I hate to speek for another person, but..
"Mit welcher Technik läuft mein Miniriff?"
Translates roughly to "What technology do I use in my tank"..
From the text and drawings it appears to use a total of (10) bulbs.
(5) White "pipes"
(5) Blue "pipes"
Total of 696 watts.
He says t5 Leuchstoff-Rohren. Leuchstoff I assume would be Leuchstoff-Osram bulbs. The Rohren noun means "pipes".. So light "pipes" aka "tubes"..
If anyone needs any more of the site translated let me know.

Thanks again :D :D
to the upcoming questions:
if you look on his website, he runs all T5
Yes.... I use only T5 bulbs!!
what kind of T-5 bulbs are you using?
At the moment
2x54 Watt ATI Aquablue special
2x54 Watt ATI Blue plus
3x80 Watt ATI Aquablue special
3x80 Watt ATI Blue plus
makes 696 Watt
but i'll stock it up to:
2x54 Watt ATI Aquablue special
2x54 Watt ATI Blue plus
4x80 Watt ATI Aquablue special
4x80 Watt ATI Blue plus
makes 856 Watt
I expect better colors with the increased light.
How long has the tank and its inhabitants been established?
The tank is since 2 years a stone coral reef. Before it was a fish/soft coral tank.
Do you feed your anthias often? Do you have an auto feeder for them?
No...I feed one, up to two times per day (mysis, artemias, cyclop eeze...)
Thats a truly BEAUTIFUL tank, should be a tank of the month!!!
That would me make very happy.....let's go...vote, vote, vote:dance: :bounce1:  :bounce2:  :bounce3:

Spectacular!
What method do you use for your phosphate control?
Hi Steve
with bacteria and bactofood in combination with the DSB, phosphate is not a problem. Sometimes I use rowaphos (If the phosphate is higher then 0.02mg/l)
Creetin
11/03/2005, 06:55 AM
bacteria and bactofood
Never heard of those. Is it the same stuff used in zeo?
Very nice btw!
creetin
Zeo also use bacs and food (in combination with zeoliths and the zeoloith filter)
The bacs wich i'm using probably have same specifications (denitrification + nitrification)
I'm using as filter media:
LR
and DSB

For your T5s, are they running on individual reflectors or one single reflector?
The Lance
11/03/2005, 11:15 AM
You have my vote!!!
@ Lance
thank you very much :D
@szesteve
Now i have independent reflectors for the 54 Watt bulbs and one single reflector for the 80 Watt bulbs.
With the new light-system i'll also have single reflectors for 8x80 Watt bulbs (i hope, that I recieve the new ATI power module in the next few days)

I need to make the time to read that site. I was raised in Switzerland when I was a kid and know German, but it has been a while since I've had to use it. And technical German is must harder for me than the conversational kind I used.
I just looked at his water quality test results. His pH is averaging 8.0 for the most part. http://www.hausriff.ch/24181/50401.html

I may have to re-think using MH / T5's and go all T5s, I really love the (shimming) effect over the water wth the MH...
Shawn
Hello together
I like to answer the appeared questions:
I may have to re-think using MH / T5's and go all T5s, I really love the (shimming) effect over the water wth the MH
I haven't regretted the step to T5.
I have been missing the shimming light of MH only briefly. The remaining positive effects have immediately convinced me.
No Calcium reactor?
I use a calcium reactor.
However, unfortunately, I can thus only partly compensate for the calcium consumption.
Per day the corals use up to 40 mg/l . This means for about 320 mg of calcium/day !!!
I in addition work with the Balling methodHow long is your photoperiod? Do you run the blue+ bulbs a little longer than your aquablues?
My lights time:
09.00 - 10.00 blue light
10.00 -- 22.00 full light
22.00 -- 23.00 blue light
23.00 -- 07.00 moonlight (LED)

Hallo Iwan

I actually understood 95% of that. :D
For those that are curious, the first poster was commending him on a gorgeous tank and for him not to be surprised if half the (nation? world? hobbyists?) showed up at his doorstep, and that they'd have to take a number to gain access to the house.
Iwan replied that he's very happy to share his tank with others so they can see it too, as he puts a lot of time and energy into his tank to get the best results possible.

