Got my squirt today!
Here it is with a 12" Ruler...

Well I went ahead and got a 15W UV Sterilizer... Price was just too good of a deal to pass up, still looking for a 50mg/hr Ozone unit though. Prefer a Red Sea unit so I will probably end up buying a new one. The Chiller should be here on Monday (I can't wait!) and the tank should start construction next Saturday (1 week from today). Still need to buy my sump 10 or 15T (guess I can go to PetsMart???) The Stand and Canopy can't get started until the tank arrives, plus I'm still working on the final design... I still haven't ordered my lights, keep tossing around the color. I've got a 250W SE 14K on my 23, but my Dad's got dual 250W DE 10K's w/ actinics and I think the color just shows more on his tank... I'll post more pics on Monday when the Chiller get's in. :)

Okay, I need some suggestions for lighting... for about the same money I can either go with a 250W SE 10K MH with VHO Actinic's or I can go with a 250W HQI 14K without VHO's... Will a SE bulb be enough or should I need the HQI for this tank? I know 1 MH for every 2 ft, well the tank is 2ft x 2ft... Thoughts? Opinions?

Here are some new pics for ya, the tank is almost completed, Scott has a very ingenious idea on his over flows to help control the water level in the display tank without having to rely on increasing the return flow. He's designed an adjustable baffle on the overflow box (will be on the two outside walls of the overflow) a quick twist of a hand screw and the baffle and can raised or lowered to change the display water level. :) Hopefully the picture helps explain.

I was able to rig up a DIY Kalk reactor with one of my canisters for my Dad's tank the other day (figured he could test out the proto-type). Well I went and check on it, and it looks like it's going to work perfectly! Nice powder settled on the bottom, and clear lime water on the top. Just enough flow; the rodi must pass through the powder to enter the canister and it doesn't create a constant cloud. I'll get some pics when I can.

Got an update on the tank:
The shell was routed flush, the top template was built, routed out, and was bonded and curing last night. The bottom w/ bulkhead holes will hopefully be done today, and then buffing can begin. Should be crated this weekend, and ship on Monday hopefully! :) I'll post more pics as I get them.

Okay, I just got done building a kalk reactor... It took less than an hour including testing, installing, and keeping my son under control. :)
Here it is step by step...
Installing the 3/4x1/2 Threaded Bushing

Installing the JG fitting 1/4 OD x 1/2 MIP

And here's me and my buddy!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1348.jpg
Cost break down...
Water Filter Canister ebay for 8.99 + Shipping
3/4x1/2 Threaded Bushing 1.04 (for 2)
JG Fittings 5.40 (for 2)
Teflon tape (everyone already has)
3/4" PVC already had, but I'll guess it's 2.50???
1/4" tubing 1.82
So that's less than 20 bucks plus the shipping for the canister! Just add a water source and run it to the tank either on a drip or float valve. :)

Slight change of plans... Ordered my pumps and due to the pricing I was able to find, I went with a QuietOne 3000 for my return and a QuietOne 5000 for my closed loop. I've heard they are nearly silent, and I've heard horror stories. I hope they are silent. Just as an FYI, I haven't seen these this cheap anywhere else... http://www.petsolutions.com/Quiet+One+Pumps-I-88350151-I-C-49-C-.aspx

Thanks majikterror! Here's an update, it will certainly help me sleep at night. :)
I've got 3 of 4 sides surfaced and will get the 4th side done as soon as I can. They are glued and screwed to the frame which has also been strengthed. The two back corner walls have had two 2x2's added which are braced with the shell on the outside and the shelf support on the inside.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1384.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1385.jpg
Here's an idea of how everything will be layed out... The chiller will go in the back corner where the back is cut out for circulation, the 10 gallon sump with EuroReef and Quiet One 3000 return pump next to it. The DIY kalk reactor will sit in-front of the chiller which will be fed from the RODI reservoir 2.5 gallon bucket on the 2nd shelf. Next to the bucket is the 18W UV sterilizer and EVC Ballast for the 250W HQI. In the corner is the Quiet One 5000 closed loop pump. Built into the shelf is the power management.

I'll give a break down when it's all done... Money's still going out. :(
Well I guess it's time for another update... Today was crazy, as I had 3 BBQ's to go to, so I only had the morning to work, but it was very productive! I was able to frame up the canopy with 1x2's glued and screwed together with #6 screws and skined with glue and #4 screws. I added bracing to run diagonally to hold the pendant and left the back corner open for easy of moving and to allow for additional circulation. The top will be mostly open other than the 3 triangles for addition support. This thing is very solid, even with just the frame together, I could toss it around without any movement! Okay, Okay, here's the pics!

