I've got only a few colonies of zoos (only been at this for a year) and they are doing so well in my reef that I've started lurking on this board to find out more about them as my fascination grows.

I hardly ever see any all-yellow zoos in people's pictures. Is that because it is very common (sort of like the browns) and people just don't have them or like them very much?

True all yellows are VERY hard to find! been looking for some for almost 4 years now. I've been able to get my hands on every other color I've wanted BUT those pesky yellows.

I got a frag of true yellows from a fellow reefer in MI and they didn't do well in the first month but now starting to grow.. I have about 4 polyps right now.. I'll post some pics when I get the chance..

What about these? a variety of yellows I have but I will get pics of the true yellows with flash...

Well I haven't seen many true yellows however I do have some. And they are VERY slow growers. I'd frag them but the price would be very high but I'd rather them grow out. I've seen maybe 1 polyp grow in about 2 months.

Those are real nice, I had a rock similar to that, but the changed colour in my tank :(

Are your up high or bottom in the tank?

Here are my pure yellows. Picture is horrible but you get the idea. I bought them at my LFS. They were growing in the sand. I have had them for about 4-5 months and have about 15 polyps that started as 5. I didn't know they were so hard to find until I read a bunch of threads about them on here. I just thought they were good looking colorful zoos. Lucky find I guess.

Jay's is the only one that I'd consider true yellow here...

Coralfarm I think yours looks alittle lime from the pic but its really bad so I'm not going to include yours in my above statment :)

I have them low with all my zoos but they are being blasted with 250 watt MH. I wish they grew quicker because I love the color yellow as imho it is one of the rarest colors beside red in a reef tank. I always see purples, blues, oranges, greens.

I think it's impossible to frag these without busting the rock. The polyp is so flat against the rock, I would destroy it trying to razor it off.

Reef Junkie

Wendy,
I saw them at MACNA. They were purty. Yet, not the prettiest zoas I've ever seen. They were just yellow. Now if they were Yellow and Black, Blue or Purple, then that would be a sight!
Cheers,

Jovreefer,

Yeah my camera is only 3 mp and not really great with closups. I might try bringing them to the top to get a better pic sometime, but they are solid yellows. No lime or green color. I need to get one of those nice Canon SLR with macro:)

Jovreefer
11/21/2005, 11:22 AM
Twon- I think yours are a faded EE, definatly no yellow though.

Coralfarm- My boyfriend has a 3 mp sony camra (sadly its better than my 2mp) that I use. I foud it takes better pics if you increase the pic size and stand back alittle and take a pic, then crop the zoa out. Takes me a few pics to get a nice clear one but with paitents it can be done hehe.

I just got some yellows this weekend!!! I'm so excited, I'll have to take pics and post soon :D

Here are my 'yellows'. They actually seem a little more lime in the photos than they do in real life. They are actually a pretty intense yellow (although the disks are really a dark grey).

Someone probably will chime in with the correct name, but those are just regular yellow polyps (not zoos). I can't recall the name but from what I do recall, they will spread like wildfire and can be difficult to get rid of so keep them on their own island.

I think many are posting yellows if they have some in it. Although a few I don't see any. I will say though, if I keep mine down low they turn slightly green. I have to blast it with a ton of light to stay yellow. Maybe that's why we don't see many yellows.

twon8
12/01/2005, 01:37 PM
i believe the yellow polyps are parazoanthids, and thus belong to the family zoanthus.
One source of confusion, where exactly does yellow end and orange begin? Ever seen yellow ochre? is there a wavelength to measure our colors against so that we can be sure and not offend the zoa color police? I hate the police. I have some zoanthids that to me and everyone else who sees them in person have yellow centers. If you don't think it is yellow, fine, but don't insult my vision and zoanthids with what you erroneously believe to be some divinely bestowed zoa color rating authority. Of course that is my opinion, others will differ. How about the ones in the middle? while obviosly not all yellow, I suggest they have yellow centers. In my eyes they do, and they are the only ones i trust.

