Hi All,
I'm starting this thread to chronicle the progress of my new 220 gal semi-custom tank.
Here is the equipment list so far:
Lee-Mar flat-polished, euro braced, dual overflow 220 gal glass tank (Due in about 3 weeks)
6 holes drilled for a closed loop
30" oak stand and 12" canopy (Due in about 3 weeks)
OceansMotions 4-way (No ship date yet)
Sequence 1000 Series 3200 return pump (Due 11/14)
Sequence ReefFlow Dart closed loop pump (Due 11/14)
PanWorld 150PS skimmer pump (Due 11/14)
Barr Aquatic SK1220 Beckett skimmer (Due soon)
Barr Aquatic CR1200 calcium reactor (Currently in use)
Lighting - TBD
I'll take suggestions on this. I'm looking at DE HQI systems 13-14K bulbs.
More will follow along with pics as things progress.

Hi again.
Some minor changes and some observations.
I'm only having 5 holes drilled for the closed loop. One 2" drain, and 4 1.5" returns.
The canopy will be 16" instead of 12" so I can raise and lower the lights.
The pumps arrived on time, and the OM 4-way arrived today.
The OM 4-way is beautifully made. Excellent fit and finish, and the company was a pleasure to work with.
The Sequence 1000 is HUGE. I can only imagine how big their larger pumps are. I'm hoping this doesn't cramp me for space under the stand. I'm going to have to size the sump appropriately.
The Dart and Pan-World are about the size I expected and also look very well made. I know some of the early Darts had the clear-blue volute which were prone to cracking. The new black PVC volute looks very sturdy.
I also can't believe how much the plumbing parts are going to cost. :eek2: It's just plastic guys!
I'll start posting pics once the tank and stand arrive. The projected date is the 1st week in December.

Thanks "Z." I gotta ask, 350, 240, what? I've got an '04 Max.
I agree about Brent's equipment. Sounds like he's taken on an apprentice, so things should start ramping up, reducing lead times.
I forgot to mention that I ordered an Aquatronica controller, which may arrive this week from Aquarium Obsessed. Definitely by next week.
I also just received my lighting. I decided on 2 Reef Optix III Plus pendants, 250 watt 14K Phoenix bulbs, and a Blue Wave VII ballast. I test fired them and all was well. A nice pleasing blue. They should look great. Thanks ReefGeek.com.
I should also be receiving my Savko order soon.
I'm still shopping for a sump. I really like Melev's 80 gal model. I'll have to wait and see if that size will fit, or if I'll need to scale it down a little.
I will say that all of the vendors I've chosen have been great to work with. Thanks MarineDepot, CustomAquatic, BarrAquatic, ReefGeek, OceansMotions, and AquariumObsessed. Quite the Canadian contingent Eh!

Is the Sequence 1000 on the same floor as the tank? I had a dart as my return pump and a 1000 for me closed loop, the flow was so high from the 1000 that I had to trade it back in for another dart...my tank is a 240...sounds like a great project...I love my OM 4 way too...and my tank is from Aquarium Obsessed...good luck and keep us posted...you can checlk out my set up as i am working on it by clicking to my website...

camarojweed,
It's on the same floor. On a closed loop with zero head I could see where that would move a lot of water.
I'm looking at about 16' of head with bends and valves and a manifold. I hope this works out.
Very nice setup too. How do you like the light movers?

Best 30 dollars i ever spent...the light rails worked out better than I had hoped...
I am glad I used true unions on the outlet of the pump, it was a quick change out...good luck and have fun...

I received my Barr Aquatic SK1220 skimmer on Saturday. Brent never fails to impress.

That sounds awesome! I saw your other question and I don't think the LeeMar will come with low iron glass unless you pay extra for it. That's pretty weak of the LFS for not being able to give you a clear answer. If its not too late I'd upgrade. Although I think LeeMar's glass isn't as green as some others, its still green. I've had a couple starphire tanks and on my website is a pic of the difference - the sides and front were starphire and the bottom is regular. HUGE difference, ya pay well into the five digits after a tank is up and running, just to color all your livestock green. ;-)

That looks great, I gotta see it in person!
Word of advice though - you should put cheap BV's between the tank and the union on the back of your tank. If you ever want to replumb, you turn the BV's off, undo the unions. I have 4 there, 4 on the outlets of the OM (this time the union is between the tank OM and the BV), one between the OM & pump, and 2 more for the drain (same concept as above). Small investment but makes things easy if (when) you re-do it.

Sounds good, and I wouldn't mind meeting a local "legend."
I think I follow what you are saying about the valves. I will have valves on the OM side (and the drain), but don't think I could reach valves behind the tank anyway. If I have to, I can always cap the pipes in the tank to act as a valve. I don't really plan on re-doing that part of the system. It would only come into play if I have a serious problem.
I didn't post this picture before, but here is the plan:

Hothothot,
I like your OM output jets design. I will have to keep that in mind for the next tank. However, you may want to rethink the overhead jet idea. I tried that same idea with just 4 - 3/4" locline nozzles hanging down and it looks horrible. If you set that up with all 10 jets hanging in the water. I think you may find it to be an uncontrollable eye sore. Thats just my opinion, so take it for what its worth.
Besides that keep the pics flowing.

To be honest, I don't even like the look of loc-line! :rolleye1: but I really had no other adjustable way to do it. They won't be visible when standing due to the overhang on the hood. When sitting, they should be unobtrusive since they'll be only an inch or two below the surface.
Besides, it took me a full day to put that manifold together and by-golly it's gonna work! :D
More pics will follow when the sump is done!

Ed,
I like your perseverance to make your efforts work. I know we all have different tastes. The issue that I am sure you are going to find is that in order to make the jets an effective entity you will need pressure delivered to all the jets. In order to get them all presurized you will have to increase the return flow. The problem that will arrise after increasing the flow is that your overflows will not be able to keep up. If you force the overflows and drains to hard you get a lot of drainage noise and risk a flooded tank.
Good luck with it!

Thanks for the concern. I'm using a Sequence 3200 as a return so I should have enough flow. I also have 1 1/2" Dursos in each overflow and two 1 1/2" emergency drains.
Mitigating potential floods was high on my list. :)
I also forgot to post this pic of the overflows.

nice setup but that shot of the valves makes me dizzy!
It's interesting that you are getting good service from OceansMotions. I couldn't get them to return my emails or phone calls. In fact I have decided not to use CLs or vary my return flow at all. It will be constant through 4 - 1" return BHs and 1 - 1-1/2" overflow from the refugium. All my variable flow will come from power heads. It's too bad about them because I think they make a great product!
I really like your manifold. I have built one myself (a mock up) and got a good idea from yours: Instead f just capping the end, I will install a BV and then a cap, so that I can remove the cap and install other items without shutting down the system. THANK YOU for the great idea!!

I got all the lock line from Savko.com, as well as bulkheads, most of the valves, and the spaflex. Just avoid their sch 40 unions. HD and Lowes for the rest of the fittings and straight pipe.

No, I think there is still some space for livestock! LOL!
I've actually scaled it back to four 1/2" nozzles + the CL. I was getting too much flow and not enough velocity. It's pretty balanced now. I also got rid of the loc-line because I think it was sucking air through a few joints. I went with rigid pvc.
