It look like this might happen (still not sure) I'm hoping to keep the cost per bag under 30.00...These are 50# bags of food grade Calcium Hydroxide (Mississippi Lime). I feel this stuff is better then the stuff I got last year.
I'm looking at getting 40 bags, need to know how many takers I'll have. I don't want this stuff sitting around in my garage.

So how long do you think it'll take for me to go through a 50# bag for my lil' 30 gallon tank? :D I'll be interested in some but man my garage is getting smaller by the minute.

Kenny,
I can't tell you that. I can say it a lot cheaper then 10 bucks a pound..
This isn't something you want hanging around, open, in the garage for the kids to get into. I have always suggested to those who buy it to keep it in a sealed container.

Ain't that the truth. It is a great deal. Maybe I'll find someone to split a bag with. Approximately how big is the 50# bag and do you know how long it'll keep if sealed? Thanks Mark.

Tony, Kenny,
Your going to have to ask Steve about this...He's a big time user:lol:
I'd do a search here for all the info you need.
FWIW, I'll be selling my custom MRC Kalk reactor as soon as I get my stuff from George (Geo) The MRC reactor I have use a heavy heavy duty mag stirrer. Its way way better then the units Andy uses.
Tony,
I don't mean to bust your bio balls but do you know what Kalkwasser is? in German it means Lime water..Lime is Calcium Hydroxide. The stuff you buy at your LFS that says Kalkwasser is Calcium Hydroxide, probably a lesser grade then Food grade.

True... i am now looking for kalk reactor....
Man I dripped this stuf for at least 10 years. Never though much about it. It requires you keep messing with the adjustment and still it clogs up.
Spend some money and do it right, just sell off one of your "meat" corals. :D

Steve, at those prices, I'd have to sell all my meat corals and some. But that is an interesting thought tho. Do you know if the dosing pumps that are sold on EBay any good or at least comparable? Let's just say that I did get a dosing pump, what are the steps I would need to take in order to dose kalk properly? Sorry for all the questions but I am starting a 30 gallon tank and want to do it right, or as much as I can afford :( Thanks.
The first link is just a modified version of a medical pump or at least that's what it looks like to me.
Here's an ebay search for them.
Keep in mind some may need some sort of controller.
Also check with the seller that the alarm has been disconnected.
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=dosing+pump
BTW... my comments on selling your coral are left over comments from another thread... not aimed at anyone in particular. :)

Thanks for the link, Steve. Those were the ones I was talking about. They sound like a pretty good deal. The Aqua Medic one looks like it was made for aquarium use.

Dripping KW is against the ZEOlaw Chapter 3, Section 1, Paragraph 1.
But then since when did I follow all the rules.
This time of year about 1/3 of my top-off is KW. During the cooler times it's over 3/4. My Litermeter adds about 4g per day year round.

 well, obviously the thread isn't dead cause it keeps popping up:lol: Like I said so many times. If may or may not happen..I pulled it off once in 03 and flooded So Cal with 1450 pounds of kalk.
You have to look at it from my side. How would you like to bring home 40 bags of Calcium Hydroxide and have it sitting in your garage for months because people flake out on you or don't want to drive that far, wa wa wa... I'll do the same as I did the last time. The cost will be one price the day I bring it home and slowly increase as time goes on, if I get it.
Mark... I still have plenty so just let me know.
I'm going to try and make it out there Sat or Sun. Not sure yet as I've not proposed the trip yet to Barb. She'll want to go until she stops and thinks about it. She don't like reefs and the only fish she likes is Halibut. When Ron and I get together it can last for hours.
I need to check out some books Ron has on FW planted tanks. Ed has a lot of experince in them and his working for Eheim can help me with which way to go with Eheim equipment. I'm going to do that at home so I at least have something to play with there. It's quite and the lighting isn't so dang bright in the livingroom. I haven't had a FW in years and never done a real planted tank before. Maybe a 120 or 150 with a hundred or so small schooling fish.

Join the crowd... before that great buy in 03 I had just bought 12 bags from the Mrs. I used one and sold off the rest since I knew 100# would last me a while. :)
I still got plenty but at this price if Mark can make it happen I'll stick it away for a lifetime supply. It don't go bad. I was paying like 19.95 for a dang plastic jar full before.

Steve, I've always thought that a tank full of those neons (I think that's the name. You know the small blue striped with red) would be awesome. Maybe a couple Discus (those suckers are harder to keep happy then a women) I did the Discus thing for a few years.
You hold on to what you have. I can always get a bag from work if I have to.
Besides, TTF is way too far for me to drive too:lol: Let me know when you plan to go, I'd like to meet up and shoot the breese for a while.
BTW, I have a Hannah PO4 meter on its way.
Thanks Mark.
Either Neon Tetra or Cardinal Tetra which I think gets a little bigger. Maybe 50 of them and another 25 each of a couple other that might stay higher and lower in the tank. No Discus for me, I've done that before and it's as stressful as a reef worring about $100 fish and corals all the time. I just want to wipe down the glass, trim the plants, do a quick WC and be done with it.
Steveu
golfish
09/21/2005, 06:08 PM
That's its...Neon Tetras...How about a few Angels?
I use to raise those over 25 years ago. I know what will happen when they spawn in the tank. I'd need another tank to hatch them, another to raise the fry and it would just lead to way more than I want.
I can't help myself once it happens so I've got to distance myself from the possibilties.

Aha! Now I understand what a Kalk reactor is for! I used about 9 lbs of Mrs Lime's Kalk for the last 6 months and I could not understand why do we need a Kalk reactor. Its sooo simple. A kalk reactor help keep the pH up and because there is no CO2 in the reactor, it does not react until dosed into the sump :0 The reactor keeps the Kalk from becoming less potent. I just picked up a 24" x 4" acrylic tube and am making a reactor.
Thanks to the chemistry forum and DYI!

Yeah, those Harley dealers don't play like car dealers. There are a couple of socal dealers that will beat the prices of others so don't let them tell you its higher than MSRP because of demand. If they know you are serious and willing to go to another dealer (Laidlaws or Glendale) they will bend. These dealers make a ton off of repeat business for parts and acccessories so they will want you back. GEt a quote from all the local dealers and I guarantee they won't let you walk away.
The part about selling the wife, thats much more difficult
