Assuming that this is a mantis.. the total lenght of it is about 1" give or take a hair... How old would it be? and how quickly do they mature ?

I second the pistol shrimp. It’s good generally. They can rearrange your rockwork though.

I posted this thread up in the new to the hobby section before here and they are saying its a thalassinid ..harmless. anyone one else want to cast a vote :)

hmm, never seen one of those before, but it does look a lot like a thalassinid also. Do you ever hear clicking noises from your tank? I don't know about thalassinid, but I have a pistol shrimp and it can be heard across the room.

Oh I have a clicker alright. this little guy isn't responable for that though. I have seen lil red streak in my rocks on occassion.. I really want to catch that lil bugger but as so far he is far to smart and or not very hungry

It does look alot like a pistol, but they usually have one claw quite a bit bigger than the other don't they? It's difficult to tell from that photo.
Definately not like any mantis I've seen.
