What is your experience with this trigger? Thinking about getting it to put in tank with frogfish and v. lionfish.

They are too mean for those fish. In general they are a bit shy, but they are very aggressive. Most people seem to suggest keeping them by themselves. One member has one with a sulfur or fimbriated moray with success though.

none of the triggers, except perhaps blue throats and crosshatch, can be kept with anglers, and triggers in general are generally not considered a great risk with lions. undulatus triggers are considered among the most territorial, and are often lethal to any tankmates. they are smaller than many of the pugnacious triggers, and are often kept in a relatively moderate sized individual-only tank.

I wouldn't add an undulatus with either of those fish. Their long, showy fins will more likely than not be too tempting for the trigger. I kept an undulatus in a 55g by himself and absolutely loved him. He was a bit shy at first, but it didn't last long. He was out all day rearranging his living space, and swimming up to the tank whenever I came into the room to beg for food. They have some of the best colors of any marine fish, and IMO have the best personality of any saltwater fish I've ever kept. They are really great, but do need some special considerations. Good luck.

Trigger will most likely kill the lion and the frog fish. try a niger trigger instead.

i really like the undulats colors compared to the niger. so you guys don't think it will work in a 120 gallon tank at all?

No,not for the long haul.Get a 70-75GL tank and house the Undy alone. They may be skittish but will not hesitate to come out've it's hiding spot to kill an intruder. Some are not shy as lots are like a scared pitbull, unpredictable.

A friend of mine has one in his 125 with 2 puffers and the undulated doesnt bother either one of them. And is also very shy he has had him in the 125 for about 3-4 months. But who knows things can change his undulated is about 5 inches.

Only thing that i know about undulate that it is a bad *** vicious killer; not so long takes that it will kill your lion or angler!!!
Don't do this; i have an undulate living lonely in 20g and i don't know what to do with it in the future................

Harley I would bet your friends puffers are in serious jeapordy once the Undy is almost a foot long!

i would nix the undulated from your list, the are a mean trash fish, that imo arent attractive enough to devote a tank to. the angler should be kept by himself, and woudl make a really nice specialty show tank. do your main tank around the lionfish and work out from there.

this undulatus trigger seems like a loner, he's such a bully no one wants to play with him.

For about a year I had one w/ a Rock wrasse and a yellow psuedochromis. The wrasse was bigger and the psuedo. stayed behind the rocks and knew them well ;) They are my favorite trigger. Has anyone ever kept one w/ any sessile inverts? I know they enjoy shrimp and crab but I wonder if anyone has tried xenia?!!

From what I've seen, I'd keep this trigger alone or not at all. We've got a big FOWLR at work (LFS, I work there part time to support my habit er... hobby) and tried to keep a ~7" undulated trigger as part of the display. I don't know how many fish she injured/killed before they finally gave up and moved her into the back room. She lived in our (fully cured) LR tank for a while, but it became somewhat hazardous to try and sell LR to customers! Customer: "can I see that piece at the bottom?" Employee: "Sure... OW!! That fish just bit me again!!" Now she lives in a huge sump - the sump is cylindrical and looks a lot like a giant trash can, so we christened her 'Oscar' because she's green, lives in a garbage can, and has a naaaasty temper :D

Trash fish?!? And they "suck?" Wow, that's a shame you feel so harshly about them, kid. I've had a tons of triggers over the years and few fish in the world are more "personable" than an undulated.

One member has one with a sulfur or fimbriated moray with success though.

That was me. It worked fine for a long time until I broke the tank down. The undulated was only around 4" though. The fimbratus was about 18". When I had the undulated in my main tank, he was a terror, chasing my other triggers around and chasing all my fish. He seemed to like my toby puffer though. I would say a puffer or eel would be the best bet for a tankmate. Another member kept one with a V-tail grouper for a while, but I dont know if he still has that going.

Personally, I love Undulated triggers, and my next smaller tank i plan to do will have an undulated with an eel. 90 gallons is sufficient for them depending on the eel.

By the way, triggers and lions dont generally mix. Flashy fins attract the triggers, and after long enough, the trigger will kill the lion, or the lion will string the trigger killing it.