I still have the doors to build and the inside to seal, same goes for the stand. I already have the veneer, I decided on Maple to match the rest of the furniture in my office. :) Once this is all done, I can stain and trim then get started on plumbing it!

Thanks Neil! Part of me is glad the project is getting close to the end, but part of me is sad. This has been a real blast planning, designing, and finally building. Don't want to let anyone down by dragging my feet, but gosh, once it's full of water, what will I get to use my power tools on? :)

Status update: I was able to cut most of the small trim pieces from solid maple, veneered the stand and canopy and started to install the trim. I need to get a little more wood for the larger trim pieces, and make the doors. I'll take some pics tomorrow with hopefully more visible progress.

By corner I assume you are meaning the front corner and that's not the viewing area to me.
I did it this way for multiple reasons. I wanted to have 2 viewing side instead of just one not to mention make the tank bigger. Let me explain... If I went with a corner pentagon, 24x24x20 and chop the front corner off, the tank would only be about 25 gallons... When I designed the tank, my intention was to put this in the corner of my (home) office right between my desk and my couch which forms an L. With two viewing side I can look at the tank from my desk, and from my couch. If I did what you said, I wouldn't be able to see anything when seated (I'm lazy and do a lot of it :) ). Besides, who wants to see the same thing day in day out. With two viewing sides, the tank will appear different just moving from my desk to the couch or vice-versa.

Here's the stand with the doors just sitting in the frame... The doors still need to be veneered and trimmed but it should give you an idea of the look.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1414.jpg
Here's the trim that will go around the base of the tank/top of the cabinet.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1415.jpg
Here's the canopy with most of the trim on, but lots of sanding to be done... And I haven't started on the doors yet. :(
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1416.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1417.jpg
Zoomed in on the front top corner of the canopy.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1420.jpg
Okay, so 4 more pieces of trim to install, and then I can focus on veneering and trimming the doors for installation. Once it's all sanded I can get started on the stain.

Time for an update I guess... Sorry I didn't get it done today, I spent the first 3 hours today building a CL (Q1 5000 W/ Squirt) for my Dad's 75 gallon. He was sick of his MJ's falling off the glass. :(

As you can see, the doors are cut and veneered, but I'm still working on the trim for the doors. I still need to cut, veneer, and trim the canopy doors, but today was lots of sanding for the canopy. :)
Here's part of the trim for the doors.

Thanks Kris! I don't know if patience is a talent though; really that's all it takes. :) I've got some small projects, like selling my 23 gallon nano, painting the office, staining and sealing the cabinet and canopy, building some shelfs, and what ever else my wife thinks up, but I hope to have the tank up and going as soon as I can. (This weekend if we can get our butts in gear...) :)

Sorry everyone, been busy getting my 23 gallon emptied and cleaned up to sell. That should be gone tonight, so I'll have the time and money to get this baby finished. Unfortunately all I've gotten done since Saturday is the left door trim. I still need to do the right door trim and then I can start the canopy doors and trim.
I should have some updates either tomorrow or Friday. :)

I'm getting ansy just wiating to see how it turns out and it isn't even my tank!
Makes me sad. I'm planning a plain ol' 40 breeder with a 1" and 3/4" bulkhead. No where near as fun or neat as yours!

Hmmm, not sure what to say here, but trust me, I've got lots more God in my life than money... Remember I've sold 2 tanks including setups, plus all the live stock to cover just the setup costs of this one.

Almost forgot last night I also covered the entire top of the stand with neoprene (mouse pads from work ) Just taped them all together (from the bottom) to form one big black mat and now the tank is perfectly padded.

As for an update, I finished the trim on the cabinet doors, attached the canopy doors and finished the trim on them as well. All that's left is to do a little sanding, and then just rub poly over the entire thing! I test mounted the HQI Pendant and I think it will be perfect. Once the canopy and cabinet are done, I can solidify the plumbing and start installing all the equipment. The ozonizer is on back order for at least another week, and I'm headed to Europe for vacation on the 21st, so it looks like it will be Nov before water is added. :( Sorry everyone, but like everything good in this hobby it happens slowly. :)

I was completly lost on your plumbing concept. Until I saw the pics, I kept wondering why you would have all of that PVC in the display. That is an awesome looking setup. Very well thought out.
I need to keep saving...

