Donor: Pulsing Xenia

It grows well under VHO or PC. Will not pusle if pH is below 8.3 - I will try and post a picture of this type.

I will have 2 cuttings of a Xenia that will be ready for the next meeting. If you are interested in being a sponsor please provide the sign up below.

OK heres the contract:

Each will be small, but will grow under VHO or PC. (MH may be too intense).

Each is free to a member of the club providing that.....

They provide the correct environ for it to grow.

They are at the next meeting to receive a colony

They describe how it grows for them under their conditions, and what those conditions are.

They promise that once they are twice the size they are now, they will donate a colony the approximate size of the original donor colony.

If you wish to be a sponsor....reply to this list. First come first served. The next people on the list will receive frags from the sponsors when the colony has doubled.

I'm new to reef-keeping, but would love to try a start of xenia. I've got a 2.5 gal nano reef on my desktop at work that I've kept since January 2005. I do 10% water changes weekly with "Real Ocean" water from Petco. I buy it 5 gallons at a time and the box says it's pH is ~8.3

Currently my tank pH tests out at about 8.3

The color scale on my test kit goes from 8.2 to 8.4. It looks closer to 8.2 than 8.4, but it's definitely between the two.

I have 18 watts of PC lighting (9 watts Actinic Blue, 9 watts 10,000k). It's new lighting that's only been on there about 2 weeks.

I've also added (about a week ago) a homemade automatic water topoff/nurce to help alleviate salinity fluctuations due to evaporation. I have a refractometer on the way so I can monitor salinity more closely/conveniently than I was able to with my floating hydrometer.

I'm not currently a member of OMAS, but was planning on attending the next meeting and joining at that time (providing I can make it to the next meeting, I haven't seen a posting yet for when/where it will be.).

I'll gladly abide by the other conditions of the contract: donating half the xenia after it has doubled, giving an update on how it grows under my conditions, etc.

I've had some people tell me that my tank's too small for pulsing xenia, that it would outgrow the tank pretty quickly. That may be true, but I'd like to try it. If it does prove to be that big of a pain to maintain in such a small tank, then that would be a good excuse to either go ahead and start a larger tank at home, or convert the 10 gal freshwater tank on my desk to salt.

Let me know if this sounds acceptable to you. If not, that's fine too.

It seems like fine conditions. The "people" are only somewhat right in what they say. The Xenia spp will be fine in there, but at the rate that they grow, serious trimming will have to ensue. But that's okay since it is on the frag program, someone else will get your trimmings. After you join at the next meeting, you can add your name to the list. Hopefully that will be soon.

Hey Keckles and Oddballs, Do you know if you two can accept OMAS membership fees? I don't know if this is "legal" in the club or not. If so, mmcquay, you might want to see if you can join before the meeting.

I put my name on the want list. My xenia has taken a beating the past few months from various blooms and tank moves. They are still alive, but they don't look so hot. They could give up living any day.

mmcquay, under your lights, it will not grow that fast at all. For the runaway growth people talk about, you need VHO or MH.

Mine does grow exceedingly fast..i cut it out and generally throw it away, I use it to export nutrient like you would do with algae in a refugium.

The "mother" colony was given to me by about 2 months ago and it has approximately quadrupled in size in that time growing under 260W of PC light in my 55g.

I wouldn't call it "runaway" growth, but at least fast enough that I can share what was given to me fairly quickly.

I think it would be fine in your little nano. The frags are about the size of a golf ball when shrunk down, and double in size when open and pulsing.

Promise me you'll join OMAS and I'll make sure you get one at the next meeting.

Went by Reef Revolution on Friday and paid my dues to join OMAS. So I guess I'm a member now or will be when the money finds its way to the club officers. :)

Just a note on how fast these things grow:
The frags that I passed out at the meeting were cut 2 weeks ago. The day of the meeting I went back and checked on them. They had already almost doubled in size, so I cut them down again. The frags that I gave out were cuttings of the cuttings :)

So that means that I have a couple more frags to offer.

To those of you who think that your tank might not be old enough, or stable enough, try one! I think you'll be surprised.

Besides.... the pulsing in hypnotic!

Growing conditions:

I got my frag on 10/25.
I have it in a 10 gallon nano with a 20" Orbit compact flourescent fixture. This fixture actually has 4 different tubes with 4 different spectra. There's a 6700K and a 10000K (the daylight tubes) and a 420nm and a 460nm (the actinic tubes). It also has lunar lights and I've got it on a timer that turns the daylight/actinic lights on
from 7am to 7pm, then runs the lunar lights from 7pm to 7am. Total light is 80watts (40 daylight, 40 actinic). I recently ran across a page in Anthony Calfo's "Book of Coral Propagation" that said not to count actinics when calculating your watts per gallon. Using that rule, I've got about 4 watts per gallon.

To sum up:
10 gal nano
40 watts daylight 6700/10000K
40 watts actinic 420/460nm
lunar lights
pH 8.3
ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates ~ 5ppm
automatic water top-off using a homemade nurce utilizing a 3 liter applejuice jug.
salinity 1.0225

So far, so good, naterd1976! I guess I had a run of bad luck with my others. Both of them are doing good. The one in my refugium isn't doing as good as the one in my display, but they are both healthy and fine. I chock it up to flow issues.
