Okay, Okay, well there is nothing new, so instead of a FTS, you get a macro instead. :) Sorry it's a little fuzzy, those polyps just don't stand still in my current! :D

how do you like you pumps, i'm thinking about stealing your return and close loop set up for my tank. also do you think the
revolutions for oceansmotions would work fine on the close loop set up. thinking about putting two of them in the back of the tank.

Actually I love them, they took a little while to break in but they are very tolerable especially with the doors closed. Feel free steal my idea! :) I think it's a great setup and wouldn't do anything different for flow. The revolutions are a great idea, but I feel they are too large for a nano setup and I prefer to be able to direct the flow myself.

I am buying a dosing pump though, my evap rate IMO fluctuates to much and I want consistant Ca and Alk being dosed so I'll be changing out the kalk reactor most likely. That's the only upgrade plans for this tank in the near future.

I just found the first few spots of coraline on the back walls so now I'm stoked to start adding some more corals. :D

Glad to hear things are going well, Eric. Did you get the snails yet? That's awsome that the coraline is growing... I guess a Kalk or Calcium reactor will have to be the next thing added to my system now that I have SG and temp under control.

calvin415
12/08/2005, 04:56 PM
I did, I lost about 30% though (I think it was due to the cold weather) but I'm still waiting for everyone to come collect the snails they claimed. I'm thinking with the loss on shipping and what's spoken for there might not be too many left... You might consider just getting a small shipment off ebay as well.

Not trying to get out of sending you my left overs I just mean shipping 12 snails USPS or getting 100 or 200 for a few dollars more might be better for you... But let me know if you still want mine. :)

Think I'm going to add a jaw fish either tonight or tomorrow... LFS has both a pearly, and blue spot, I love the blue spot but I can't justify 135.00 for a little fish right now. :(

12/10/2005, 10:29 PM
Well, I got a pearly jaw fish Friday night, and a yellow watchman goby today. I hope to add another pearly when they get another one in... So far he's hiding in a cave he built under my rocks hopefully he'll relax and start to use some of the shells I've got for him. Kind of sucks not seeing him... :(

I'll get some pics, once/if the pearly comes out, in the mean time here's the YWG (he's pretty small, about 1.5" long)...

Looks like it. It was so funny last night, when I fed them he came out and was eating like a pig. When she came out he just looked at her, opened his mouth and she went back into the hole. I think he told her to make a pie or something! LOL!!! I still can't believe my wife insists on that name! Oh well at least she's into it now. :)

For now, SPS only. I plan to add my clam back in there (Blue Maxima) and then we'll see what room is left. I'm thinking some rics for rock cover around the bottom, but we'll see what the year brings. :)

Thanks!

Just an update, I'm planning on a small SPS order (5 frags) in the next week, so we'll see how they look when I get them! As for an update with the dosing pump, this is the best thing I've ever done! Very easy to set up and w/in a week my tank is maintaining Ca levels at 400 and Alk at 10.4 DKH without having to dose kalkwasser or worry about my evap rate. I love it!

Thought about it, but not sure what it's going to control... It would just be for monitoring, so I think it would just be a waste. My light is already on a timer, my temp is controlled by the thermostate on the chiller, water flow is done with the squirt, Ca and Alk are on a dosing pump and my ozone has a built in controller. I'm already good to go. :D

dude this is a semi-nano, cause if you think about it, nano means small, and compared to the ocean 40 gallons is small. but oh welll what is my waisting time posting going to do ? nothing lol. hey Calvin, be looking for a split in the next few posts

If we were comparing our tanks to the ocean then even the 8-million gallon aquarium in Georgia would be considered a nano tank (since the ocean has something like 353,458,603,000,000,000,000 gallons). Right? I think it is a general comparison between the average tank in the hobby (since I said hobby, that means the 8-million gallon tank is excluded). I would guess that the average tank in the industry is somewhere between 75 and 120 gallons. From that, you're free to decide if a tank is small, nano, or micro. :)

Okay, back on topic... Eric, did you end up deciding to put a fuge where the chiller was?

Thanks Scott, I thought about that too, but I just hate posting a 40 gallon in the reef section when everyone else seems to be 75+ I just thought I would get laughed at. :(

As for a split, I don't thing that happens until it's a lot larger thread. :)

As for the fuge, I didn't get one, instead I put the dosing pump and B-Ionic bottles in it's place. I figure the amount of nitate removal the macro algae would offer is minimal and the realestate is more key for me.

Merry Christmas guys. :)

I guess it's time for an update again...

I've added 3 new frags,
a small green A. yongei (yes Zach I went ahead and added it. )
a tiny purple A. sp (still trying to ID)
and a small forest green w/ turquoise tips A. sp (also trying to ID)

I'm placing an order with ReeferMadness either today or tomorrow (their website has conflicting dates of when they open) and then I should be done stocking (corals) and just one last fish to go (maybe)... I'll get some more pics either tonight, or after the reefermadness order get's here.

I got a lot of them locally, but the newest are from an order with Reefer Madness, by far the best experience for an online coral order I've ever had. A+ in my book and will definately use them again for any future orders. :)

I have more good news! I no longer have any heat issues... Before my chiller was kicking in a few times a day. Not a big deal, but if it's doing this in Winter, Summer will kill me! I slapped on a couple fans and my tank dropped over 4 degrees! Maybe more since the chiller kept if from going over 82... Anyway, I'll take some shots of the fans soon, definately a great alternative!