Where in Switzerland are you? We're heading there next summer. I spent a couple weeks around Interlaken a few years ago and last year my wife and I took a train from Munchen to Lake Como and made a few stops there. She made me promise I'd take her to spend some time in Switzerland and I said yes. ;-) I'd really like to see the tank.

How long have you been in the hobby, and how long has this tank been set up?
Can you give me the link to your list of livestock?

Thank you very much. It makes me happy!
How do you acquire your corals? Are there saltwater fishstores in Switzerland, or do you have to order everything online?
I sold some corals in seawater stores in Switzerland and Germany.
60% of the corals are layers of friends
Most corals have increased their volume by 200-300 %.
How long have you been in the hobby, and how long has this tank been set up?
I do the hobby since 2 years
Can you give me the link to your list of livestock?

That is intersting how you change your T5 bulbs at 6 to 8 months, rather than running them as long as 18 months. That has been the sellling point here in the U.S. that you can run these bulbs so much longer and save money.
Why do you choose to change them so much earlier? And other hobbyists in your area are doing the same thing, or do they wait longer?
@ melev
I know the marketing argument that T5 lights are up to 3 years utilizable.
T5 lights can burn for a long time but the loss of the spectrum is too heavy for a stone coral keeping after around 9 months.
Bernd Mohr has described 1999/2000 the effect. After 9 months the growth stagnated. After a change of the lights the corals grew again very well. I know these for all T5 users change their lights in the interval from 6-11 months.

Iwan, really awesome. I do surf European reefing sights every now and then and I notice many Europeans use a "part" of the zeovit method - but not the whole thing, then use other similar bacterial foods but not Zeo. Am I reading your method correctly thats what you do also?
Here in the states many reefers seem to discourage Zeovit, or similar methodology. It intimidates me, I'm really trying to figure out what parts I like and what parts I don't like. Can you PLEASE elaborate on how you thing this part works (because it obviously works). Its hard to get solid information over here. But I've been thinking of using some parts - but not sure about the entire Zeovit plan.
Also I notice you use ROWAphos and I thought this was discouraged with these type programs?

Shawnts106, I am not telling you what to do or not to do... But if you have not done research into T5s then I would suggest that you do to make sure T5s will work for you... As with everything else they have pro’s and con’s... I am in the process of a 600gal tank and I was tossing around the idea of going all T5s but with my goals and the tank specs, I think that a full T5 setup is not the key... Again I am not telling you what to do or not to do, I am just recommending that if you have not done so already please look at all aspects before you make your decision... It's easy to look at pictures and say I want that but some times you will find its not what your looking for in the long run, also what works for some does not work for others...

Hello David
I know some reefkeeper these work with the same bases like me.
It in principle is all about the following points in the methods:
- diminution of nutrients
- supplying of elements used up
- active diet of the corals
- water change
The Zeovit method is also interesting for me. However, I don't use a zeolit as filter material. Reason: I am very satisfied with the DSB. I cannot prove any surplus nutrients.
I like to explain the effect of the components in my system. Please take into account that this system has arisen slowly. Corals react to fast changes very severely.
DSB:
Central component of my system. Many take place reduction processes in the DSB. The nutrient content is reduced and kept deep.
Zeostart2:
Reduce phosphate and nitrate. Carbon sources as a food basis for the bacteria are contained in the product.
Amino acids:
serve for the diet of the corals. The state of health can be maintained. Increase the polyp picture
CoralVitalizer:
Corals food. Contains mike and macro components. The water isn't charged by nutrients. The polyp picture increases.
Trace elements:
The trace elements used up replace.
Phytoplankton:
living plankton cells serve the diet of Micro organisms, mussels, sponges, corals polyp, zoo plankton. The plankton cells also have a metabolism and support the breakdown of nutrients.
Bacteria:
Selected bacteria cultures for the receipt of a healthy bacterium population. Basis for the breakdown of nutrients.
Bacterium food:
Carbon source for the increase of the bacterium population

Someone finally said the "Z" word. These results seem typical of the Zeovit method. All too often you see incredibly colored acro's growing like weeds in Zeovit tanks.

