Thanks

People use it to help with maintaining the tanks ph, to maintain calcium/alkalinity and sure pickle making :D

really..lol i have never heard this before.. its not toxic to the fish or corals?... how do you guys do it?...

It's Calcium Hydroxide. In large quantities, it could be toxic for your entire tank. When mixed and added properly, it helps maintain calcium, alkalinity, and even PH. Most people add around a tablespoon per gallon, mix and let settle. The next step is to only use the clear water after it settles and drip it into your tank over time. The clear liquid is very hi in PH and if added to quickly, can raise the PH of the tank to toxic levels.

Same as kalk (kalkwasser, limewater) Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime is food grade calcium hydroxide, it can contain some impurities. Lab grade calcium hydroxide does not contain impurities (or at least it shouldn't)
I've used Kent, Mrs Wages and Marks infamous sack-o-powder.
The Kent leaves very little dark undisolved solids. With Mrs Wages I had a considerable amount of dark or almost black small grains in the bottom of my cantainer after a couple months of refilling without dumping it. Marks calcium hydroxide leaves less than Mrs Wages but more than the Kent product.
I've never had problems with any of them so for me it just comes down to price.
Even though I'm running a CO2 reactor I still prefer to use limewater on my tank. Summer it's about half my top-off and usually in winter all my top-off is limewater. The usual amount in my 350 is 3.5g per day.

How do you guys drip the limewater in into the sump. I usually have to add 2 gallons of top-off everynight. I was planning on using a aqua-lift pump. Would that be too fast of a drip? Should I add a pinch valve to the airline to slow the drip? And should I only add at night or should I also add in the early morning?
Thanks

The new stuff is even better....lets not forget the cost too.
I just can't seem to work this deal out. Nobody wasn't to step up and say its ok. We have 800x50 pound bags instock right now. I just want 40.
Thanks for the update Mark...
I knew 2 bags was the right choice. I'm still in good shape.

I bought a box of 12, they all fit in one tidy box. I purchased it about a year ago. and I have maybe , half the cans left.

I started dosing the kalk with my top-off water only at night and in the morning, but it's rasing my Ca and alk more than I would like. I mainly want to use it to keep my ph from dropping after the lights go off. I used 5 tablespoons for 5 gallons of water. I mixed and let it sit for a few hours and mixed again. The water remained milky after allowing it to sit over night. Is that OK?

I use 3 tbs per 5 gallons.
it's a 90G mixed reef, this amount has kept my params fairly level over the past 2 years... I use this mix for 100% of my top-off. Everyone's tank is diff... but i think you can cut down your dose. I'm not even sure if 5 tbs would completley dissolve in 5G.

So the water should not remain milky? I should be able to see the bottom of the 5g jug?. Should I dump out the kalkwater I mixed or just keep adding water to the jug. Also how long do I contiunue adding water to the jug without adding new kalk?
Thanks
If should settle and be clear in a few hours. I never wait to dose though since I'm using a litermeter and I'd have to shut it of. The litermeter breaks the dosage (in my case 3.5G) into small additions 24/7 about every nine minutes.
IIRC Anthony Calfo tells how to use KW as a slurry dumped into the system once a day. That method though risks driving the pH sky high. I don't care for that method because of the extra pump servicing I think will be needed. If you use a lot of KW it can cause a fast build up on the impellers and shafts.

Thanks Cesar, I would cut back on the kalk some. It should be almost clear after a few hours. Milky no, slightly foggy maybe. You can still use it if its not perfectly clear. Some people will reuse the residue in the bottom of the jug, but I always dumped it when mixing a new batch so I knew how much was in it. One thing to remember is that the stuff settles on the sides of the container making the water look milky, just tap on the side to see if that may be your case.