Hey quick question for ya, How did you mount some of your frags to your rocks. It looks like an epoxy stick, or putty. I could be wrong though. Thanks.

calvin415
01/13/2006, 01:40 PM
Some of the frags that were on rubble, I used superglue gel to glue the rubble to my LR. Others I used superglue gel to glue the coral directly to my LR, and still other corals I just stuck in a hole without anything and let them encrust on their own.

Hey Bud ... how did you wire your fans ... I have to make these too :P

OH! I saw your movie ... hahahah your firefish is hilarious ... he thinks he owns the place!

What I've noticed about your tank is that from the beginning everyone knew/saw that it was going to set the bar for Nano SPS and you haven't dissapointed anyone! Once it is finished it will be one of the tanks that inspire noobs and others already reefing will aspire to have. Keep fillin' it :P

calvin415

Hey Chocolate! Sorry to taking so long to get back to you, been sick the last week. The fans were wired with a radio shack AC-DC converter, just tied the wired together and shrink wraped the connection.

Thanks a lot for the comment, I really appreciate it, and hope I don't let anyone down. :)

As for my tank nothing too new, I've fragged and sold some corals, bought a baby F Blue Jaw Trigger for the tank and so far she's been a model citizen. I'll try to get some pics soon. I'm building a 20G setup for a buddy and waiting for the funds from another friend that wants a 46x8x8 nano w/ built in filtration. I'm hoping to begin working on my basement soon and once that's finished I have permission to start piecing together my next tank. (315 Gallon 84*36*24 FOWLR Peninsula room divider). Again I'll post pics of my tank soon, but here's some shots of the 20G I'm building for a friend.

calvin415

Big tanks, little tanks, all still have the same needs. The nano reef guys usually have to be really innovative because there isn't a lot of equipment out there for nano tanks.

Hi calvin. How did you prop up the overflow while you were gluing the odd angles?

Not sure how it was done, I hired someone to build my plan... I would assume with small jigs (once the sides were all glued together) to keep it at 90* to the adjacent side. Or just clamped to the corner and then welded one side at a time. The overflow is made of 3/8" so it would be pretty solid for clamping.

NorthernCF
05/17/2006, 05:43 PM
The ones I have been making are for 120's and only 1/4". Tough learning curve on that part. :)

calvin415
05/17/2006, 05:43 PM
Or do you mean forming the overflow box itself? If the overflow box, it wasn't glued, it was cut shallow and then bent into shape... You can see here with it on the heater...

How well were you able to match the walls and sides? or did you just fill in with weldon 16?

calvin415

Lookin good! I'll have to get a dosing pump like you since my sps are starting to grow out now.

That bluish prostrata looks really good though, I bet it colors up more too.

Thanks guys, I'm still fighting the cyano, but I think I've found the cause, Nitrates are 20ppm. I just changed RO/DI filters so we'll see if that helps... If not I'll be busting out the chemicals and nuke it away! :)

Here's some updated shots you can clearly see the cyano...

Great thread and Great tank! Thanks for documenting the build for us all to use, and for pointing me over here from my thread.

What's funny is I have been thinking about replacing my big tank with a 24*24*24, or 30*30*24 cube. There are allot of great ideas here I could use.

Thanks,
Whiskey

Hey Eric! Tank looks awesome as always, even with the cyano! Did you know that Molybdenum can help prevent cyano outbreaks?! Helped me!

So I did a lot more research on Molybdenum and it actually fuels Cyano and Hair Algae! :eek2: I thought it was suppose to prevent it! :eek1: Somewhere along the line I got confused  ... This is a really good article on algae ... Sorry for the confusion buddy however at least I can correct my thinking :p

http://www.syngnathid.org/articles/greenHairAlgae.html

"Molybdenum is essential to beneficial organisms such as zooxanthellae, as well as nuisance algae such as green hair and Cyanobacteria."

what do u think about the 150 watt hqi over a 15g long? as of now i have all my coral in my 5gal tank under four 24" t5ho, but i think the t5s make hair Algae grow!

calvin415
07/20/2006, 12:31 AM
Sounds good to me, I love HQI setups! As for the T-5's unless you are running old bulbs the hair algae isn't a result of the lights it's a result of nutrients in the water...

Nice autotopoff setup how much water do you go through per day? Are you planning to have someone feed your fish?

I average about 2.5 gallons a day, so 10 days = 25 gallons... I'll find someone to feed them, but 3 firefish don't really need too much food.

Guess I need to update this... I've removed some of the rock work from the tank (the front corner) which has opened it up a bit. I was able to get rid of the cyano but I'm currently fighting PM with my clams so I hope they pull through, I lost 1 the other day... I'll get some recent pics posted soon. :)

Good luck with the clams. Mine had a pinched mantle last month...I waited a few days and it went away. I was ready to do a FW dip if I had to. It happened right after I added a pagoda coral that slimed everywhere when I introduced it. I did lose a maxima last year to a spotted hawkfish that I used to have. Forgot to feed it and it nipped the clam to death.

My clams get PM when I tick them off, Alk drops too low, fish nipping, major lighting change, moving them etc,... You might want to do a quick check to make sure it is nothing simple. It always seems to go away a couple of days after I fix the problem.

Well, today is the day, the tank will be coming down as of tonight... I'm really kind of bummed but if you haven't see my other threads, we're trying to finish our basement and this will really help us get closer to being done. And with the basement will eventually come a fish room for my next project...
