info about theirs, so that's the example I'm using, lol), so I took the risk. He's been doing great so far : ).

The reason you very rarely see them in your LFS is because most of them will reach 7' in length...and, they grow very quickly.

What about harlequin tuskfish,it is quite rare ,moderately expensive, beautiful and deadly...

capt. insano
08/17/2005, 02:42 PM
Harlequins are pretty standard state-side and really aren't that expensive......

I guess different fish command different prices worldwide. I saw that people in Asia and Australia pay a pretty penny for French angels (several hundred dollars), while they are relatively cheap here in the U.S.

DrChristianTroy
08/17/2005, 02:51 PM
In my country we had to pay at least 120 dollars for a flame angel fish but onthe other had we can add a Redsea semilarvatus of M size only for 40 dollars or a friedmani(XL) for only for 28 dollars.

Got the gold dwarf for $150, plus shipping, but the brilliant gold ones can be as much as $500+ ! ! They get to about 10" on average, so I'd say a tank as small as 40 gallons or so would house one just fine.

Wow Criccio, that common?! I went to several LFS, and not so LFS and none had them ever... one said they did but I was let down to see it was a G. miliaris (though still a beautiful eel, it would possibly endanger my other fish). isseym328....how's your white bar doing ? These fish come from the temperate waters of SW Austraila. They are actually quite rare for the US...only a few make it to the US each year....maybe four or five. Most are destined for the Asian markets. I currently have two of them in 60 F water.....they will not do well long term (months) at normal reef temps. They're a great fish. Here's a pic that a guest at my house took yesterday.

How's it going Steve. I had a feeling you were going to post here. =)

I'm glad your boxfishes are doing well. Can't say that about mine. =T The ich kept on coming back for some reason, especially after I raised the salinity level back to normal after hypo. The temperature I kept at around 65 and I believe that is probably not cold enough for the boxfishes. I will have to get a chiller if I want to keep these boxfishes healthy. That is an amazing pic of your fish. Did you ever find a source for the females? I would still love to pair them up if possible....and hopefully get them for alot cheaper. How much do they run in Asia? I actually have a cousin going back there soon maybe he can bring me back another one. :D

Did you ever obtain the other rare boxfish that you sent me a pic of?

Yes...I have a source directly from Tasmania lined up. They are going to return to collecting after their winter break here shortly....unfortunately, I will be going on vacation here shortly too....but, they are going to hold my stuff for a few weeks until I return. Good luck with the ich.....hypo alone won't do it....the ich will still be in the tank. Remember, I talked to the sole collector of white bars....and they are found in 60 F water..... although 65 F should be OK.

Just awesome Steve. I see themarinecenter has had one for quite awhile, it's so tempting but it's hard enough keeping my tank at 74 for my latezonatus. Maybe one day when I can dedicate a tank with a chiller. Btw, how big is that guy?

The prices were hefty on the white bars since they are so uncommon in the US. I purchased one(4 inches) from marinecenter for an insane price but later found a smaller one(2 inches) at the lfs for less than half of what marinecenter was charging me. I was very lucky to find one at the lfs. They usually never make it there mostly because of their rarity and also because of their temperate water requirement. After I told the owner they need to be kept in a tank under 65 degress of water they sold it to me for even cheaper. :D

THe collectors generally get $150 per fish....the wholesaler gets around $350 per fish and the retailer generally gets $500 or more per fish. Your price depends from which one of these guys you get it from.

isseym328
08/25/2005, 08:59 AM
Unsure on how large these boxfishes get. Maybe Steve can chime in on this one.

I believe the wholesalers in LA get them for cheaper because I got my second one for less than $350 from a lfs. However the first one I bought costed me an arm and a leg. Steve when you get back from vacation let me know I would like to attain more specimens from you. :D

steveweast

Issey....the prices will vary depending upon what margin the individual wants to make. It all starts with the collector, who, per my conservations with him, gets about $150 per fish.....so, if the wholesaler wants to get rid of it for a smaller margin, then those savings will work their way through the chain.

I agree Steve. I think sometimes it's difficult to sell these fishes locally since they are so expensive and require special treatment. It's possible the one I bought from the LFS was one of the last boxfishes at the wholesaler and since it was also small and it needs to be in a spcialized tank it might've sold for cheaper. The lfs was actually asking for $400 I believe but I talked it down to $325.

Having said that have you notcied the marine center does not tell their customers that this fish needs to be in temperate waters? I was pretty upset when I found out through you that they need to be in cooler waters. I feel if you're buying such an expensive fish the store should tell you how to take care of it properly.

steveweast
08/25/2005, 10:31 AM
It may not be their fault......here's how is goes....