Thanks for the info, I have done some research after this post and I am not to sure now about doing all T5s... the watts just arent their compaired to say .. VHOS
I think I will stick to VHOS and MH ..... the T5s are nice, and I may do a small tank with all of them
By no means did I mean to say Iwans way is the only way..... Of course not.... I just simply meant that the tanks is very beautiful and he has obveously had some bit of success with this lighting :)
hope this clears everything up, I hate to cut so short theres alot I would like to say, but I need to rest, I got into a very bad car accident today, am lucky to be alive, and I am full of pain medication so I need to go rest.....
So I think I will...

Wooow Iwan, you have one stunning tank, congratulations. Amazing colors!!!
I am curious about three things.
- Everything looks allright in your tank. Why do you want to add 2 more 80 watts bulbs? Do you think that your present ilimunation isn't strong enough or you are expecting a better growth and better coloration after adding the new bulbs?
- Your tank is 60 cm high and you have some SPS corals close to the bottom. Do you think that your curent lighting will be good enough for soft corals, mushrooms and LPS corals that need lower light than SPS's if they are kept close to the bottom - lower 10-30 cm- in a 70-80 cm high tank? May T 5 HO's provide enough penetration up to 70 cm depth for these guys?
- I saw the pictures of some SPS tanks running with zeovit. One of them was a stunning Italian tank running with only 10 K MH's without actinics. Despite that actinic bulbs effect SPS coloration alot even when they are used with 20 K bulbs the coloration in that tank without actinics was amazing. It is obvious that low or zero nutrient levels increase SPS coloration and growth alot. But as far as i know zeovit is kind of expensive. Nearly a year ago wodka method was discussed in a topic. Wodka method had some points that needed special attention and any failure at these points may cause a crash i think. Are there any points for the bact method that need special attention and may cause a crash because of failure -such as a big protein skimmer, external feeding, dosing etc? Is it an economic way to go or it is relatively cheaper than zeovit? How much do you spend for that bact stuff and how long you can go with it?
Thanks
@ Aquavidis
Thanks a lot.
Everything looks allright in your tank. Why do you want to add 2 more 80 watts bulbs?
The old illumination for certain wasn't bad. I have 160 watts more at the new one. The new technology in addition brings 15-20 % more light again. I expect better colors through this again. Light is one of the most important factors for colored corals.
Your tank is 60 cm high and you have some SPS corals close to the bottom. Do you think that your curent lighting will be good enough for soft corals, mushrooms and LPS corals that need lower light than SPS's if they are kept close to the bottom - lower 10-30 cm- in a 70-80 cm high tank?
This isn't a problem! SPS for certain won't achieve the most beautiful colors at a depth of 70 cm. However, soft corals and many LPSs are provided with light perfectly. Are there any points for the bact method that need special attention and may cause a crash because of failure -such as a big protein skimmer, external feeding, dosing etc? Is it an economic way to go or it is relatively cheaper than zeovit? How much do you spend for that bact stuff and how long you can go with it?
The bacteria method become used also at Zeovit. As an addition you still filter about Zeolithe. The bacteria and the food are similar at the two methods. The pure bacterium method needs a little more time till the positive effects are provable. At Zeovit is the danger that changes arise too fast insists. Reagieren.Wie can on this at every method only with difficulty, the bacterium method also should be used with the necessary portion of patience for corals.
The price for my bacteria method lies with my pelvis approximately at € 6 per week. I in addition put even further ingredients into the water (plankton, trace elements ...)