Sorry, I've been slacking on getting poly on the cabinet. The last week has been spent working on a website for the family... I'm headed to Europe next Friday and I don't want to leave this baby sitting full of water with some one who knows nothing at the helm. On the bright side, I got all my loc-lines setup, it looks like medusa in there with 10 different return lines!

I'm thinking/hoping it won't be a factor... There are not any fans, but the back of the chiller is open to the outside of the cabinet...
Alrighty... Time for another update!
Plumbing is finished, Ozonizer is hooked up, UV Sterilizer it out (at least for now) and first 15 gallons are in. So far so good!

Don't worry if you can't tell where the plumbing goes, I can't either and I just finished it. :)
Here my rack for my rock and to keep the closed loop from becoming a suction of doom for any inhabitants. The top of the PVC has been drilled with tons of holes to keep the suction to a minimum.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/calvin415/DSCN1479.jpg
I installed some locks on the canopy doors to keep them closed tightly (keeps any light from escaping and screwing up the view :) ) They are opened my using a magnet to release the lock on the inside which is covered in plastic to keep from rusting.

The tank will be cycling for about the first month, then if all my parameters are stable then I'll be adding SPS's. Mostly Acro's maybe a Monti here or there, and a clam or two...

The tank is now full of RO/DI (48 gallons with sump and overflow box).
My Q1 5000 is really loud for some reason, my Dad has the same pump for his CL and it's so silent... Might be sending this one back for a new one.
Salt will go in once I'm happy with the noise level, and then I'll try to get the sand added as soon as I get my butt to the store to buy some.

Thanks chocolateblnt! LOL!!! I too love the American DJ Power Center, it's so nice to just flip a switch, empty the skimmer cup and then just flip a switch to turn it back on. :) The ATO is very simple... It's a bucket that hose feeds to a float valve... When the water level is high enough is closes the valve (very similar to a toilet) and when the water level drops the valve opens allowing water from the bucket to flow in filling it back up. I have a DIY Kalk reactor plumbed in the middle of the line so the RO/DI water in the bucket actually feeds the Kalk reactor and then Lime water is used for Top Off. Been using the same setup on my Dad's 75G for months and it's worked great!
Let me know if you have any other questions, would love to help any way I can.

I'll try to post some pics tonight! I've got the water in, the salt mixed, the sand bed 1-2 inches thick, and most of the sand cloud settled... I need to go through my rock that's been cooking for the last 3 months and see what I want to use. So I might have rock in there as soon as tonight as well.
Stay tuned...

Thanks peecook, I'm thinking of pulling my chiller out of the stand though, just not enough circulation for it with the doors on. My Q1 5000 is still clicking too much... I'll probably call the retailer today or tomorrow to start that ball rolling...
Anything think if I move the chiller out, what I should/could put in it's place? CA Reactor? 2 part CA/Alk with dosing pump? Bigger Kalk Reactor? Refugium? Leave it empty?

I really really like your rock work! I like how you can't really tell there's an arch when looking at it "straight" on, and the different views you get from either side of the tank. I think it will definitely be a tank you want to check out from many angles.
I don't have any experience stacking LR, but just make sure the support for your arch is solid. I'd hate to see that crashing down because something crawled under it in the sand or something else unexpected.
I'm excited to see this after you get some corals and give them some time to grow out - there is plenty of room at the top and I think you've got the rock at the right height.

I hired Scott with Aquatic Systems Design to build mine, but you can get Acrylic at any local plastic supplier... Check you local phone book for plastics. Shop around you'd be surprised at how prices change from dealer to dealer. You can also look at www.delviesplastics.com to see how prices compare. If you need pieces 48x48 or smaller they can ship it UPS to you.

I hate to be the tang police because recently I got scolded by the scallop police but you might want to consider getting appropriate fish you can keep in your aquarium ... even though it's small even small tangs swim miles with their schools a day. For the bio load of a yellow tang you can get 2 other cool nano fish. Of course I can't make you do anything but I hope you reconsider your fishy!

Thanks again Zach for the extra live rock and for being the first person (other than family) to see the tank! ChocolateBLNT it was more Tonga rock so that other piece looks better now. :) I'll snap some more shots in a bit...

A Sun coral would look great tucked back into the cave, with the pillar being covered in sweet zoos.