Fish collected from off the SW Australian coast in temperate waters.

Fish sent to the main distribution center in Cairns, Australia which is located 3000 miles away in NW Australia....right off the GBR.

Fish sent to Asia, US, etc..... and billed as coming from Cairns !!! Thus, the wholesalers think that it's warm water.... and the misinformation gets passed down the line.... unless a knowlegdable wholesaler corrects the mistake. That's why you sometimes see these fish being billed as coming from Cairns or sometimes from the Coral Sea which Cairns abuts.

isseym328
08/25/2005, 10:34 AM
Hmm maybe I should email them and tell them to add more info onto their pages. But I wonder if they will do so since adding that extra info would probably make it harder for them to sell the boxfish..or any fish that's accustomed to cooler waters.

steveweast
08/25/2005, 10:38 AM
It's the same story for the Shaw's Boxfish or the Ornate Boxfish that come from the temperate waters of SE Australia near Tasmania.....I've seen those fish at marine center from time to time too.

thanks,

Either I hear from people that they like my fish, especially the folks on the FO boards.
Or, I get alot of heat, mainly from the hardcore reefers, that I am insane about the type of fish I keep... that I am cruel to them. I know I'm not perfect, but I do try to give my fish the best home I can provide. I don't enjoy watching one fish eat another, but it happens (in my tank, in a LFS, and in nature!) They say I am part of the cause of LFSs selling unsuitable aquarium fish. You know what...if I don't buy it, I'm sure someone else always will!

Anyway, sorry for the rant. Thanks for the kind words. Glad to see there are other nuts out there like me. :hmm4: And, I'll have to check out that site you mentioned, sounds very interesting! :smokin:

I got it at my LFS. It usually comes in small and is mislabeled as a digrammus, which is from the same area. They had it for quite some time and I got it for $75, which was reduced from $125. It was completely wasted out in color and looked nothing like the fish in the picture, that why they couldn't sell it. It eats just about everything as it has a pretty good size mouth.

It's a very slow grower, it's been in my tank for 3-4 years and hasn't grow that much, and this is with it being feed everyday and large meals 2 or 3 times weekly. When I got it I thought it would have over grow my tank by now but it hasn't and still has plenty of room.

The LFS didn't know what it was as a lot of these wrasse look similar when they're small and they usually come in mislabled.

Once it gets to big I plan on donating to the NY Aquarium.

I have two cold water tanks....one with about 100 gals of water..... and a smaller one with about 40 gals of water.... both are tied together with a common sump. I use a 1/2 hp PCI chiller to easily maintain 58 F. I keep the grunt in the smaller tank....which I plan to add cold seahorses to next month with some native sea grasses....along with some more grunts if I can catch some more.

They have stop taking fish but some thing like this I would think that they would want as it's not the common shark or eel that most people are trying to pawn off on them. If not them then the Aquarium down in NJ would most likely take him.

The africanus showed up in our LFS at the beginning of the year they were $400 range. I also saw them online about that time, hardy fish but opposite of a swan they are drab when older. The juvies are vibrant blue the pic is of a intermediate stage between adult hood and juvie.

africanus angelfish are nearly impossible to find. they come from west africa which is seldom collected and sent to the states. it seems as if you see these fish in the trade every 3-5 years or so. i luckily picked mine up from a local wholesaler but it was the only africanus that survived the transport. 15 were shipped and 14 were DOA. This was because of a airline delay :( wholesaler told me they would never order from the west african collector again

Wow, today I spent the most I have ever spent on a fish (garibaldi damsel), though I have bought hundreds and sold tens of thousands of fish in my lifetime-- and it was a mere 127 bucks, but I almost had a mental breakdown when it arrived because the supplier shipped it with a heat pack and it very nearly died from temperature shock during the acclimation (temperate species). There were several points where I actually thought it was dead before it started to come around, then it was eating 4 hours later. Gotta love damsels.
Maybe this species is not among the rarest or most expensive, but its getting closer to it every year with increasing harvest restrictions. Hopefully it will live its full 25-year lifespan, because it'll be that long before I'll be able to spend that much on a fish again...

Man I sure miss my white barred boxfish. That guy had quite the character. I actually bought another one right after it. A baby one at two inches. quite cute. Both died from ich. It was pretty hard to control the ich in 65-70 degree waters. Btw back then those boxfishes were sold at 700 on marinecenter. the small two incher I bought for 300. They are not too expensive at the wholesalers...I'd say around 150-200.

Noone around here purchses caps on a normal basis. Bryan if you ever see one please let me know. Where's elk grove btw? Did you by chance live in southern cali for a while?
