i just picked up one at the LFS and they said he's reefsafe. But liveaquaria.com said they could eat small shrimp and fish. I have a scooter blenny and a mandarin. What do you guys think?

Put him in there an monitor, if he is small there should be no problem, however if he is grown up then you need to be careful.

That is why you don't just by fish:p

I had to get rid of mine since I liked my cleaner shrimp more and he was attacking my rainford's goby since they are known to go after fish that sit close to the sand.

My hawk was about 1/ 1/2" when he attacked my 3" cardinal and ripped his lip apart. It was terrible. That fish has a very deformed mouth now.
Hawks mean business.
They think they're triggers.

They also think they can fly; keep a cover on your tank.

Great personality on these guys.

yeah they sure have great personalilty. Mine isnt afraid of me. When i stick my hand in the tank he'd come over to investigate. So far he hasnt messed with my mandarin or scooter blenny

Mine loved the peppermint shrimp in the tank. He does not bother the 1" scooter blenny. The hawk is 3" long and eats like a pig. He seems to eat anything offered; flake, pellets, brine, ghost shrimp. Definitely not safe with cleaner shrimp.

I've got a long-nosed hawk with a small (2 inch) cowfish, percula, C. Argi, a yasha haze and a skunk cleaner shrimp. Nobody bothers anybody else except for the yasha haze... he keeps trying to take food away from the hawk and perc!

I erally wanted to have a longnosehawkfish as well but I plan on having at least 5 emerald crabs in my 90 gallon tank and many more hermits and shrimp. Would the longnose have a field day with those crabs?

If so, are there any less aggressive hawkfish out there? Like for instance the Dwarf or pygmy Hawkfish (Cirrhitichyhys oxycephalus)? Would it still be an issue with this fish?

i think all hawkfish are shrimp killer.

I know this might seem a tad bit crazy, but the LFS I go to had a longnose hawkfish in a 10 gallon wall tank with about 10 blood and cleaner shrimp.

The hawkfish was small, about 2", and all the shrimp were at least his size or bigger.

I bought my cleaner shrimp from that tank, and they seem to be okay.

I saw the longnose attacking a shrimp exoskeleton, so he might just eat those when he is hungry.:D

If any of you really want shrimp, my longnosed never bothered my coral banded shrimp. Actually nothing ever botherd it.