I was looking at what appears to be a birdsnest coral in your tank
http://www.gentryillustration.com/images/reefcentral/birdsnest.jpg
Will this guy color up or will it stay that color?
The reason I ask is that I bought a similar coral thinking that it was just browned out and would eventually color up to either pink or green. The coral has grown considerably but has not yet begun to color up. I too am running T5's.
BTW your tank is astounding.
This is a variant of the seriatopora hystrix with missing color competence. this means the coral is missing the genetic qualities to train colors. The coral trains pale yellow till brown colors in dependence of the available nutrients. I also have the pink color variant.

How many gallons is your tank? it really nice acropora under t-5's great colors. thanks for sharing
Hello
I like to answer your questionsSo Iwan, what do you think is the major factor in the success of your reef tank, the T-5 lighting, or the bacteria food?
Stone corals need some prerequisites for the development of a good coloring:
- good light quality (good spectrum/large light quantity)
- no surplus nutrients
- a supply with the needed elements
- enough food
- the genetic prerequisite to the colorfulnessThank you for posting such an interesting perpective on "Korallen Farben" on your personal site! It's one of the most educational outlines of the differences between chemical and biological processes behind coloration that I have seen -
Many thanks.
I am pleased that the article opens the sensibility to the needs of the corals.
The article can be found here:
http://www.hausriff.ch/113548/127103.html
In my article I make the following central statements :
The corals have the ability of the color production by the production of chromoproteine (pocciloporine)
We can distinguish striking and flourescent pocciloporine
The corals use the energy for the color production only when they are fed sufficiently.
The light quality is one of the elementary factors for the production of pigments.
Not all corals have the genetic competence for the color formation
A balanced nutrient availability is important.
The colorfulness depends on the following factors:
The quality of the incident light: Light quantity and radiation spectrum
The available nutrients in the water. A high nutrient occurrence causes an increase of the zooxanthels and therefore a covering of the colors
The diet condition of the corals: Corals which suffer from a diet limitation don't use the available energy for the production of pigments
The genetic competence for the color formation. If the genetic competence is missing, you cannot get colored corals. Even under optimal conditions

Well, I'm not sure if you can amino acid directly, but SeaChem's Reef Plus contains amino acid as one of its main ingredient. ReefPlus also used in GARF's bullet-proof system as well.

What is the benefit of T5 bulbs over MH? Is the power consumption less as well? This may sound like a noob question, which I am, but why do you switch from MH to T5? Do you think that T5 gives you better color and growth for your corals than MH?
I have stated the following advantages at T5 in the comparison with MH:
more homogeneous illumination
better coral growth
better coloring
I change the illuminants every 6 months. The costs are like for MH's ( with an annual change)

Which kind of tank do you imagine?
If you would like to have stone corals tank I wouldn't attach the system to a fish tank.
I use in my system a DSB and give bacteria there.
Unfortunately, I don't have direct experience with the Zeovit system.
is 6x 54 watt enough? I have space for only 1 more T5.
Hi Simon,
how are the dimensions of your tank?
I would take one bulb per 6-7 cm (depth).
The watt number depends on the length.
90% of the length should be covered.
I am just curious. Why does the 1st pic look so unusually colorful & the last pic looks more natural. This does have to do with the bulbs used or camera exposure?
In the past, I have taken a photograph with other parameters.
The withe matching of the camera was changed.
The second picture therefore seems more natural.
The new illumination is considerably stronger.
The picture exposure is therefore different.

The articles of Prodibio are very good.
It needs some weeks until the first successes are visible.
The bacterias (Bio Digest) and the bacterium food (Bioptim) reduce the nutrients to a minimum.
Reef booster provides the corals and microorganisms with important amino acids and vitamins.