Thanks Chelsey! I don't have a stock list because I'm still trying to figure it out... I'm open to all kinds of ideas right now, the latest one I heard was a few cardinals to school along with a few colorful gobies and wrasses. If you have some sweet ideas I'm listening. :)

What corals do you plan to keep? Tigahboy and Melev have tanks with Seahorses...perhaps you could do a seahorse/pipefish reef with a few small gobies or something :)
calvin415
11/14/2005, 06:23 PM
I'm sick of clowns... Everyone who see's them, "Oh you have Nemo!" so sorry, no more NEMOS! :)
I'm thinking a couple Fairy Wrasses, 4 or 5 Bangaii Cardinals, a Blenny and a few gobies including 1 or 2 shrimp/goby pair... Too many fish? Just one Wrasse? 3-4 cardinals?

For an SPS reef, I would say thats a pretty heavy bioload. Heck, even for softies thats pretty heavy! I mean, thats 11 fish in a 40g!(I counted the few and couple as 2 each)
Keep it light. Less work and trouble for yourself in the long run.

calvin415,
just wondering if you like the quiet ones. I am in the process of setting up a 37 gal. oceanic. I also want to do a closed loop. I had a LFS tell me the Eheims pumps are quiet but want to get feed back on other pumps. I am sure I could use the same size pumps you are using since our tanks are close in size. Thanks for all your help.
calvin415
11/15/2005, 12:40 AM
Floppyfish- No problem bro. :)
Laffinlin- If you get a quiet Q1 pump, yes they are great! If you get one that makes noise, then it's a typical water pump... I was planning on sending my Q15000 back for a new one, but I think I'm just going to keep it. It's not silent like the one I installed on my Dad's CL, but it's tollerable... Certainly worth a try and www.bigalsonline.com has the best price on them by far!

Diatoms have started... I'm shutting off my light for the next week to try to keep it controlled.
Did my first tests last night,
SG 1.025
Ammonia just a trace,
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Ph 8.3
PO4 0.0
Ca 350
Alk 8.4 DKH
Mg 1350
I've got my Kalk reactor going so hopefully that will help the Ca and Alk levels.

Tested my water again last night, I can't believe it, no ammonia, no nitrite, and just a trace of nitrate... Guess it pays to cook your rock! Although I would have thought cooking the rock would have kill the aptasia, nope instead it's spread all over...
Hired some peppermints to do some killing. :)

Soon soon... I added 2 firefish today, a red and a purple. The purple is amazing, instead of having a white body it has a yellow body, just incredible! I'll try to post some pics once they come out of hiding... The other gobys (Randall and Yellow Watchman) will hopefully be here next weekend. As soon as I start to see coraline growing, I'll start adding the acros. :)

Hey calvin, I haven't checked out your thread in a month, and wow, nice job. I know what you mean with the clowns, I too feel the need to be different. But in a 29, my options were somewhat limited. I ended up with two clarkii clowns, which look different than the standard nemos, yet are hardy, peacefull, and playfull. I Would suggest clarkii (s) for your stocking, or a wrasse, or some cardinals like you said. That in addition to you firefish would fill your tank, imo.

Okay. :D Hey I've got some ideas for your canopy/base combo, I'll try to get some drawing done up tonight. Just give me a call when you can get away from work so we can go look at different woods/prices/stains/paint and see what you what to do...

Hmmm... I've got 2 blue torts, 1 blue Maxima clam, a green/turquoise acro, Idaho grape (or at least a purple monti cap) if I want to get a frag, and a pink birds nest. I don't think I'm going to want the digitat's back or a green slimer, but I plan to buy about 10 more acro frags.

Not a definate yet, but I thinking it just won't look right in a nano because of the long branches and long branches cast long shadows... I just really want to have corals that are not very common since I have limited space but we'll see what kind of budget we have after todays little issue... ;)

Okay so I decided to sell my UV sterilizer, figure I'll offer it to those who have been following this thread first before posting it in the Used Equipment forum. :) It's a 15W Aquanetics UV sterilizer, I bought it used, but I was told it has a new bulb (only used for 2 months) so it should be great... I don't have room to add it to this setup, so I'll take the first reasonable offer. :D

J.K. LOL!!!
I'll get some more in this month, things are just tight and trying to balancing Christmas and now an accident this weekend (wife slid on the ice driving on Saturday).. Beside best things come to those who wait, I mean come-on it took 3 months to build, I don't plan to have it stocked any faster... :)
