Hey all:

I know I have seen a thread on this but can not find it.

Does anyone here have a mushroom dominated tank. Im not thinking just ric's either. Most tanks I have seen are ric'n'zoo tanks but I am looking to setup more of a mushroom dominated tank.

Looking for ideas for aquascaping, number of polyps in a group, number of morphs...So I would like to see some pictures.

And I figured since you all like sharing pictures you would not mind

Anyway, moving my 65g out this weekend and once I get my December expense check, I am off to pickup the new tank.

Thanks,
Chris

Hello. I started do do the same thing a while back and I am kind of glad that I didn't. I ended up doing a mostly softie and lps tank with a couple of fish and I really like it. I have a few mushrooms and what you will find is that you can add 1 single mushroom and a month later have 5. It does not take long and the tank is overrun. That is why a lot of folks mix in Zoas and Rics. That is just my experience. But if that is what you want then I would be very selective and only put the nicest specimens in it or you will have a tank full of average looking mushrooms in a matter of a few months.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind, however it is not far off from what I am trying to achieve.

My goal is a caribbean biotope so I am naturally limited to a few species anyway just from hobby availability.

I am thinking of a few color morphs of R.florida and D.neglecta and D.theotheronethaticantremeber. Being that the Caribbean Discosoma are difficult to find, I wont mind them reproducing in my tank (food money?). Plus it is my understanding that the mushrooms I seek do not reproduce like the Pacific ones do.

I will have some polyps, gorogonia and maybe a SPS or two as I sharpen up (I guess that is how we all got started) to break up the monotony, but I want more of the nook biotope look than the formal garden look.

But I would like to see some pictures of mushrrom tanks to see if this is what I really want.

Chris

My tank is a mixture of almost everything, but I have to say that my mushrooms dominate the tank. I have lost track of how many different colonies I have, but I may be able to squeeze in a couple more. Here are some pictures.

This is my latest addition, a small colony of rics and a zoo rock with two different color morphs. I couldn't resist getting them.

jaredt:
Thanks for the resurection :)

I am still hammering out my species as I am still working in Mississippi and am not home...but I did pick my tank up a few weeks back and will start ordering some equipment whn my checks start rolling in again.

Had another question pertaining to the mushrooms, what is their natural environment. I see tanks where they are just everywhere like as in Avshocky311 but for some reason this is not how I picture them in the wild. Everyone states they like low light so are they cave dwellers? Where would the Ricordea be found as they like higher light? Grass/Sand Flats? Reeftops with the SPS?

Just more detail for my tank since I have more time.

Thanks,
Chris

Sanchez, where at in MS are you working? I live in Picayune, not far from you.. where do you normally buy your corals from?

SchweetPup, I am working in Jackson but live in Metairie (New Orleans)...hell of a commute ;). Actaully staying in a hotel off of Fortification and the interstate and will be here till the end of March. So I will be buying in the New Orleans Area, primarily Aquatic Specialties in Kenner, but will get around to checking out Rick's Reef in Metairie.

An older pic of my 90. Now it is not so mushroom dominated. More hair algae dominated at the moment.

Very nice tank avs. What kind of lights are you running?

Those are just 4 65W pcs. 2 10k and 2 actinic. Since then I have changed my lighting to 6 54W t5 and that has kind of taken a toll on the mushrooms they seemed to thin out with the extra light.

Anguswu, Stunning Tank!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must ask though, what size of tank is that, and from what i read above, you use 3 x t5 (What wattage?) and 126 Led's, how is that integrated into a fluorescent lighting system?

what sort of filtration do you use and what is your maintenance schedule like.

sorry to have so many questions but what amazing colors you have in that tank,

And same to everyone else GREAT TANKS!!!!!

I am currently tankless for about 2 years now. I had a very mixed reef before,I recently decided that i would like to do do an entirely mushroom/ric tank + some GSP and xenia. Love the softies