I bough Biodigest, reef booster and biotrace rather than bioptm was that a mistake?
I couldnt find bioptm on any of the websites. The bioclean pack had biotrace included, so I bought that as bacter food.
Have I made a mistake?
Many thanks

@ Simon
Bioptim is the latest product.
Biotrace will be for fresh water and Bioptim for saltwater.
The difference lies in the trace elements.
But no problem: I also use Biotrace

Have you or any of your fellow T5 reefers ever experimented with overdriving the T5 lamps on Ice Cap ballasts?
I assume your ATI luminare has individual reflectors for each lamp. Is that fixture for the 80 watt lamps? I have measured PAR of the ATI reflector against the Sunlight Supply Tek reflector which is also parabolic. The ATI provided nearly 20% more light at the sandbed than the Tek reflector. If you went from a flat reflector to the ATI unit and increased the number of lamps your corals must really love you now.
Have you experienced and bad effects from the increase in light?

IWAN, What ADDITIVES or PRODUCTS do you recommend using for SPS health if you have a BAREBOTTOM REEF (NO DSB). Many of us have changed to barebottom so that we can increase water flow. The Grim Reefer,
Where in US can you get ATI light fixture? I like the idea of ATI gives out 20% more light at the botton of the tank compare to TekLight, but I just can't find a US retailer sells it. When I called Reefgeek.com, they told me that ATI has been out of business for almost a year now and the only thing that is left over from ATI must be older stocks. Or, did you simply get the ATI t5 reflector?
Iwan,
Did you get your new ATI T5 ligth fixture online? Can you give me a link? I hope I can find a US retailer for it.

www.aqualuxlighting.com has what they call the "computer designed" T5 reflector which is the ATI (at least that is what the owner said, if not they are a duplicate). It wasn't quite as good as the Ice Cap but close.
I don't think you can get the ATI in the US. I have heard they are no longer exporting here.

ATI uses individual reflectors.
The light extraction is thus better than at area reflectors.
The latest ATI lamps have ventilators to the cooling of electronics and the bulbs.
The performance is improved so again.
Light is the most important factor besides the water quality for colored and healthy stone corals.
The formation of Chromo proteins (pigments) by the coral increases with the available light quantity.
I haven't made any bad experiences with the reinforcements of the light intensity.
I haven't made any bad experiences with the reinforcements of the light intensity.
The corals must be accustomed to the new conditions.

The same as for a DSB.
The bacteria don't work only in the sand.
A DSB offers much settlement substratum.
But also LR are ideally suitable as settlement substratum.
The following additions are always suitable:
- Bacteria
- Bacterium food
- Amino acids
- Coral food
- Phytoplankton
- few trace elements
- much water change (10% by week).

The "gull wing" shape of reflector design is not unqiue in www.aqualuxlighting.com. I have ordered two brands (AquaConnect and Bresslein) of reflector from German before and both have the same design. I suppose this design is common in Europe market.

I've seen that reflector design on ATI, D&D, and Coral Vue units. I don't know who actually makes the reflector, I was told ATI. It could be just like the lamps, They are just branded ATI but made by a different company. My ATI and D&D lamps that were actually labeled were made in Ecuador.
Maybe you guys overseas know something more on the lamp situation, A guy posted on RC that ATI and the company that had been making their lamps (Narva) had a parting of the ways and those lamps were going to be marketed under a new name from a different company. I was wondering if D&D was still going to be able to get the lamps.

Sorry to but in on your thread Iwan - but the T5 issues is important given your world class achievements with them:cool:
Both ATI and D&D Deltec bulbs, reflectors and retrofit ballasts are still available on european suppliers web sites, so far so good. Infact another world class T5 tank - dannano RC TOTM in March or May now features on the ATI web site as an example of what can be achieved, whereas D&D Deltec use the tank that inspired Iwan as thier example.
Now that there is irrefutable evidence that T5s are at least equal to MH, and they all use the same tubes, I guess market forces will ensure there will always be a supply of these bulbs - whoever the distributors are - as more and more convert.

To what I know, the T5 contract between Narva and the new company (Fauna Marin) is not exclusive. And so Narva is still supplying T5 to D&D and Giesemann. But if ATI is not going out of business, they need to source another T5 manufacturer. We may not certain how would be the quality of the new T5 compared with their old supplier Narva. BTW, Fauna Marin will be available in January in German stores.
