Okay, this may sound really ignorant but do the blue maximas require more lighting than the gold ones?

Both gold and blue T. Maxima require intense lighting. They each have a different colour pigmentation.

Thanks Barry!
I'm trying to get it into my mind what these animals need and I'm afraid I'm getting confused here!
Sometime in the future I'd like to set up a 50g clam tank with the various species in it. I'm trying to picture where the different kinds of clams would need to be placed within the tank.
In some ways, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to use the eggcrate stands to place the clams on rather than LR. (Although I would have some LR in the tank, but mainly the rock would be used for bolt holes for some firefish, a sixline wrasse, maybe a royal gramma).
How do you guys do this?

browsie,

You would enjoy a clam tank but given that I would recommend some MH as then your clams would get the proper lighting needed for Tridacna Clams.

The fish you listed would do well. The sixline wrasse is a clams best friend. :)

I would go with LR and place T. Maxima, T Crocea in the LR and leave the T. derasa and T. Squamosa on the substrate.

Yeah, I've come to the conclusion that MH is the only way to go with clams.....
there goes more money!;)

I wish this hobby wasn't so addicting!

Yeah, but you will save money in the long run as you won't lose some beautiful clams due to lighting. :)

FWIW, I keep all my clams directly on the sandbed without problems. No worries about the clam jumping behind the live rock and being lost.
