where should i put it in the tank? on a flat rock or on the sand.

it depends on the species. do some research on them as different species come from different areas on the reef

wow nice articles. i would end up getting the harder species (Goniopora stokesi). but i have a good feeling about it though. maybe 5 min after i placed it in my tank all the polyps were open to about 3 or so inches. i have never had a coral open up the quick in my tank.

One of my 2 Goni's is being host by my tomato clown. It's tentacles never retracted even though the clown is scratching at it.

depending on what kind you get the hardiness of them will vary mine is the crappiest kind to keep however hes the most spoiled in my tank because of its rarity of survival but mine is doing great and has had two babies:)

So where did you end up putting it?

its on a smooth ledge kinda in the middle with moderat to upper moderat water flow.
i just gave it a squirt of DT's phytoplankton and it seemed to have loved it.
i would post a pic but my g/f ran off with my camera this week, just gonna have to wait till this weekend for that.
let me see some pics of other ppls gonis

Rick, thanks so much for the articles. I had the first one..but not the second. That really helped with alot of info..including the scientific name for my species!I am currently looking to aquire Goniopora cf. somaliensis.
Goniopora cf. tenuidens :)

:) anything to try to help keep these things alive. waaaay to
many Goniopora die every year. the sooner we unlock the
secrets to them the better.
i'm not aware of any coral that purposely feeds on phytoplankton.
nematocysts are for capturing live prey.

i just gave it a squirt of DT's to give it a lil kick. this afternoon when im done with my classes i plan on doing some fine chopping of some meaty foods to see if it'll eat that.
what does everyone else feed theirs? (if they do)
also keep the pics comin. can never see too many pics of these guys

Goni's may benefit from some types of phytoplankton, dinoflagellates etc., but I don't believe the commonly available phyto like DT's gives Goniopora much benefit at all; at least not compared to meaty foods.
If your going to use meaty foods, shave it off very finely while it is still frozen (shrimp, squid, scallops, krill, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp....), then mash it a little in a bowl. Feed it directly to the polyps and keep your fish from stealing it. You can also use a tad bit of finely powdered flake food like Formula One (for carnivorous fish) in your mix.
Mashed frozen Cyclopeeze is the best stuff to use.

I feed Cyclop-eeze twice a week and Cyclop-eeze mixed with DT's once a week.

My Goniopora seems to be doing a lot better since I've been supplementing iron weekly. My open brain has benefited from it also.

since goni's are pretty sensitive i wouldn't let the clowns keep trying to host it or it may end up dying on you. my female perc did the same thing so much that the goni withdrew until i took the clown out & put her in a different tank. i would ask jennkerry, i believe they would have good advice about it for you.

It would be interesting to know how much of a difference there is (if any) between having a settled goniopora that is healthy and extending, then introducing a clownfish vs. having a clownfish then introducing a goniopora, which then not only has to acclimate to the water, light, flow, feeding, etc..., but then also has to acclimate to a clownfish or two. :(

Just Poppin' in. As for Phytoplankton feedings most coral don't actually directly eat the plankton. But the zooplankton in the tank does and the corals eat the zooplankton other inverts their eggs and their larvae. I direct feed DT's oyster eggs though and they do indeed eat. I fed my GOniopora nothing but oyster eggs for almost two months with much growth. Cyclop-eeze and other small meaty foods are great too. The smaller the size the better. Hikari frozen rotifers works for most species.
Correctly ID'ing your Goniopora will greatly improve your chance so you may provide a more fine tuned approach to their keep. Goniopora somaliensis can be in quite high flow and light. G. tenuidens i much easier to feed and keep in much lower flow etc...
They come from a wide range of environments from intertidal lagoons, reefs or turbid water and soft substrates.

any idea on the long tentacle green ones location???? also what should i feed him lol
justincognito
11/20/2005, 10:59 AM
Usually those are G. stokesi. Check the bottom and see if it was free living or cleaved of a reef. If it is free living it is most likely G. stokesi. They like moderate, low to medium flow and lots of feeding. Lower flow is much easier to keep them in as you can feed them easier.

yep g stokesi for sure i moved my tank around to a low flow area and feed him lots every day by target feeding should be doing well

ok haveing trouble keeping my clown away from it. its starting to open up a lil more now but its still pretty closed up. but im starting to see where its growing back over the skeliton around the bottom so mi guessing its doing ok. is there any way i can keep the clown away from it?