Those centers do indeed look yellow to me. (the ones above)

I'm not posting here to be the color police. I'm just saying...if a thread is labeled "yellow" that people post pics of zoos that are clearly yellow, not yellow'ish, a fade of yellow that turns into green or orange, but yellow. If they are a different shade of yellow please say that yours are "greenish yellow" or "orangish yellow" instead of trying to pass them off as something they aren't.

I think a good point of reference, as to whether or not your zoo is yellow, is compare them to some yellow polyps, since as Jovreefer pointed out they are very common and everyone has them.

Camera, photoshoping, and monitor color problems should all be looked into if your yellow polyps look green or orange on your screen. Also, turn off your actinics or blue lights while taking a picture of a yellow (kinda like taking pics of brown zoos that appear to be blue under actinics), this might be leading to some color distortion.

I don't know about anyone else, but I look for exactly 570nm when looking for something yellow. j/k

12/01/2005, 02:16 PM
I agree surfnvb, and on my first post i said mine had yellow centers, to which i was told i had faded eagle eyes by jovreefer, whose yellows look lime green to me. I honestly see the last post of mine on the first page of this thread as having yellow centers, close to 570, and know that i wasn't refering to you, the police display their badge.

HaHa twon does not like getting busted for false color naming....decon hemp even tells you in your LAST pic they are not yellow. You can keep pushing your fake colors all you want but people like you are the reason I've become a color police officer :p There orange...there nice...why try to turn them yellow?

Your pic of the orange skirts definatly have yellow centers though and I think they are nice ... looks like something that would come out of those color splatter art wheels. lol see...I'm not out to single you out if your giving them the right color :)

you should show the before picture with that when you post them. i honestly am not sure if they are bleached or not, but you do have some strong 10k's so I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

also, how bout a recent picture of them? not one that is 8 months old.

if that is their true color I have to give that a big

Jovreefer
12/01/2005, 03:37 PM
So what do you think about yourself? you posted the same coral 3 times to get someone to say they were yellow because you knew for a "FACT" that they were yellow...yet no one did. My oppinion that they were orange was backed up by someone else's post... no one else has said they look yellow to them...so are you still stating for a "FACT" that they are yellow?

BTW... I still like you even though you dont like me or aparently crayola  :inlove:

surfnvb, i remember the message, but they are very slow growers, and i don't have enough to frag, and am not sure i ever will. i posted the before and after in a thread in this forum today, but here it is again.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/twon8/Corals/P9300183.jpg
when that picture was taken they were under 15k at the bottom, so i don't think they were bleached. they did come under attack from the red mushroom, and i moved them. they did not like the move and they started to disappear, but they have started to grow back and are regaining most of their color. no photoshop, just and olympus camera and cropping. they didn't have a name when i bought them, just a rock with some zoas. i will take some more pics of them tonight, but of course they don't look as good under the 10k Ive had them about a year and a half, they took about 6 months to get the good color
and here is my last posting of my counterfiet yellow center zoos

lol I agree. It's just a color. However, maybe I'm colorblind but I don't really see any yellow. Maybe my monitor is miscalibrated.

And to poke at the open wound (having harmless fun), to be classified as a people eater, it has to have a green mouth :).

the problem is most yellows end up turning green over time.....

THANKS! :D The skirts were a lime green color when I got them...the prevous person had them under PC's. Then someone mentioned they like higher light so I stuck them up under my halide and they skirts went yellow in about 2 weeks :D The growth also took off like a rabbit! I started with 5 big polyps & 2 new...now I have 12!

I was gonna call them lemon lime's ... but I dunno what to call them now *looks around sheepishly*

While not all yellow, the centers are very yellow, and i'll take the 4+ additional colors instead.

I know this is a little off topic, but what kind of rcok do you have? Did it come with all that coraline algae or has it grown like that?

That piece was fiji from live aquaria with one of their 89 for 45lbs. most of it grew on there. that rock is constantly having things such as the shells you see placed on it, and when they are moved the coralline is gone, but it quickly grows back. Nearly every light exposed piece of live rock is purple. you can see in this pic the line on the top piece( the same one with the orange cap on it) where the coraline stops.
